OBJECTIVES AND BACKGROUND: Povidone-iodine [polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine complex (PVP-iodine)] might constitute a valuable adjunct to current periodontal therapy because of its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, low potential for developing resistance and adverse reactions, wide availability, ease of use, and low financial cost. BACKGROUND: Scaling and root planing is the basic treatment modality for periodontal disease. Mechanical treatment is limited by physical impediments and biochemical considerations. Antimicrobial agents may be used as an adjunct to overcome limitations of mechanical therapy.

The current data suggest that local delivery of antimicrobials into the periodontal pocket can improve periodontal health. However, they do not provide a superior result to scaling and root planing.
