It is reported in the European and American literature that salivary duct cysts constitute about 10% of all cysts of the salivary glands, although they appear to be rare in Japan. Between 1975 and 1999, only 3 (0.5%) of 586 salivary gland cysts were diagnosed as salivary duct cysts at the Division of Clinical Pathology, Iwate Medical University Hospital. Histologically, two cases appeared as a unilocular lesion lined by double- and multi-layered epithelium. The other case showed marked, intraluminar and intramural adenomatous proliferation of the epithelial lining, suggesting that the lesion w

Sialolithiasis, the formation of calculi in the major salivary glands, is the leading cause of obstructive salivary disease and occurs predominantly in the submandibular gland. Traditional management of hilar or parenchymal stones has often required submandibular gland excision, which carries the risk of visible scarring and potential facial nerve injury. Sialendoscopy has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative for both diagnosis and treatment. Since its introduction in the 1990s and subsequent refinement, it has become standard therapy in Europe and North America, but in Japan, despite n

OBJECTIVES: Sialendoscopy has become the standard treatment for sialolithiasis; however, larger submandibular calculi may require an incisional technique. This study describes and evaluates an intraoral microscopic-assisted sialolithotomy (IMAS) as a refined submandibular stone extraction technique.
METHODS: Retrospective case series of 64 submandibular IMAS procedures operated at a tertiary university center and private hospital from 2015 to 2021 were evaluated. Preoperative radiological assessment included noncontrast computed tomography scan ± magnetic resonance sialography. Stone characte

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are among the most common congenital anomalies of the neck, typically presenting as painless midline masses inferior to the hyoid bone. Distinguishing TGDCs from other cystic neck lesions, such as ranulas or dermoid cysts, can be challenging, particularly when they arise in uncommon locations such as the sublingual space. Here, we report an atypical presentation of a TGDC in the sublingual space of a 31-year-old Hispanic/Latino White male. The patient, with no significant medical history, presented to the emergency department at the University of California San

OBJECTIVES: Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDC) are rare and liable to be missed in a cursory clinical examination. This study aimed to report the details of lingual TGDC from the authors' series and review existing literature on the entity.
METHODS: A 12 year retrospective survey of all cases of thyroglossal duct anomalies managed at a tertiary teaching hospital was conducted to identify those with lingual TGDC. Their clinical presentation, investigations, diagnosis and management were analysed. Case series from anecdotal published English literature were critically reviewed with particul

OBJECTIVE: We describe the MR features of the sublingual gland in normal and diseased states.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We used MR imaging to assess age-related changes in size and signal intensity of normal sublingual glands in 60 control subjects. The MR features of sublingual glands were also studied in 70 patients with cancer, cellulitis of the sublingual space, Sjögren's syndrome, or ranula.
RESULTS: MR imaging efficiently revealed normal sublingual glands. On T1-weighted images, the MR signal intensity of the sublingual gland was lower than that of the surrounding fat but higher than that

Neck manifestations from salivary gland tissue are most commonly related to inflammation and obstruction of the glands. However, various benign and malignant processes are also seen along a continuum of clinical presentation and behavior. Preoperative diagnostics, including imaging and fine needle aspiration, are key elements in treatment planning, even in the absence of absolute histologic confirmation of tumors. Benign tumor implants in the neck can be managed with conservative surgery, whereas aggressive surgical management, including neck dissection and adjuvant therapy, is generally advoc

There are a wide variety of inflammatory, infectious, and cystic lesions which may lead patients to seek acute care for facial swelling. Computed tomography (CT) has become the mainstay for imaging in the urgent/emergent setting. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can also serve as a powerful problem solving tool in the modern era. As volume continues to increase, a wide variety of facial pathology will be encountered by the emergency radiologist. Recognition of both common and uncommon pathology will assist in diagnosis and value-based care. This article serves as an image-rich review

For patients with cerebral palsy, chronic drooling is the result of an abnormality in the cerebral control of orofacial motor functions. Sialorrhea is a troublesome problem for these patients and their attendants. Among various surgical techniques, rerouting of the Stensen's ducts and bilateral excision of the submandibular salivary glands, as described by Wilkie, gives good results. Transposition of the submandibular gland ducts in the tonsillar fossae is an easier procedure but less favorable. We present 19 patients treated by these two methods.

Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are low-flow vascular malformations of lymphatic origin that are typically diagnosed in childhood, with cervicofacial LMs posing particular risks for functional and cosmetic morbidity. Fewer than 10% of LMs present after adolescence, and adult-onset cervical cases are exceedingly rare, with only isolated reports in the literature. Adult-onset cervical LMs often mimic other cystic neck lesions, complicating diagnosis and delaying management. We report the case of a 20-year-old male who presented with a painless, slowly enlarging left upper neck mass. Ultrasound dem
