Magnetic resonance imaging in cadaver dogs with metallic vertebral implants at 3 Tesla: evaluation of the WARP-turbo spin echo sequence.

STUDY DESIGN: Laboratory investigation, ex vivo. OBJECTIVE: Postoperative complications are common after spinal implantation procedures, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) would be the ideal modality to image these patients. Unfortunately, the implants cause artifacts that can render MRI nondiagnostic. The WARP-turbo spin echo (TSE) sequence has been developed to mitigate artifacts caused by metal. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the performance of the WARP-TSE sequence in canine cadaver specimens after implantation with metallic vertebral implants. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUN

[Aspects of FLAIR sequences, 3D-CISS and diffusion-weight MR imaging of intracranial epidermoid cysts].

We propose to assess the usefulness of diffusion-weighted MR Imaging (DWI), fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and constructive interference in steady state (CISS) sequences in depicting epidermoid cysts (EC). FLAIR, CISS and DWI were obtained in 7 patients among 22. All patients were studied with T1 and T2 sequences. On Spin Echo images, EC demonstrate signal similar to LCS, which may lead to difficult differentiation between EC and arachnoid cyst (AC), specially for inexperienced radiologists. EC appear with a heterogeneous signal on T1 images (32%), irregular limits (91%) and with

Breast and axillary tissue MR imaging: correlation of signal intensities and relaxation times with pathologic findings.

We tested a variety of inversion-recovery (IR) and spin-echo (SE) sequences by imaging the breast masses of 22 patients before surgery and 23 tissue specimens with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 0.6 T to determine the most effective pulse sequences to evaluate breast disease. An SE pulse sequence using a long repetition time (TR) of 1,600 msec and a long echo time (TE) of 90 msec was found to be the most sensitive in depicting carcinoma in the excised tissue specimens, with all of the carcinomas (n = 15) demonstrating irregular areas of higher signal intensity (SI) than that of the adjacen

Nucleotide sequences of the infectious DNA clones of two mink enteritis virus isolates exhibit the diversity of the terminal palindromic sequences and predicted secondary structures.

In this study, the infectious RF-DNA clones of two mink enteritis viruses, MEV-SD1 and MEV-SD7, were constructed, which generated progeny virions and seemed to contain an almost or completely full-length genome. The genomes of MEV-SD1 and MEV-SD7 were 5162 bp and 5113 bp in length, respectively. The genomic organizations of MEV-SD1 and MEV-SD7 were similar to that of the other carnivore parvoviruses. The 3'-UTR of the virion strand of MEV-SD1 and MEV-SD7 were 311 bp and 313 bp in length, respectively, containing a 208 bp palindromic sequence assuming Y-shaped configurations. Interestingly, the

A 52-year-old woman with ventricular tachycardia.

CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: A 52-year-old woman with shortness of breath and palpitations was referred to a cardiologist. A 24-hour Holter demonstrated high density (37%) of ventricular premature beats (VPBs) and long runs of non-sustained (eventually sustained) monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) with the same morphology as several VPBs detected in a 12-lead ECG (figure 1A). A transthoracic echocardiogram was performed, and the patient's evaluation was completed with a functional and gadolinium-enhanced cardiovascular MR (CMR) study (figure 1B,C) to assess structural heart disease. Magnetic resonance evidence of cortical onset of multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Despite clinical symptoms and signs of central nervous system dysfunction, conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spinal cord may appear normal in multiple sclerosis (MS) at clinical onset. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate cortical pathology, namely the presence of cortical lesions (CLs) in patients with symptoms/signs suggestive of MS but having normal appearing white matter (WM) on MRI. METHODS: CLs were disclosed by double inversion recovery (DIR) MRI sequence. The final diagnosis of MS was achieved by the demonstration of the dissemination in space and time o

Sharp genetic break between Atlantic and English Channel populations of the polychaete Pectinaria koreni, along the North coast of France.

This study uses enzymatic and mitochondrial genes to infer the relative importance of historical processes and contemporary hydrodynamic features on the observed patterns of genetic structure in subdivided populations of Pectinaria koreni (Polychaeta: Pectinariidae) along the coasts of Brittany and the English Channel. Nucleotide sequence variation of a 603-bp fragment of the mtDNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene revealed a surprisingly deep phylogeographic break of about 16% divergence separating the Brittany and Channel populations, which coincides with a biogeographic boundary along the w

Molecular characterization of germline NF2 gene rearrangements.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant disease that causes a predisposition to nervous system tumors. Deleterious point mutations have been found in about 55% of NF2 patients, and large genomic deletions account for approximately 33% of NF2 gene alterations. The majority of these deletions are larger than 50 kb, with a breakpoint usually lying outside the NF2 gene. We identified two cases of intragenic deletion with loss of 1.5 and 40 kb, respectively. In both cases, one boundary of the deletion was located in or at the proximity of an SVA sequence in NF2 intron 4. No sequence

Cytogenetics of malignant gliomas. II. The sex chromosomes with reference to X isodisomy and the role of numerical X/Y changes.

Sex chromosomal monosomy with total loss of an X or Y is frequently observed in malignant gliomas. Beyond that, not much is known about the behavior of the sex chromosomes in these tumors. We noted loss of the X from 3 of 13 gliomas from women (23%) compared to loss of the Y from 16 of 28 gliomas from men (57%). There were two structural rearrangements of the Y (an inversion and a translocation with chromosome 4). Most unexpectedly, clones with sex chromosome reversal were encountered in 3 cases. These XX clones in gliomas from men are perforce the consequence of Y loss coupled with X isodisom

Long-read sequencing identifies complex structural variants in DMD patients.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked disorder caused by mutations in the DMD gene. Reports of DMD resulting from complex structural variants involving the DMD gene are rare, partly because such variants are often undetectable by standard diagnostic approaches such as multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and short-read whole-exome sequencing (WES). CASE PRESENTATION: Using long-read sequencing, we identified two unrelated pedigrees with complex structural rearrangements affecting the DMD locus. Case 1 carried an inversion encompassing exon 2 of DMD. Ca

Rapid genotyping of inversion variants in Mucopolysaccharidosis type II using long-range PCR: A case report.

Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II) is a lysosomal storage disease caused by a deficiency in iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS), leading to the accumulation of dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate in lysosomes. Traditionally, genotyping of the IDS gene has been conducted through exome sequencing, which fails to detect inversion variants. Consequently, when no pathogenic variants are detected in exons, additional PCR-based analysis is required. Herein, we introduce a rapid genotyping technique method using long-range PCR for MPS II patients. We successfully identified an inversion variant and confirmed

Higher Gene Flow in Sex-Related Chromosomes than in Autosomes during Fungal Divergence.

Nonrecombining sex chromosomes are widely found to be more differentiated than autosomes among closely related species, due to smaller effective population size and/or to a disproportionally large-X effect in reproductive isolation. Although fungal mating-type chromosomes can also display large nonrecombining regions, their levels of differentiation compared with autosomes have been little studied. Anther-smut fungi from the Microbotryum genus are castrating pathogens of Caryophyllaceae plants with largely nonrecombining mating-type chromosomes. Using whole genome sequences of 40 fungal strain
