Irrigant flow characteristics in the root canal with internal root resorption: a computational fluid dynamics evaluation.

Irrigation dynamics of syringe irrigation with different needle designs (side-vented, double side-vented, notched) and ultrasonic irrigation in the root canal with internal root resorption were evaluated using a computational fluid dynamics model. A micro-CT scanned mandibular premolar was used for modeling internal root resorption. The needles and the ultrasonic tip were positioned at 2, 4, and 5 mm from the working length. The insertion depth and the irrigation model were found influential on the shear stress and the irrigant extension. The extension of the irrigant increased toward 2-5 mm f

Radiographic Diagnosis of Simulated External Root Resorption in Multi-Rooted Teeth: The Influence of Spatial Resolution.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of spatial resolution (line pairs per millimetre - lp/mm) on the diagnosis of simulated external root resorption (ERR) in multi-rooted teeth by using digital periapical radiography. Forty human mandibular molars (80 roots) were used. The roots were divided into the following groups (n = 10): control without root filling (WORF), control with root filling (WRF), small ERRWORF, small ERR-WRF, moderate ERR-WORF, moderate ERR-WRF, extensive ERR-WORF and extensive ERR-WRF. Four digital radiographs (phosphor storage plates - PSP system) were taken o

Can Panoramic Radiography Reliably Detect Root Resorption From Impacted Maxillary Canines?

Background and objective Panoramic radiography (PR) remains widely used for the initial assessment of impacted maxillary canines; however, its diagnostic accuracy for detecting associated root resorption has not been well quantified across different observer categories. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of PR for detecting root resorption associated with impacted maxillary canines, using cone beam CT (CBCT) as the reference standard. Materials and methods A total of 51 patients (71 impacted canine sites) with paired panoramic radiographs and CBCT images were retrospectively

Hybrid Approach to Manage Inflammatory Internal Root Resorption: A Case Report.

Internal inflammatory root resorption (IRR) poses significant challenges in endodontic treatment due to its potential to compromise tooth integrity. This case report describes the conservative management of IRR in a 40-year-old woman with a radiolucent lesion in the midroot of a maxillary central incisor. Early diagnosis using cone-beam computed tomography prevented perforation and guided treatment planning. Non-surgical endodontic treatment was performed using a dental operating microscope, ultrasonic irrigation, and a hybrid obturation technique. The apical portion of the canal was sealed wi

Signaling Pathways in Root Resorption: Linking Inflammation, Odontoclastogenesis, and Tissue Remodeling.

INTRODUCTION: Root resorption is a pathologic process characterized by the breakdown of dentin and cementum by odontoclasts, mirroring the mechanisms of osteoclast-driven bone resorption. Osteoclastogenesis is tightly regulated by the RANK/RANKL/OPG axis and other signaling pathways, including Wnt, ATP-P2RX7-IL-1, programmed cell death, and inflammasome activation. OBJECTIVE: This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the key signaling pathways and molecular mediators orchestrating root resorption in orthodontic, traumatic, and inflammatory conditions. METHODS: A literature-based analy

[Effect of corticotomy techniques accelerating orthodontic tooth movement on root resorption].

In recent years, developing new methods to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) has attracted extensive attention in the field of orthodontic clinical and scientific research. It reduces orthodontic treatment time and risks. Over the past, various approaches have been done to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. Several forms of corticotomy techniques have been effective in inducing rapid tooth movement. These techniques activate regional acceleratory phenomenon and create a favorable microenvironment for accelerating tooth movement. Root resorption is one of most common side effects

Enhancement of orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in ovariectomized mice.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: As the number of patients with osteoporosis requiring orthodontic treatment is increasing with the aging of society, it is necessary to evaluate the relations between bone metabolism in old age and orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). However, the effects of changes in bone metabolism due to osteoporosis on OTM and root resorption are still unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of OTM and root resorption in a mouse ovariectomy (OVX)-induced osteoporosis model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight-week-old female wild-type mice underwent OVX or sham surgery (Sham) as control

Baicalin inhibits root resorption during tooth movement in a rodent model.

OBJECTIVE: Baicalin mediates bone metabolism and has shown protective activity against periodontal tissue damage in a rat model of periodontitis. Therefore, we hypothesized that baicalin may inhibit the root resorption that occurs during orthodontic tooth movement and examined its effect on the histological changes in periodontal tissue that occur during tooth movement. METHODS: First molars of rats were subjected to traction using excessive orthodontic force to produce a root resorption model. Rats in the baicalin group received baicalin for 3 weeks during tooth movement, and the amount of f

Estrogen effects on orthodontic tooth movement and orthodontically-induced root resorption.

Estrogen is an essential regulator of the bone tissue. The remodeling of the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament is the basis of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). There is a negative coregulation between physiological estrogen levels and the rate of OTM. As a possible inhibitory factor of OTM, estrogen suppresses bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclastic differentiation and restraining osteoclast lifespan though multiple pathways and cytokines, leading to the suppression of the initiation step of bone remodeling. On the other hand, estrogen stimulates osteoblastic differentiation and funct

External apical root resorption in orthodontic patients: molecular and genetic basis.

External apical root resorption is one of the most deleterious complications after orthodontic treatment. Studies to explain the causal relationship between orthodontic tooth movement and external apical root resorption have been inconclusive till date. Individual variations in external apical root resorption sometimes overshadow the treatment related factors which indicate genetic predisposition and/or multifactorial etiology. Mechanism of root resorption is not completely understood. Inflammatory root resorption induced by orthodontic treatment is a part of process of elimination of hyaline

Regenerative Endodontics: A Potential Solution for External Root Resorption (Case Series).

INTRODUCTION: Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) are aimed to treat apical periodontitis and promote root maturation of immature necrotic teeth. However, REPs are not intended to be a primary indication for treating or arresting external root resorption (ERR). The purpose of this study was to describe REP treatment in the cessation of ERR. METHODS: Four cases (5 teeth) of posttraumatic immature teeth diagnosed with necrotic pulp and apical periodontitis or chronic apical abscess were treated with REPs using plasma-rich fibrin as a scaffold. All the teeth showed ERR and have been follow
