Ectopic adrenal cortical rest in the fallopian tube - a rare incidental finding.

Ectopic adrenal tissue (EAT) is a rare developmental anomaly most frequently observed along the genitourinary tract, usually in pediatric males. Its persistence into adulthood, particularly within the fallopian tube, is exceedingly uncommon. We present the case of a 43-year--old woman who underwent total laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy for symptomatic uterine leiomyomas. Histopathologic examination incidentally revealed a well-circumscribed nodule in the right fallopian tube composed of polygonal cells with clear cytoplasm, morphologically resembling adrenal cortical tiss

WAVE2 and REST/NRSF Regulate Clustered Gene Expression by Maintaining Heterochromatin Organization.

The actin polymerization machinery, comprising the ARP2/3 complex and its activators, the WASP family proteins, has been implicated in regulating a broad spectrum of nuclear processes, such as transcriptional regulation and nuclear organization. Here, using clustered protocadherin (cPcdh) and β-globin genes as model systems, we showed that WAVE2, a member of the WASP family, regulates chromatin organization by maintaining heterochromatin dynamics. Specifically, by CRISPR DNA-fragment editing, in conjunction with integrated analyses of ChIP-seq, MeDIP-seq, ATAC-seq, QHR-4C, and RNA-seq, we show

Motor and default mode network states of rest in frontal lobe epilepsy.

Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), marked by recurrent seizures arising from the frontal lobes, can significantly impair cognitive and motor function, reducing quality of life. Recent studies suggest that epilepsies can involve functional networks throughout the brain that can be identified using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In this study, we aimed to determine whether FLE is associated with a distinct functional network brain states. Using dynamic functional connectivity analysis in combination with k-means clustering, we investigated dynamic connectivity patterns of

Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) in methamphetamine use disorder: a pilot study.

Existing treatments for methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) are suboptimal in addressing withdrawal and preventing relapse. Models of addiction have proposed that negative affect plays an influential role in drug craving and relapse. Although Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) has been associated with attenuated negative affect in other psychiatric conditions, it has not been examined as an intervention for MUD. To address this gap, the present study investigated the feasibility, tolerability, and safety of a single session of REST via floatation pool (pool-REST) in treatment-enro

Hyperventilation during rest and exercise in orthostatic intolerance and Spiky-Leaky Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic intolerance, with or without postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), is collectively referred to as orthostatic intolerance dysautonomia syndromes (OIDS). This condition often presents with daytime hyperventilation, which is considered to be secondary to sympathetic hyperactivity. This hyperventilation appears to be a key characteristic in a newly described subset of patients with OIDS who also exhibit craniocervical instability, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), and the phenomenon of alternating intracranial hyperten

Intercostal muscle oxygenation and expiratory loaded breathing at rest: Respiratory pattern effect.

In patients with airway obstruction, an increase in breathing frequency at rest is commonly associated with a dynamic hyperinflation (DH). In such a situation, intercostal muscle oxygenation may be disturbed. This hypothesis was examined in a context of simulated airway obstruction in healthy subjects. After a control period of 5 min, twelve participants (20 ± 2 years) breathed at rest through a 20-cmH2O expiratory threshold load, either by increasing or reducing their respiratory rate (ETLF+ or ETLF). Tissue saturation index (TSI) and concentration changes in oxyhaemoglobin (oxy[Hb+Mb]) were

Pathogenic REST variant causing Jones syndrome and a review of the literature.

Jones syndrome is a rare dominantly inherited syndrome characterized by gingival fibromatosis and progressive sensorineural hearing loss becoming symptomatic in the second decade of life. Here, we report a father and his two daughters presenting with a typical Jones syndrome (OMIM %135550) phenotype. Exome sequencing identified a repressor element 1-silencing transcription factor (REST, OMIM *600571) (NM_005612.5) c.2670_2673del p.(Glu891Profs*6) heterozygous variant segregating with Jones syndrome in the family. We review the clinical data from all previously published patients with Jones syn

High-power gamma-related delta phase alteration in schizophrenia patients at rest.

AIM: Information processing is supported by the cortico-cortical transmission of neural oscillations across brain regions. Recent studies have demonstrated that the rhythmic firing of neural populations is not random but is governed by interactions with other frequency bands. Specifically, the amplitude of gamma-band oscillations is associated with the phase of lower frequency oscillations in support of short and long-range communications among networks. This cross-frequency relation is thought to reflect the temporal coordination of neural communication. While schizophrenia patients show abno

Rest/Stress Intradermal Lymphoscintigraphy for the Functional Imaging of the Lymphatic System.

PURPOSE: Lymphoscintigraphy is the criterion-standard method for diagnosing lymphedema, and there is no universally standardized imaging modality. In our center, we use a new approach: rest/stress intradermal lymphoscintigraphy. METHODS: We tested 231 consecutive patients with suspected lymphedema. All patients were studied after a complex physical therapy program to reduce edema. Two doses of 99m Tc-nanocolloid were injected intradermally. Two static planar scans were taken at rest following tracer injection. Next, patients performed an isotonic muscular exercise for 2 minutes followed by po

Frontolimbic alpha activity tracks intentional rest BCI control improvement through mindfulness meditation.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are capable of translating human intentions into signals controlling an external device to assist patients with severe neuromuscular disorders. Prior work has demonstrated that participants with mindfulness meditation experience evince improved BCI performance, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we conducted a large-scale longitudinal intervention study by training participants in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR; a standardized mind-body awareness training intervention), and investigated whether and how short-term MBSR affected

Insufficient Rest Breaks at Workplace and Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Korean Kitchen Workers.

BACKGROUND: The socioeconomic burden of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) is significant, and kitchen work is a high-risk occupation for MSDs due to the intensive manual workload and repetitive movements that are involved. However, there are very few studies on MSDs and rest breaks as a workplace intervention among kitchen workers. This study examined the relationship between insufficient rest breaks and increased MSD risk among Korean kitchen workers. METHODS: Sociodemographic and occupational factors of 1,909 kitchen workers were collected from the 3rd-4th Korean Working Conditions Survey da

Overcoming Rest-Task Divide-Abnormal Temporospatial Dynamics and Its Cognition in Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder exhibiting alterations in spontaneous and task-related cerebral activity whose relation (termed "state dependence") remains unclear. For unraveling their relationship, we review recent electroencephalographic (and a few functional magnetic resonance imaging) studies in schizophrenia that assess and compare both rest/prestimulus and task states, ie, rest/prestimulus-task modulation. Results report reduced neural differentiation of task-related activity from rest/prestimulus activity across different regions, neural measures, cognitive domains, and

Possible effects of short rest after lunch on hemodynamics in the afternoon.

PURPOSE: Drowsiness is often experienced in the afternoon after lunch. Decreases in blood flow to the brain secondary to increases in blood flow to the digestive organs after food intake could represent an underlying cause. As various beneficial effects of short rests on mental activities have been reported, the present study investigated hemodynamics using Doppler sonography of the common carotid artery (CCA) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) after lunch, comparing resting and non-resting cases. METHODS: Subjects comprised 24 healthy young adults (10 men, 14 women; mean age 22 ± 1 years).

HYPNOTIC AUTOMATICITY IN THE BRAIN AT REST: An Arterial Spin Labelling Study.

The feeling of automaticity reported by individuals undergoing a hypnotic procedure is an essential dimension of hypnosis phenomenology. In the present study, healthy participants rated their subjective experience of automaticity and resting-state arterial spin labelling (ASL) scans were acquired before and after a standard hypnotic induction (i.e., "neutral hypnosis"). The increase in perceived automaticity was positively associated with activity in the parietal operculum (PO) and seed-based coactivation analysis revealed additional associations in the anterior part of the supracallosal cingu

Increased cerebellar-default-mode network connectivity at rest in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Abnormalities of the cerebellum and default-mode network (DMN) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been widely reported. However, alterations of reciprocal functional connections between the cerebellum and DMN at rest in OCD remain unclear. Forty patients with OCD and 38 gender-, age-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. Seed-based functional connectivity (FC) and support vector machine (SVM) were applied to analyze the imaging data. Compared with HCs, patients with OCD exhibited increased FCs be
