How Does Offender Rehabilitation Actually Work? Exploring Mechanisms of Change in High-Risk Treated Parolees.

Offender rehabilitation is typically thought to have been successful if a higher proportion of a sample of treatment completers avoids being reconvicted for an offence than a comparison sample. Yet, this type of evaluation design tells us little about what brings about these outcomes. In this study, we test whether change in dynamic risk factors during treatment is a recidivism-reducing mechanism in a sample of high-risk offenders. We also examine the extent to which change after treatment-in the period of reentry from prison to the community-mediates this relationship. We found that although

A Randomized Trial of Home Visitation for CPS-Involved Families: The Moderating Impact of Maternal Depression and CPS History.

Home visitation (HV) interventions may hold promise to improve parenting and prevent child maltreatment recidivism in families reported to child protective services (CPS) with young children, but this has rarely been studied. Findings are presented from an 18-month randomized controlled trial in which intact families ( N = 122) with at least one CPS report were provided with a facilitated connection to a paraprofessional evidence-based HV program or usual care services from child protection. Results are reported for changes in maternal stress, depression, and social support outcomes and repeat

The Role of Controlled Substance Use in Diversion Outcomes Among Mentally Ill Offenders: A Pilot Study.

Diversion programs offer opportunities to offenders with substance abuse or mental illness to attend treatment as an alternative to incarceration. The present study identified variables associated with drug relapse and recidivism and the moderating role of substance use on recidivism in a diversion sample. Data were collected from 80 clients with psychotic disorders from a diversion program in New York City. Outcomes were examined after 6 and 12 months of program participation. Individuals who used controlled substances other than alcohol or cannabis were more likely to have a positive toxicol

A Longitudinal Outcome Evaluation of a Prison-Based Sex Offender Treatment Program.

Sex offender outcome studies continue to produce mixed results. A common critique of these studies is their lack of methodological rigor. This study attempts to address this critique by adhering to the standards established by the Collaborative Outcome Data Committee (CODC) aimed at increasing the quality and confidence in outcome studies. We examined recidivism outcomes for a sample of formerly incarcerated sex offenders who participated in a state prison-based cognitive-behavioral-skills-based treatment program. We used propensity score analysis to compare treatment participants with a match

Motivation for treatment among women offenders in prison-based treatment and longitudinal outcomes among those who participate in community aftercare.

Participation in aftercare may reduce risk of recidivism among women offenders with substance use problems following their release to the community. This study examines motivation to participate in aftercare among women offenders and whether their participation in both in-custody and aftercare treatment reduces their risk of recidivism. Surveys were conducted with women (N = 1,158) in prison-based substance abuse treatment programs. Return-to-prison was examined among participants in community-based aftercare (N = 1,182) over 12 months following treatment discharge. Higher treatment motivation

[Long-term results of endoscopic sphincterotomy in the treatment of residual/recurrent choledocholithiasis].

Endoscopic sphincterotomy is widely accepted as the technique of choice in the treatment of residual or recidivant choledocholithiasis since the results obtained with this technique are favorable when compared to biliary surgery in most series. However, the experience of long term follow up of patients with choledocholithiasis in whom this technique would have been applied as the only treatment is still scarce up to date. We have studied 40 patients (mean age 65.6 +/- 11.1 years) with residual or recidivant choledocholithiasis who had undergone endoscopic treatment successfully before the 30th

Therapeutic and risk relevance of psychopathy and general criminal attitude change in an institutional sexual offense treatment program.

We examined the interrelationships between psychopathy, changes in general criminal attitudes, and community recidivism in a sample of 212 men who attended an institutional sexual offense treatment program (SOTP) and were followed for an average of 12.73 years post-release. The men completed a self-report measure of general criminal attitudes, the Criminal Sentiments Scale, as part of routine SOTP service delivery, Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) ratings were completed via file review, and recidivism data were obtained from official criminal records. Criminal attitude endorsement and cri

Medicaid Expansion's Spillover to the Criminal Justice System: Evidence from Six Urban Counties.

Spillovers from the Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion to other social-sector outcomes have received little attention. One that may be especially salient for public policy is the impact of expanded eligibility on jail-related outcomes. This study compares recidivism outcomes in three non-expansion counties to nearby expansion counties before and after Medicaid expansion. Using forty-eight months of arrest data from six urban county jails, we conduct comparative interrupted time series analyses to describe changes in the probability of rearrest and the number of arrests before and after Med

A Validation Study of the Child Pornography Offender Risk Tool (CPORT).

The Child Pornography Offender Risk Tool (CPORT) is a seven-item structured tool to assess the likelihood of future sexual offending over a 5-year fixed follow-up. The current study examined 5-year fixed follow-up data (15% any new sexual offense, 9% any new child pornography offense) for a validation sample of 80 men convicted of child pornography offense(s). Although statistical power was low, results were comparable with the development sample: The CPORT had slightly lower predictive accuracy for sexual recidivism for the overall group (area under the curve [AUC] = .70 vs. .74), but these v

The MATS-1 Risk Assessment Scale: Summary of Methodological Concerns and an Empirical Validation.

Recently, Wollert and colleagues proposed that sex offender recidivism estimates should be stratified by age and they developed an age-stratified scale called the MATS-1 (Multisample Age-Stratified Table of Sexual Recidivism). The purpose of this article is to highlight concerns with the development of the MATS-1 and to validate the scale using 3,510 sex offenders from 14 unique samples. Concerns with the scale's development fall into three categories: approximations leading to considerable loss of precision, absence of appropriate statistical tests, and the use of inappropriate statistical te

Convergent and Predictive Associations of Three Measures of Pedophilic Interest.

Pedophilic interest is a central risk factor for sexual offending against children. Multiple measures exist to assess pedophilic interest, and the present study aims to provide validity evidence for three of these measures in a sample of men convicted of sexual offenses. The association between a phallometric test for pedophilic interest, the Screening Scale for Pedophilic Interest (SSPI), and the sexual deviance factor of the Violence Risk Scale-Sexual Offense (VRS-SO) version was examined in a sample of 261 men who participated in sexual violence reduction services. The association between t

Improving the livelihoods of justice-involved youth: Study protocol for a replication and extension of Functional Family Therapy-Gangs.

BACKGROUND: This study will evaluate Functional Family Therapy-Gangs (FFT-G), an extension of a family-based therapeutic intervention-Functional Family Therapy (FFT)-designed to help troubled youth exhibiting mild to severe behavior problems overcome delinquency, substance abuse, and violence. FFT-G, however, addresses risk factors that are typically more salient among gang than delinquent populations. A randomized control trial with adjudicated youth in Philadelphia revealed reductions in recidivism over an 18-month period. The purposes of this paper are to outline the protocol for replicatin

Effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing with Justice-involved People: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Objective: Motivational interviewing (MI) is increasingly recognized as an effective approach in forensic settings, particularly for overcoming resistance by avoiding confrontation and fostering intrinsic motivation. Research shows that interventions incorporating MI are more effective than other approaches in preventing and reducing offending behavior, highlighting its importance in improving intervention outcomes. Given this evidence, advocating for the integration of MI is crucial to enhance the effectiveness of interventions. Method: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to system

[Histological diagnosis of gynecologic recurrences in the minor pelvis. Puncture using the tru-cut biopsy needle].

In about 60 cases demonstrating a tentative diagnosis of a palpable recidivation (cancer of the cervix), a puncture of the parametrium and of the pelvic wall was carried out with the biopsy needle "Tru-Cut". The modalities of procedure are described. Verification of cancer suspicion was achieved to a rate of 50 per cent, this percentage having increased for about 20% when the puncture was repeated. Ten per cent of the carcinomas could not be listed, and in 20% of the cases a recidivation could be excluded. There were no complications.

[Relation between the extent of resection of cutaneous melanomas and the incidence of local recurrence].

Under study was the influence of the volume of a dissected primary tumor, the method of plasty of the wound defect and anesthesia upon the incidence of local recidivations of cutaneous melanoma in 1334 patients. Free skin plasty was shown to be necessary in cases of the surgical treatment of cutaneous melanoma excepting localization of the primary tumor on the trunk. Parsimonious excision of the primary tumor and local infiltration anesthesia during operation are thought to be the factors responsible for the development of local recidivation of skin melanomas.

Pharmacology of sexually compulsive behavior.

In a meta-analysis on controlled outcomes evaluations of 22,000 sex offenders, Losel and Schmucker found 80 comparisons between treatment and control groups. The recidivism rate averaged 19% in treated groups, and 27% in controls. Most other reviews reported a lower rate of sexual recidivism in treated sexual offenders. Of 2039 citations in this study (including literature in five languages), 60 studies held independent comparisons. Problematic issues included the control groups; various hormonal, surgical, cognitive behavioral, and psychotherapeutic treatments; and sample sizes. In the 80 stu

From childhood abuse and lack of social support to intimate partner violence: The mediating role of impulsivity and attentional functioning.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment and limited social support are established risk factors for intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW), yet the self-regulatory mechanisms linking them to perpetration remain unclear. We tested whether impulsivity and sustained attention mediate the associations between childhood abuse, perceived social support, and IPVAW perpetration and recidivism. METHODS: 211 convicted male perpetrators (M = 40.7 years) completed validated self-report and performance measures: Revised Conflict Tactics Scales-Parent-Child (childhood physical/psychological abuse), Fun
