Improving systematic rabies surveillance in Cameroon: A pilot initiative and results for 2014-2016.

Canine rabies is endemic in Cameroon, but human rabies exposures and cases are likely underreported because of inadequate surveillance. In 2014, the surveillance network in the West region of Cameroon was reinforced by introducing a new anti-rabies center, a framework for data collection and evaluation, provisions for sample collecting and laboratory confirmation, and training for health professionals. The objective of this observational cohort study was to describe the incidence and characteristics of reported exposures and human and animal rabies cases following this reinforcement of the exi

Practices and Perceptions of Animal Contact and Associated Health Outcomes in Pregnant Women and New Mothers.

Companion animals play an important role in our society. However, pregnant women and new mothers might have specific concerns about animal-associated health outcomes because of their altered immune function and posture as well as their newborn babies. The study was conducted to collect baseline data for developing an evidence-based intervention for pregnant women and new mothers to help them adopt certain behaviors to prevent adverse animal-associated health outcomes. A survey, using the Health Belief Model as the theoretical framework, was developed and administered to 326 women attending the

The development of oral fluid-based diagnostics and applications in veterinary medicine.

The purpose of this review was to discuss the history of the development and implementation of oral fluid diagnostics for infectious diseases of humans and domestic animals. The use of oral fluid for the assessment of health and diagnosis of disease in humans and animals has a surprisingly long history. As early as 1909, Pollaci and Ceraulo reported sensitive and specific agglutination of 'Micrococcus melitensis' (Brucella melitensis) by oral fluid from patients diagnosed with Malta Fever. A 1986 report of the detection of antibodies against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in oral fluid fro

Imported human rabies -New Jersey, 2011.

On July 8, 2011, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) contacted CDC about possible rabies in a hospitalized Haitian woman aged 73 years. Rabies was included in the differential diagnosis because she had acute, progressive encephalitis of unknown etiology. No history of animal exposure had been reported at the time of hospitalization. On July 18, CDC confirmed rabies virus infection, later identified as a canine rabies virus variant present in Haiti. The patient's neurologic status continued to deteriorate, leading to her death on July 20. This report summarizes the

Antirabies treatment in man in relation to epidemiological conditions: Nordrhein-Westfalen 1972.

By means of a questionnaire, official animal disease reports and complementary interviews, the epidemiological situation was comparied in each district of the Land with the post-exposure treatment as practised by the physicians. A close relationship was found between the occurrence of rabies and the geographical distribution of antirabies treatment. This relationship was mainly due to the fact that the majority of patients received antirabies treatment after rabies had been diagnosed in the animal. In 50% of persons showing no visible lesions at the site of exposure, treatment was not started

Perceived coping and healing among Chinese emerging-adult users: The shaping role of AI emotional companion agents.

AI emotional companion agents are increasingly used for everyday emotional support, yet evidence remains limited regarding how observable service cues are translated into proximal, nonclinical support value during an initial encounter. Drawing on a stimulus-organism-response (SOR)-based Service-Psychology-Value (SPV) framework, this study examined 300 Chinese emerging adults aged 18-25 after a standardized first-use experience with an AI animal-companion application. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) supported the proposed direct and indirect associations: sense of c

Behaviour Classification on Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) Using Machine Learning Algorithms on Triaxial Acceleration Data of Two Commonly Used GPS Devices and Its Possible Application for Their Management and Conservation.

Averting today's loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services can be achieved through conservation efforts, especially of keystone species. Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) play an important role in sustaining Africa's ecosystems, but are 'vulnerable' according to the IUCN Red List since 2016. Monitoring an animal's behavior in the wild helps to develop and assess their conservation management. One mechanism for remote tracking of wildlife behavior is to attach accelerometers to animals to record their body movement. We tested two different commercially available high-resolution accelerometers

Trichinella infections in different host species of an endemic district of Serbia.

Trichinella infections are endemic in the Balkan region of Europe. Though trichinellosis and agents thereof are serious problems for human health and animal husbandry, only a limited number of Trichinella isolates from Serbia have been identified at the species level so far. The aim of the present study was the surveillance and monitoring of Trichinella in domestic pigs and wild animals from the endemic district of Branicevo. Investigations performed during the 2009-2010 period revealed Trichinella infections in 344 out of 282,960 (0.12%) domestic pigs. Among wildlife, Trichinella infections w

Tecovirimat: First Global Approval.

Tecovirimat (TPOXX®) is an orthopoxvirus-specific antiviral drug developed by SIGA Technologies in conjunction with the US Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advances Research and Development Authority. It acts by inhibiting the activity of the orthopoxvirus VP37 envelope wrapping protein, thereby preventing the formation of egress-competent enveloped virions, which are essential for dissemination of the virus in the host. In July 2018, oral tecovirimat was approved in the USA for the treatment of human smallpox disease caused by variola virus in adults and paediatric patients

Selective primary health care: strategies for control of disease in the developing world. VIII. African trypanosomiasis.

African trypanosomiasis in humans is caused by trypanosomes, parasitic protozoa that inhabit the blood and tissue spaces. Humans are infected by the bite of the tsetse (Glossina species), which itself acquires the parasites from human or animal hosts. The vector and the disease are confined to sub-saharan Africa where the disease occurs in endemic foci from which epidemics arise. Two forms of African trypanosomiasis in humans are recognized and both are fatal if left untreated. Control strategy is dependent on the capacity of the public health services to diagnose and treat cases, and the main

Community-based symptom reporting among agro-pastoralists and their livestock in Chad in a One Health approach.

One Health Syndromic Surveillance has a high potential for detecting early epidemiological events in remote and hard-to-reach populations. Chadian pastoralists living close to their animals and being socio-economically unprivileged have an increased risk for zoonosis exposure. Engaging communities in disease surveillance could also strengthen preparedness capacities for outbreaks in rural Chad. This study describes a retrospective cross-sectional survey that collected data on clinical symptoms reported in people and livestock in Chadian agro-pastoral communities. In January-February 2018, inte

Pastoralists' Vulnerability to Trypanosomiasis in Maasai Steppe.

Trypanosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease of both livestock and humans. Although pastoral communities of the Maasai Steppe have been able to adapt to trypanosomiasis in the past, their traditional strategies are now constrained by changes in climate and land regimes that affect their ability to move with their herds and continually shape the communities' vulnerability to trypanosomiasis. Despite these constraints, information on communities' vulnerability and adaptive capacity to trypanosomiasis is limited. A cross-sectional study was therefore conducted in Simanjiro and Monduli district

Pancreatic Torsion Resulting in Acute Pancreatic Necrosis in a Young Dog.

We report a case of 7 mo old French bulldog who was referred to North Carolina State University Small Animal Emergency and Triage Services because of acute abdomen, regurgitation, lethargy, and fever. The patient had a history of pulmonic stenosis, which was corrected by balloon valvuloplasty 3 wk before presenting for the current complaint. The patient had nonspecific changes noted on blood work at his referring veterinarian. An abdominal ultrasound examination showed pathological changes that were supportive of a left-limb pancreatic torsion that was confirmed postmortem.

Lacrimal cystadenoma in a Chinese box turtle (Cuora flavomarginata).

An adult male Chinese box turtle (Cuora flavomarginata) presented to the Avian and Exotic Pet Service of the Animal Medical Center for periorbital swelling of the right eye. The swelling had failed to respond to nutritional supplementation and parenteral administration of vitamin A. What had initially presented as periorbital swelling developed into a growth ventral to the globe that impeded vision and was frequently traumatized by forelimb movements of the turtle. Twenty-six months after initial presentation, the turtle was anesthetized and the bulk of the mass was surgically removed. Histopa

[Salmonella dublin on dairy farms in the North of the Netherlands].

During the last century many calves and cows with Salmonella dublin infections are diagnosed in the North of the Netherlands, especially in the province of Friesland. In this paper are retrospectively traced the problems by paratyphoid infections in cattle, from 1919 till now, the diagnosis of which was made at the Animal Health Service in Friesland and North-Netherlands. Over the decennia a decrease is noticed for the percentage of necropsies of calves with S. dublin infections, although some irregular peaks appear. However since 1988 an increase is observed in dairy farms with S. dublin prob
