Reallocating time spent in sleep, sedentary behavior and physical activity and its association with pain: a pilot sleep study from the Osteoarthritis Initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Being physically active has broad health benefits for people with osteoarthritis (OA), including pain relief. Increasing physical activity (PA) requires reducing time in other behaviors within a fixed 24-h day. We examined the potential benefits in relation to pain from trading time in one type of wake or sleep behavior for another. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, we used isotemporal logistic regression models to examine the estimated effect on pain from replacing time in one behavior with equal time in another, controlling for sociodemographic and health factors. Stratified

A Systematic Review of Community-based Interventions to Promote Physical Activity or Reduce Sedentary Behavior among Adults in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Community-based interventions (CBIs) are widely used to address behavioral risk factors for non-communicable diseases, yet evidence of their effectiveness in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains limited. This study systematically reviewed evidence on the effectiveness of CBIs promoting physical activity (PA) and/or reducing sedentary behavior (SB) among community-dwelling adults in LMICs. We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library (2000-2024) for CBIs in LMICs. Primary outcomes were changes in PA and/or SB. Descriptive and graphical depictions w

Associations of sedentary behavior and physical activity with serum uric acid in middle-aged and older adults with and without chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Elevated serum uric acid (UA) level is a major health risk, and its accumulation is exacerbated by impaired renal function. Physical activity is a modifiable determinant of serum UA levels. This study used an isotemporal substitution model to examine the associations of reallocating time between activity behaviors with serum UA levels in middle-aged and older adults with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS: A total of 294 middle-aged and older adults with and without CKD (45-85 years) were recruited. Sedentary behavior (SB), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), a

Repeated device-based measures of daily movement, sedentary behavior, and sleep at 6 months postpartum: the Pregnancy Environment and Lifestyle Study-2 cohort.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Appropriate duration and high-quality sleep is essential for overall well-being and may be improved through engaging in daytime physical activity (PA). Yet the postpartum period is a particularly challenging time for these health behaviors, and sleep in this population has received little attention in scientific literature. This study examined the associations of daily PA and sedentary behavior (SED) with postpartum sleep measures, both obtained from wrist-worn ActiGraph devices. METHODS: Data come from the Pregnancy Environment and Lifestyle Study-2 cohort, a racially and e

Genetic Evidence for Causal Effects of Domain-Specific Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior on Osteoporosis and Inflammatory Arthritis: A Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic factors contribute to physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB), two complex behavioral traits. They may be associated with musculoskeletal and inflammatory diseases. However, the relationships of domain-specific PA and SB traits with osteoporosis (OS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remain unclear. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis assessed potential bidirectional associations between these behavioral traits and the three diseases. METHODS: GWAS summary statistics were used to examine five domain-specific PA traits, three

Measurement tools for sedentary behavior in the Arabic-speaking countries in MENA region: a systematic review of validated instruments from the BRIDGE project.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior is an independent risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Screen time represents a specific domain of sedentary behavior and is often used as a proxy. Accurate measurement of these behaviors is essential for surveillance, research, and intervention. However, the availability, characteristics, and psychometric quality of validated instruments used to assess these behaviors in Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have not been well documented. This systematic review aimed to identify, describe, and critically appraise the ins

Association between Air Pollution and Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior among Adults Aged 60 Years or Older in China: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in older adults. Promoting physical activity (PA) and avoiding sedentary behavior (SB) serve as key strategies to maintain and improve human health. However, ambient air pollution can adversely affect PA and SB, increasing the risks of health problems. This study aimed to visualize national spatial patterns of average AQI concentration, PA, and SB distributions and to examine the associations between air pollution and PA and SB in a national sample of Chinese older adults aged 60 years or older.

Associations of Objective and Self-Reported Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior with Skeletal Muscle Energetics: The Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA).

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle energetics decline with age, and physical activity (PA) has been shown to counteract these declines in older adults. Yet, many studies were based on self-reported PA or structured exercise interventions. We examined the associations of objective daily PA and sedentary behavior (SB) with skeletal muscle energetics and also compared with self-reported PA and SB. We also explored the extent to which PA would attenuate the associations of age with muscle energetics. METHODS: Among the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA) enrolled older adults, 810 (mean age=76±5

The Impact of Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity on Bone Health: A Narrative Review from the Rehabilitation Working Group of the International Osteoporosis Foundation.

Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) are two key lifestyle factors with profound implications for bone health across the lifespan. While PA is recognized for its positive effects on bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture prevention, emerging evidence highlights the detrimental consequences of prolonged sedentary time, independent of PA levels. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the impact of PA and SB on bone health outcomes, focusing on BMD and fracture risk in children, adolescents, adults, and older populations. A selection of epidemiological studies, systematic rev

Changes in physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and associated motivation after multidisciplinary rehabilitation program for chronic low back pain patients.

Physical activity (PA) is recommended as a primary treatment to reduce pain and improve function in chronic low back pain (cLBP). However, adherence to PA guidelines and the limitation of sedentary behavior (SB) remain challenging for cLBP patients. While some studies focus on PA promotion, past results are mixed, and the role of SB has not been thoroughly investigated. This observational study aims to assess changes in PA and SB levels among cLBP patients participating in a rehabilitation program (RP) and explore related changes in both explicit and implicit motivational factors.
