Ten pregnant ewes were alternated in a study of the blocking effect of parenteral magnesium on the catecholamine response to cocaine. Indirect blood pressures were recorded at 1-minute intervals for 12 minutes before and after a bolus of 2 mg/kg of cocaine. Fetal heart rates were continuously recorded from skin electrodes. The paper described modified hemoglobin (Hb) with glycolaldehyde for the efficacy on resuscitation of severe hemorrhagic shock. Our objective was to compare the effect on resuscitation of severe hemorrhagic shock with different experimental groups. Results showed early resuscitation with modified bovine Hb is superior to lactated Ringer's solution group in improving hemodynamic and acidosis, but the effect of polymerized Hb with glycolaldehyde were similar to fresh whole blood in this rat model.

This report describes the management of a poor risk Nepalese patient (active pulmonary tuberculosis, haemoglobin concentration 4.6 g dl-1, weight 28.5 kg) requiring emergency Caesarean section for fetal distress. Subarachnoid blockade (0.5% bupivacaine plain 3.5 ml) was satisfactory; blood loss was around 400 ml and was replaced with Haemaccel and lactated Ringer's solution (blood was not available). Although unresponsive at birth, the child had an Apgar score of 10 at 15 min.
