Brain stem reticular units: some properties of the course and origin of the ascending trajectory.

Experiments were conducted in acutely prepared cats anesthetized with halothane-nitrous oxide. Single units were recorded in the mesencephalic and rostral rhombencephalic reticular core, and their ascending axons were stimulated in the mesencephalon, diencephalon, and telencephalon. The locations of stimulation and recording sites were determined by histological examination of the brains. Antidromic spikes were elicited by electrodes with a stimulus spread of approximately 300 mum and were collided with spontaneous (orthodromic) spikes to confirm antidromicity. Projecting axons were found to b

Blockade of the reticulospinal inhibitory pathway by anaesthetic agents.

1. Adult cats were decerebrated at the intercollicular level. The effect of the anaesthetic agents, pentobarbitone, paraldehyde, tribromethanol, chloralose and procaine on the reticulospinal inhibitory pathway, which produced inhibition of segmental reflex potentials, was analysed.2. The doses which blocked this inhibitory pathway did not exceed the doses required to produce surgical level anaesthesia with any of the drugs.3. After the reticular inhibition of the reflex potentials was abolished, the reflex potentials were augmented by reticular stimulation with a higher intensity. This was tho

Comparison of the effect of althesin with diazepam and thiopental sodium on cortical and subcortical epileptic activity in the rat.

Althesin antiparoxysmal effect was comparatively studied with diazepam and thiopental sodium on penicillin induced cortical epileptic focus and on mesencephalic reticular unitary activity triggered by cortical spikes. Althesin was shown to abolish both cortical and subcortical epileptic activity, while diazepam was able to suppress the paroxysmal unitary activity evoked from the cortical spikes at the level of the reticular mesencephalic formation, but was ineffective on focal paroxysm. Thiopental sodium exhibited behaviour similar to Althesin, but its action was weak and short lasting at both

Ischaemic pontomedullary transection with incomplete locked-in syndrome. A case report with MRI.

We describe a case of incomplete locked-in syndrome (LIS) due to basilar artery thrombosis, in which MRI showed a complete, sharply demarcated infarct at the pontomedullary junction. This supports experimental data showing that the lower reticular formation is not critical for the maintenance of consciousness. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of ischaemic pontomedullary transection with LIS.

Prominent somnolence and cerebellar syndrome in subclavian artery thrombosis--a case report.

A patient suffering from acute left subclavian artery thrombosis presented with an unusual syndrome of prominent somnolence, right cerebellar signs, and left upper extremity ischemia. Clinical, angiologic, and electrophysiologic studies confirmed a brain stem and reticular formation dysfunction due to vertebrobasilar ischemia. Urgent thromboembolectomy led to neurologic improvement and satisfactory revascularization of the involved upper limb.

The heterogeneity of dermal mesenchymal cells reproduced in skin equivalents regulates barrier function and elasticity.

The heterogeneity of dermal mesenchymal cells, including perivascular mesenchymal cells and papillary and reticular fibroblasts, plays critical roles in skin homeostasis. Herein, we present human skin equivalents (HSEs), in which pericytes, papillary fibroblasts, and reticular fibroblasts are spatially organized through autonomous three-cell interactions among epidermal keratinocytes, dermal fibroblasts, and vascular endothelial cells. The replication of dermal mesenchymal cell heterogeneity enhances skin functions, including epithelialization, epidermal barrier formation, and dermal elasticit

Assessing blink reflex circuits by three different afferent routes in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Degeneration of nuclei of the brainstem, especially parts of the vagal nuclei complex and the reticular formation, in Parkinson's disease (PD) may in part be responsible for nonmotor signs like obstipation, cardiac dysfunction and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD). The aim of the study was to establish a new blink reflex (BR) variant involving the vagal nuclei complex and the reticular formation and to investigate BR comprehensively using 3 different afferent routes in PD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional observational study in 30 PD patients and 30 age and sex match

[Physiological and neuropharmacological aspects of the central respiratory mechanisms].

The present physiological and neuropharmacological views and the essentials of the experimental results on the anatomical localization, functional and neuronal organization of the central respiratory mechanisms, classically expressed as the respiratory centers, in the brain stem were reviewed and discussed. The brain stem neural mechanism for central regulation of breathing is regarded as a complex neuronal mechanism consisting of several functional subsystems subserving different functions. One of its functions is the generation of respiratory rhythm. The subsystem for respiratory rhythm-gene

Fibroblasts hold the key to TLS formation.

The presence of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) associates with improved anti-tumor immunity, and as such, understanding why some tumors develop TLSs is of prime interest. In the current issue of Cancer Cell, Kirschstein et al. demonstrate that TGFβ-driven programming of myofibroblastic cancer-associated fibroblasts blocks reticular fibroblast differentiation and TLS formation in pancreatic cancer, a barrier reversible by TGFβR1 inhibition.

Altered functional connectivity of brainstem nuclei in new daily persistent headache: Evidence from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVES: The new daily persistent headache (NDPH) is a rare primary headache disorder. However, the underlying mechanisms of NDPH remain incompletely understood. This study aims to apply seed-based analysis to explore the functional connectivity (FC) of brainstem nuclei in patients with NDPH using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: The FC analysis from the region of interest (ROI) to whole brain voxels was used to investigate 29 patients with NDPH and 37 well-matched healthy controls (HCs) with 3.0 Tesla MRI. The 76 nuclei in the brainstem atlas were define

Mapping the oculomotor system.

Over the last three decades and together with Bernard Cohen, Volker Henn, Ulrich Büttner, and Anja Horn, it has been possible to morphologically identify several functional cell groups in the oculomotor system: the medium-sized horizontal excitatory and inhibitory burst neurons (EBNs, IBNs) in the paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF), the more sparsely scattered vertical EBNs in the rostral interstitial nucleus of the MLF (RIMLF), and the typically elongated omnipause neurons (OPNs) in nucleus raphé interpositus--all essential for the generation of saccades. In contrast, the role of t

Biochemical and autoradiographic measurements of brain serotonin synthesis rate in the freely moving rat: a reexamination of the alpha-methyl-L-tryptophan method.

Biochemical approaches were used in freely moving rats to determine, under steady-state conditions, the brain/arterial plasma partition coefficients of L-tryptophan and alpha-[3H]methyl-L-tryptophan, from which the lumped constant for the alpha-methyl-L-tryptophan method of estimating the rate of brain serotonin synthesis is calculated. The lumped constants were significantly different in the various structures examined: 0.149 +/- 0.003 in the raphe dorsalis, 0.103 +/- 0.002 in the raphe centralis, 0.087 +/- 0.003 in the reticular formation, and 0.62 +/- 0.08 in the pineal gland. Ultrastructural changes of tracheal epithelial cells of chicks experimentally infected with Cryptosporidium sp.

The ultrastructural changes in the tracheal epithelial cells of chicks with experimental cryptosporidiosis were examined. There was deciliation and formation of compound cilia whereas the microvilli showed Y-shaped formation, atrophy or blunting, fusion and branching. The basal bodies and striated rootlets were irregular and sometimes wanting while there was an increase in centrioles beneath the cilia. Nuclear atypia was common whereas the nucleoli were hypertrophic with reticular nucleolonema. Double nucleoli were mostly reticular and rarely ring-shaped or of thin-shelled type. There was an i

The C1 area of the rostral ventrolateral medulla oblongata. A critical brainstem region for control of resting and reflex integration of arterial pressure.

A population of neurons localized to a small region of the brain stem reticular formation, the rostral ventrolateral reticular nucleus (RVL), is the principal area of the brainstem regulating resting, reflex, and probably behaviorally coupled control of arterial pressure. The critical area of the RVL reticular nucleus engaged in cardiovascular control surrounds a cluster of adrenergic neurons of the C1 group, and is therefore designated the C1 area. C1 area neurons have a direct and extremely potent synaptic relationship with preganglionic sympathetic neurons of the intermediolateral (IML) nuc

Revisiting a Telencephalic Extent of the Ascending Reticular Activating System.

Is the cerebrum involved in its own activation to states of attention or arousal? "Telencephalon" is a term borrowed from embryology to identify not only the cerebral hemispheres of the forebrain, but also the basal forebrain. We review a generally undercited literature that describes nucleus basalis of Meynert, located within the substantia innominata of the ventrobasal forebrain, as a telencephalic extension of the ascending reticular activating formation. Although that formation's precise anatomical definition and localization have proven elusive over more than 70 years, a careful reading o

Functional neuroanatomy of the human pre-Bötzinger complex with particular reference to sudden unexplained perinatal and infant death.

The authors are the first to identify in man the pre-Bötzinger complex, a structure of the brainstem critical for respiratory rhythmogenesis, previously investigated only in rats. The evaluation of the neurokinin 1 receptors and somatostatin immunoreactivity in a total of 63 brains from 25 fetuses, nine newborns and 29 infants, allowed to delineate the anatomic structure and the boundaries of this human neural center in a restricted area of the ventrolateral medulla at the obex level, ventral to the semicompact ambiguus nucleus. The neurons of the pre-Bötzinger complex were roundish in fetuses

Emetic responses and neural activity in young musk shrews during the breast-feeding/weaning period: comparison between the high and low emetic response strains using a shaking stimulus.

The high emetic response (HER) strain and low emetic response (LER) strain of musk shrews (Suncus murinus) markedly differ in the emetic reflex in adults. However, there have been no studies on young musk shrews. We gave a shaking stimulus to young musk shrews aged 10 days or more that were obtained by mating within each strain and observed emetic responses. In the HER strain, no animal aged 10 days vomited, but vomiting was observed in 1 of 5 animals each aged 12 and 14 days, 2 of 5 animals aged 16 days, and all animals aged 18 days or more. In the LER strain, no vomiting was observed until t

Effect of opioid receptors of the cuneiform nucleus on cardiovascular responses in normotensive and hypotensive hemorrhagic rats.

The presence of opioid receptors in the cuneiform nucleus (CnF), which is a mesencephalic area, and their involvement in the central cardiovascular responses have been shown. Therefore, this study is designed to examine the possible role of mu- (μ) and delta- (δ) opioid receptors in the CnF in the cardiovascular responses in normotensive and hemorrhagic hypotensive rats. Following anesthesia and the recording of the blood pressure, the agonist and antagonist of μ- (morphine and naloxone) and δ- (D-Pen 2, 5]-Enkephalin hydrate (DPDPE) and naltridole) receptors were microinjected into the CnF.
