OBJECTIVE: For many generations, most species of farm animals have been subjected to intense and strictly targeted selection for improvement of their performance traits. This has led to substantial changes in animal anatomy and physiology, which resulted in considerable differences between the current animal breeds and their wild ancestors. The aim of the study was to determine whether there is breed-specific variability in behaviour as well as differences in emotional reactivity and preferences of laying hens.
METHODS: The investigations involved 50 Green-legged Partridge, 50 Polbar, and 50

This study examined the determinants of smallholder dairy farmers' use of breeding services in Nyandarua and Kiambu districts, Central Kenya. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 140 randomly selected respondents. The breeding services considered were artificial insemination (AI), natural bull service, or a combination of AI and bull services. A multinomial logit econometric model was used fitting AI as the base category. There was a negative relationship between higher levels of education, herd size, and location and the use of bull service. However, education, herd size

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a major cereal in Kazakhstan, where diverse breeding material supports crop improvement. We characterized 86 two-row spring barley accessions from six breeding organizations using the Illumina Infinium 50K Barley SNP Array. Analysis of 29,920 high-quality SNPs revealed moderate diversity (He = 0.346, PIC = 0.278, Shannon = 0.752), with 80.84% of molecular variation occurring within and 19.16% among breeding organizations. A minor allele frequency-free (MAF-free) analysis showed that 95.61% of marker-allele combinations at polymorphic loci were shared by at least

To overcome the limitations of conventional analysis of male fertility in animals and humans, proteomic studies have been performed to develop fertility-related biomarkers for prognosis and diagnosis of male fertility. However, the studies were focused on specific species or breeds. Therefore, a study is required to validate whether fertility-related markers would apply to other breeds in pigs. In this study, previously developed fertility-related biomarkers from Landrace were validated to use for prognosis of male fertility in commercially available breeds. Expression level of eight biomarker

The disordered urban growth that may favour the emergence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in cities is a problem of increasing magnitude in middle- and high-income countries in the tropical part of the world. Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers the control and elimination of Ae. aegypti a world-wide high priority as it is the main vector of many rapidly spreading viral diseases, dengue in particular. A major difficulty in controlling the proliferation of this vector is associated with identification of the breeding sites. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be an

Semen quality significantly affects the reproductive performance of ganders. As seasonal breeders, ganders typically experience a decline in semen quality over the breeding season; however, the mechanisms regulating semen quality stability during this period remain poorly understood. Maintaining high semen quality throughout the entire breeding season is crucial for improving production efficiency. In this study, we systematically investigated the semen quality parameters of Tianfu Meat Goose II ganders at three distinct stages of the female geese's annual laying cycle: early (36-week-old), pe

Indirect predictions (IP) are used for young genotyped animals that lack phenotypes (of their own or from progeny) or are from commercial herds. The former can be left behind because they do not contribute to the official genomic evaluations. The latter are often excluded from the evaluations because they are not registered and may not have pedigree information. Including such animals could result in inflated and biased genomic breeding values (GEBV). In Brazil, pedigree, phenotype and genotype information is scarce for important breeds like Brahman, Guzerat, and Tabapua, while the Nellore bre

Seasonal breeding is an important adaptive strategy for animals. Recent studies have highlighted the potential role of the gut microbiota in reproductive health. However, the relationship between the gut microbiota and reproduction in seasonal breeders remains unclear. In this study, we selected a unique single food source animal, the flying squirrel (Trogopterus xanthipes), as a model organism for studying seasonal breeding. By integrating transcriptomic, metabolomic, and microbiome data, we comprehensively investigated the regulation of the gut-metabolism-testis axis in seasonal breeding. He

Selection for fertility in a fall lambing system was applied for 5 yr (1.45 generations) in a crossbred sheep population. Three flocks were involved: a fall-lambing selected (S) flock of 125 ewes and 10 rams, a fall-lambing environmental control (EC) flock of 55 ewes and five rams, and a spring-lambing genetic control flock of 45 ewes and five rams used to produce replacements for EC. Estimated breeding values for fertility (ewes lambing per ewe exposed) were calculated for animals mated in each year of the study using a single-trait animal model and increased more rapidly in S (.0138/yr) than

The domestic dog is assumed by nearly everyone to be the consummate smeller. Within the species Canis familiaris individual breeds, such as the bloodhound or beagle, are known as olfactory stars. These are "scent breeds," a grouping variably defined as a genetic clade or breed class commonly used for scent detection tasks. Previous work suggests that the dog has a more robust olfactory anatomy than many mammal species. Now we undertake a closer investigation of the dog's olfactory system, both in relationship to its closest wild relatives, the wolf and coyote, and across individual breeds. Fir

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dog erythrocyte antigen (DEA 1) in canine population is approximately 40-60%. Often data are limited to a small number of breeds and/or dogs. The aims of this study were to evaluate frequency of DEA 1 in a large population of purebred and mongrel dogs including Italian native breeds and to recognize a possible association between DEA 1 and breed, sex, and genetic and phenotypical/functional classifications of breeds. Frequencies of DEA 1 blood group collected from screened/enrolled blood donors and from healthy and sick dogs were retrospectively evaluated. The bre

The North American Corriente (NAC) is a Criollo-derived cattle breed raised primarily in the Southwestern and Great Plains regions of the United States for rodeo sports and beef production. Despite the substantial practical knowledge surrounding the breed, available information on the genomic makeup of NAC cattle remains limited. To address this gap, a comprehensive genomic analysis of two commercial NAC herds in northeastern New Mexico, United States, was conducted using a ~64 K SNP microarray. A total of 97 NAC cattle were initially sampled; after quality control, relatedness filtering, and

Obesity arises from interactions between several factors including physiology, environment and genes. Studies in humans have revealed that up to 70% of overweight and obesity can be attributed to biological and genetic factors. Thus, rodent models that capture innate susceptibility or resistance to obesity have been invaluable for disentangling inherent drivers of obesity from neurobiological alterations that occur in response to consumption of obesogenic foods and/or increased adiposity. For example, studies of rats selectively bred for their propensity vs resistance to diet-induced weight ga

Genetic diversity is a crucial resource in livestock, determining their traits and ability to respond to selection. Indonesian cattle are unique due to their history of admixture involving both zebu (Bos indicus) and banteng (B. javanicus), and may therefore contain novel cattle genetic resources. We generated whole genome sequences from 126 Indonesian cattle, 51 domesticated banteng and three captive banteng. We show that Indonesian cattle have very high genetic diversity, especially the Madura breed due to introgression from banteng and possibly other Bos species, contributing up to 36.6% of

The English bulldog is notoriously predisposed to a number of disease conditions, including congenital defects, likely due to extreme genetic selection which has reduced genetic variability within this breed. The present report describes, for the first time, the main clinical and pathological features of congenital lung displacement in an English bulldog puppy. The defect involved the entire left lung, which was normally developed but rotated and shifted to the right hemithorax. The pathogenesis of congenital anomalies is largely unknown. characterisation of the genetic bases of these malforma

Testicular development and spermatogenesis play critical roles in male fertility and sexual maturation. To explore the genetic basis and key genes related to sexual maturity, we measured serum testosterone content and analysed testis tissue sections of Large White (LW) and Tongcheng (TC) boars at an immature age. We then screened differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in testis development in both breeds using RNA-seq. Finally, we analysed the selection signatures of both breeds to investigate which DEGs were subjected to positive selection. Our findings showed that serum testosterone contents

The focus of this study is to profile changes in DNA methylation and small RNA expression occurring with increased age in almond breeding germplasm to identify possible biomarkers of age that can be used to assess the potential of individuals to develop aging-related disorders. To profile DNA methylation in almond germplasm, 70 methylomes were generated from almond individuals representing three age cohorts (11, 7, and 2 years old) using an enzymatic methyl-seq approach followed by analysis to call differentially methylated regions (DMRs) within these cohorts. Small RNA (sRNA) expression was p

Little is known about the genetic changes that distinguish domestic cat populations from their wild progenitors. Here we describe a high-quality domestic cat reference genome assembly and comparative inferences made with other cat breeds, wildcats, and other mammals. Based upon these comparisons, we identified positively selected genes enriched for genes involved in lipid metabolism that underpin adaptations to a hypercarnivorous diet. We also found positive selection signals within genes underlying sensory processes, especially those affecting vision and hearing in the carnivore lineage. We o

The objective was to study the use of ultrasound as a complementary test in the breeding soundness evaluation in male pigs and study the pattern of echogenicity of the testicular parenchyma in boars of different racial groups. Twenty-six adult boars from four different racial groups were used, 10 from the Piau breed (group 1), four from the commercial and finishing group (group 2), six Pietrain breed (group 3) and six from the Duroc breed (group 4). All animals were evaluated for breeding soundness evaluation and the ultrasound examination of the testicles. The groups of animals that were eval

Common eland bulls are important game ranching animals in southern Africa, for tourism, breeding/live sales, trophy hunting, and game meat production. Interest has grown in their production potential, intensifying animal husbandry and breeding approaches. However, little scientific information is available regarding the intensive management of this species, including information regarding scientifically based selection criteria for breeding bulls. Often, simple phenotypic traits are utilised unless high-value game animals are being bred, with horn and body size often being the only traits cons
