Sublethal oral exposure to the marine toxin PbTx3: Neurotoxicity assessment in mice.

Brevetoxins (PbTxs) are marine polyether compounds produced by the alga Karenia brevis, which accumulate in shellfish and fish, and transferred through the marine food web. These toxins impact both marine ecosystems and human health. Consumption of contaminated shellfish is the primary cause of Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP), which presents with neurological, gastrointestinal, and/or cardiovascular symptoms that appear in a few hours and typically resolves within 1-3 days, although some disturbances may persist for weeks or months. The acute toxicity of PbTxs involves activation of volta

The benefits of carbon black, gold and magnetic nanomaterials for point-of-harvest electrochemical quantification of domoic acid.

Gold nanostars (GNST), gold nanospheres (GNP) and carbon black (CB) are chosen as alternative nanomaterials to modify carbon screen-printed electrodes (c-SPEs). The resulting three kinds of modified c-SPEs (GNP-SPE, CB-SPE and GNSP-SPE) were electrochemically and microscopically characterized and compared with standardized c-SPEs after pretreatment with phosphate buffer by pre-anodization (pre-SPE). The results show outstanding electrochemical performance of the carbon black-modified SPEs which show low transient current, low capacitance and good porosity. A competitive chronoamperometric immu

The influence of obesity on blood mercury levels for U.S. non-pregnant adults and children: NHANES 2007-2010.

BACKGROUND: In animal studies obesity is associated with higher blood and tissue mercury concentrations; however human studies are lacking. Although the mechanism underlying this association is uncertain, obesity may alter the metabolism and distribution of methylmercury. OBJECTIVES: We determined whether obesity influenced blood mercury levels, the majority of which was methylmercury, for U.S. non-pregnant adults (≥20 years) and children (2-19 years) after controlling for methylmercury intake through fish and shellfish consumption, and other confounders. METHODS: We completed secondary data

Determination of tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline residues in seafood products of Saudi Arabia using high performance liquid chromatography-Photo diode array detection.

Residues of oxytetracycline, tetracycline and chlortetracycline in seafood products of Saudi Arabia were detected by using a simple, sensitive and rapid method via HPLC-PDA. The protein precipitation method that was used for sample extraction demonstrated high recoveries of OTC, TC and CTC. The limits of detection were 0.015 µg/g and 0.025,0.062 µg/g for all TCs in fish and shellfish, respectively. The limits of quantitation were 0.125 µg/g and 0.175 µg/g for all TCs in fish and shellfish, respectively. The method was precise and accurate since the RSD was less than 2%, while the % recovery wa

A comparison of integrated and discrete depth sampling for monitoring toxic species of Dinophysis.

Dinophysis acuminata and Dinophysis acuta produce lipophilic toxins that cause most shellfish harvesting closures in the Atlantic coastal waters of Europe. Dinophysis often exhibit patchy distributions and sampling with conventional methods may fail to detect them. A 6-month calibration study in 2006, plus an additional sampling in 2010 were carried out in Galicia to compare Dinophysis counts obtained from weekly high vertical resolution bottle samples with depth-integrated hose samples. Counts with these two methods were comparable at some depth-ranges, but hose maxima were over one order of

The level of mercury contamination in mariculture sites at the estuary of Pearl River and the potential health risk.

In the present study, the Hg contamination in mariculture sites located at the estuary of Pearl River was to investigate with an attempt to analyse associated health risks of dietary exposure to both total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) in cultured fish and shellfish. The highest total mercury concentration (7.037 ± 0.556 ng L-1) of seawater was observed at Zhuhai Estuary. The Hg concentrations of sediment in Guishan Island were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in Daya Bay (away from the Pearl River). Besides, the both THg and MeHg levels in sediment at mariculture sites were high

Manifestations of food allergy: evaluation and management.

The term "food allergy" refers to adverse immunologic reactions to food. Food allergy is usually mediated by IgE antibody directed to specific food proteins, but other immunologic mechanisms can also play a role. The primary target organs for food allergic reactions are the skin, the gastrointestinal tract and the respiratory system. Both acute reactions (hives and anaphylaxis) and chronic disease (asthma, atopic dermatitis and gastrointestinal disorders) may be caused or exacerbated by food allergy. The foods most commonly causing these reactions in children are milk, egg, peanuts, soy, wheat

Global Occurrence, Environmental Fate, and Toxicological Effects of Okadaic Acid Group Toxins.

Under the impact of global climate change and anthropogenic activities, the distribution of toxigenic microalgae and phycotoxins is expanding rapidly, potentially threatening marine ecosystem health and human health. Okadaic acid group toxins (OAs), a class of lipophilic polyether compounds mainly produced by Dinophysis and Prorocentrum species, are widely distributed globally and affect the growth and development of marine organisms as well as the safety of seafood consumption. Currently, over 60 derivatives of OA have been detected in toxigenic microalgae and shellfish, including various dio

Exploring geographical variances in component-resolved diagnosis within the Asia-Pacific region.

Component-resolved diagnostics (CRD) have revolutionized allergy diagnosis, offering enhanced accuracy and insights into allergen sensitization patterns. This review explores geographical variances in CRD for food and aeroallergens across the Asia-Pacific region. We examine the varying prevalence of allergic diseases and the utility of CRD in diagnosing common food allergies, including peanut, shellfish, fish, wheat, and fruits. Notable differences in serum-specific (sp)IgE sensitization patterns and the clinical relevance of particular allergen components are observed between populations in A

Combining food frequency and survey data to quantify long-term dietary exposure: a methyl mercury case study.

Twenty-four-hour recall data from the Continuing Survey of Food Intake by Individuals (CSFII) are frequently used to estimate dietary exposure for risk assessment. Food frequency questionnaires are traditional instruments of epidemiological research; however, their application in dietary exposure and risk assessment has been limited. This article presents a probabilistic method of bridging the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) food frequency and the CSFII data to estimate longitudinal (usual) intake, using a case study of seafood mercury exposures for two population sub

Amplicon-Based High-Throughput Sequencing Method for Genotypic Characterization of Norovirus in Oysters.

Norovirus is a highly diverse RNA virus often implicated in foodborne outbreaks, particularly those associated with shellfish. Shellfish are filter feeders, and when harvested in bays exposed to wastewater overflow or storm overflows, they can harbor various pathogens, including human-pathogenic viruses. The application of Sanger or amplicon-based high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies to identify human pathogens in shellfish faces two main challenges: (i) distinguishing multiple genotypes/variants in a single sample and (ii) low concentrations of norovirus RNA. Here, we assessed the pe

Present Status, Limitations, and Prospects of Using Streptomyces Bacteria as a Potential Probiotic Agent in Aquaculture.

Streptomyces is a Gram-positive bacterium, belonging to the family Streptomycetaceae and order Streptomycetales. Several strains from different species of Streptomyces can be used to promote the health and growth of artificially cultured fish and shellfish by producing secondary metabolites including antibiotics, anticancer agents, antiparasitic agents, antifungal agents, and enzymes (protease and amylase). Some Streptomyces strains also exhibit antagonistic and antimicrobial activity against aquaculture-based pathogens by producing inhibitory compounds such as bacteriocins, siderophores, hydr

Preliminary results of mercury levels in raw and cooked seafood and their public health impact.

Mercury is toxic for human health and one of the main routes of exposure is through consumption of contaminated fish and shellfish. The objective of this work was to assess the possible mercury contamination of bivalves (Anomalocardia brasiliana, Lucina pectinata, Callinectes sapidus), crustacean (C. sapidus) and fish (Bagre marinus and Diapterus rhombeus) collected on Salinas da Margarida, BA (Brazil), a region which carciniculture, fishing and shellfish extraction are the most important economic activities. The effect of cooking on Hg concentration in the samples was also studied. The result

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Salmonella enterica serotype paratyphi B isolates from environmental and human sources in Galicia, Spain.

Salmonella serotype Paratyphi B isolates obtained from shellfish and human infections in Galicia (northwest Spain) from 1998 were investigated by different phenotypic and genetic methods to evaluate their systemic or enteric nature. Isolates were investigated for D-tartrate fermentation, presence of genes encoding the effector proteins sopE1 and avrA, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profile, and antimicrobial susceptibility. Systemic variant strains (dT-) were the dominant among the marine environment isolates. All dT- isolates were sopE1 positive and avrA negative, presented an indistinguish

Large-scale toxic bloom of Dinophysis acuminata complex following a major flood disaster in southern Brazil.

Dinophysis species are the main producers of diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) in the Southwestern Atlantic, where recurrent blooms frequently lead to shellfish harvesting bans. In 2024, an extreme rainfall event over Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, caused one of the most severe floods ever recorded in the country, and generated an anomalous freshwater discharge through the Patos Lagoon estuary. The resulting low-salinity plume spread northward along the southern Brazilian coast, reaching aquaculture areas hundreds of kilometers away from the estuary. Here, we integrate hydrological

Ultra-high pressure processing modifies crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) texture, flavor, and tropomyosin allergenicity: Elucidating pressure-dependent structure-function relationships.

Ultra-high pressure (UHP: 100-500 MPa) processing was systematically evaluated for its pressure-dependent effects on crayfish sensory quality and tropomyosin (TM) properties. Optimal texture (hardness, springiness, chewiness) and color brightness were achieved at 300 MPa, concurrent with flavor optimization through suppression of off-flavor volatiles (Veratraldehyde, 3-carene) and enhancement of desirable aromas (2-Methyl-3-furanthiol). Pressures >400 MPa induced texture deterioration and color yellowing. UHP concurrently altered TM conformation, modifying secondary/tertiary structures and pro

Effects of marine harmful algal blooms on bivalve cellular immunity and infectious diseases: A review.

Bivalves were long thought to be "symptomless carriers" of marine microalgal toxins to human seafood consumers. In the past three decades, science has come to recognize that harmful algae and their toxins can be harmful to grazers, including bivalves. Indeed, studies have shown conclusively that some microalgal toxins function as active grazing deterrents. When responding to marine Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) events, bivalves can reject toxic cells to minimize toxin and bioactive extracellular compound (BEC) exposure, or ingest and digest cells, incorporating nutritional components and toxins.
