Anti-Methanogenic Effect of Phytochemicals on Methyl-Coenzyme M Reductase-Potential: In Silico and Molecular Docking Studies for Environmental Protection.

Methane is a greenhouse gas which poses a great threat to life on earth as its emissions directly contribute to global warming and methane has a 28-fold higher warming potential over that of carbon dioxide. Ruminants have been identified as a major source of methane emission as a result of methanogenesis by their respective gut microbiomes. Various plants produce highly bioactive compounds which can be investigated to find a potential inhibitor of methyl-coenzyme M reductase (the target protein for methanogenesis). To speed up the process and to limit the use of laboratory resources, the prese

Cell death and biomass reduction in biofilms of multidrug resistant extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolates by 1,8-cineole.

Escherichia coli is the most frequent agent of urinary tract infections in humans. The emergence of uropathogenic multidrug-resistant (MDR) E. coli strains that produce extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) has created additional problems in providing adequate treatment of urinary tract infections. We have previously reported the antimicrobial activity of 1,8-cineole, one of the main components of Rosmarinus officinalis volatile oil, against Gram negative bacteria during planktonic growth. Here, we evaluated the antibiofilm activity of 1,8-cineole against pre-formed mature biofilms of MDR ESBL

Therapeutic potential of medicinal plants for the management of scabies.

Sarcoptes scabiei (S. scabiei), a parasite mite which causes scabies disease resulting in serious public health concern. The long-term scabies disease can lead to complications such as septicemia, acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, heart disease, and secondary infections. Timely treatment to the affected patients is required to control the disease and get rid of the causative agent. Delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatment can lead to serious consequences. The most common treatment strategy is the use of allopathic medicines which can immediately relieve the patient but have the

Optimisation of indole acetic acid production by Neopestalotiopsis aotearoa endophyte isolated from Thymus vulgaris and its impact on seed germination of Ocimum basilicum.

BACKGROUND: Microbial growth during plant tissue culture is a common problem that causes significant losses in the plant micro-propagation system. Most of these endophytic microbes have the ability to propagate through horizontal and vertical transmission. On the one hand, these microbes provide a rich source of several beneficial metabolites. RESULTS: The present study reports on the isolation of fungal species from different in vitro medicinal plants (i.e., Breynia disticha major, Breynia disticha, Duranta plumieri, Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Ocimum bas

Rosmarinic acid and ursolic acid alleviate deficits in cognition, synaptic regulation and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in an Aβ1-42-induced mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as rosemary, is a medicinal herb that presents significant biological properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-depressant activities. Recent findings correlate impaired adult neurogenesis, which is crucial for the maintenance of synaptic plasticity and hippocampal functioning, synaptic regulation with the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). These observations call for the need to developing compounds that promote neurogenesis and alleviates deficits in cognition and synaptic regul

Recent advances in understanding NRF2 as a druggable target: development of pro-electrophilic and non-covalent NRF2 activators to overcome systemic side effects of electrophilic drugs like dimethyl fumarate.

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an electrophilic compound previously called BG-12 and marketed under the name Tecfidera ®. It was approved in 2013 by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis. One mechanism of action of DMF is stimulation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) transcriptional pathway that induces anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory phase II enzymes to prevent chronic neurodegeneration. However, electrophiles such as DMF also produce severe systemic side effects, in part due to non-specif

Antimycobacterial activity of selected medicinal plants traditionally used in Sudan to treat infectious diseases.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The emergence of multidrug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis underscores the need for continuous development of new and efficient methods to determine the susceptibility of isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the search for novel antimycobacterial agents. Natural products constitute an important source of new drugs, and design and implementation of antimycobacterial susceptibility testing methods are necessary to evaluate the different extracts and compounds. In this study we have explored the antimycobacterial properties of 50 ethanolic extr

Two recent but temporally distinct outbreaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis among foreign workers in the Dead-Sea area of Jordan.

Two temporally distinct outbreaks of human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), as well as scattered cases of the disease, have recently been observed close to the Dead Sea, in Jordan. Each of the two outbreaks, which occurred in 2004/2005 and 2007/2008, involved a group of foreign workers who were deployed within otherwise uninhabited locations. During each outbreak, about 20% of the workers were found infected with the causative parasite. In the earlier outbreak, 61 workers were found to have skin lesions like those of CL and all but three were confirmed by culture and/or the examination of smears

Carnosic acid in topical rosemary extract enhances skin repair via TRPA1 activation.

Mammalian skin wounds typically heal with a scar, characterized by fibrotic tissue that disrupts original tissue architecture and function. Therapies that limit fibrosis and promote regenerative healing remain a major unmet clinical need. Rosemary extract, particularly in the form of topical oils and creams, has gained widespread public attention for its purported wound-healing properties. However, its efficacy and mechanism of action remain poorly understood. We show in adult wound healing mouse models that an ethanol-based rosemary extract accelerates the speed of wound healing and mitigates

Potentials and challenges of an integrative medicine protocol in intensive care: the perspective of intensive care nurses.

BACKGROUND: Patients admitted to intensive care (IC) settings are exposed to a set of inevitable environmental stressors, such as high noise levels, inadequate lighting conditions, long-term immobilization, and prolonged administration of psychopharmaceuticals, the combination of which is known to be associated with clinical challenges, including poor sleep quality, dysregulation of circadian rhythms, agitation, anxiety, disorientation, or delirium. Due to the great complexity of the IC setting, these conditions are difficult to address with conventional means. The goal of the current study wa

Volatile compounds of volatile oils and hydrosols: intra-specific comparison in seven Lamiaceae species.

Aromatic plants of the Lamiaceae family are widely recognized as major natural sources of volatile oils (VOs), with broad applications in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food systems. In contrast, hydrosols (HYDs)-the aqueous co-products of hydrodistillation-have received comparatively less attention, despite growing industrial relevance and the potential to provide distinct, water-compatible aromatic signatures. In the present work, the volatile signatures of VOs and taxon-matched HYDs from seven Lamiaceae species (Lavandula × intermedia, Melissa officinalis, Mentha × piperita, Origanum onites,
