Delayed language access hampers but does not hinder visual statistical learning in deaf and hard of hearing children.

Statistical learning in deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children is poorly understood and the impact of age of sign language acquisition has not been systematically investigated. In the present study, we examined visual statistical learning and transfer effects in early (age of sign language acquisition before the age of three years) and late (age of sign language acquisition after the age of three years) DHH child signers (aged 6-8 years) of German Sign Language, compared to age-matched hearing children. The children completed a visual artificial grammar learning task across three learning ses

Subjective frequency ratings for 432 ASL signs.

Given the importance of lexical frequency for psycholinguistic research and the lack of comprehensive frequency data for sign languages, we collected subjective estimates of lexical frequency for 432 signs in American Sign Language (ASL). Our participants were 59 deaf signers who first began to acquire ASL at ages ranging from birth to 14 years old and who had a minimum of 10 years of experience. Subjective frequency estimates were made on a scale ranging from 1 = rarely see the sign to 7 = always see the sign. The mean subjective frequency ratings for individual signs did not vary in relation

The neural basis of combinatory syntax and semantics.

Human language allows us to create an infinitude of ideas from a finite set of basic building blocks. What is the neurobiology of this combinatory system? Research has begun to dissect the neural basis of natural language syntax and semantics by analyzing the basics of meaning composition, such as two-word phrases. This work has revealed a system of composition that involves rapidly peaking activity in the left anterior temporal lobe and later engagement of the medial prefrontal cortex. Both brain regions show evidence of shared processing between comprehension and production, as well as betwe

Global Regulatory Review Needed for Cochlear Implants: A Call for FDA Leadership.

INTRODUCTION: Using the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as example, we argue that regulatory agencies worldwide should review their guidance on cochlear implants (CIs). METHODS: This is a position paper, thus the methods are strictly argumentation. Here we give the motivation for our recommendation. The FDA's original approval of implantation in prelingually deaf children was granted without full benefit of information on language acquisition, on childcaregiver communication, and on the lived experience of being deaf. The CI clinical trials, accordingly, did not address risks

The complexity in deaf and hard-of-hearing multilingual learner education.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are either born outside of the country they currently receive schooling in or have both parents born outside of that country, using a language other than the national spoken language at home. This group is growing in numbers and contributes significantly to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in Deaf education. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 17 peer-reviewed empirical studies, identifying four educational levels relevant to DMLs: context, organization, educators, and s

Impact of Deafness on the Lateralized Brain Responses to Letters and Digits: A Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation Exploratory Study in Deaf and Hearing Children.

Numbers and letters are culturally created symbols that acquire meaning through extensive training, significantly influencing brain function. The distinct hemispheric specialization of cortical regions for these categories has been hypothesized to relate to the co-activated brain networks: the left language regions for letters, and the right intra-parietal sulcus for numbers. However, the potential influence of deafness and sign language on hemispheric specialization for letters and numbers remains unclear. The present study aims to explore this issue by using a FPVS-EEG approach with an oddba

Neural associations between fingerspelling, print, and signs: An ERP priming study with deaf readers.

Fingerspelling is a leading predictor of reading ability for deaf people who use a signed language, but few neuroimaging studies have examined how it supports reading. We used event-related potentials to investigate how fingerspelled words prime printed words. Twenty-four skilled deaf adult readers completed a Go/No-Go task while viewing printed English word targets following related and unrelated primes in one of three conditions: printed English words, American Sign Language (ASL) signs, and fingerspelled words. N400 priming effects were strong across all three conditions. Early N400 effects

Deaf homesigners can create the foundations of phonetics and phonology without an adult linguistic model.

Children who are exposed to minimal linguistic input can nevertheless introduce linguistic features into their communication systems at the level of morphology, syntax, and semantics (Goldin-Meadow, 2003a). However, it is not clear whether they can do so at the level of phonetics and phonology. This study asks whether congenitally deaf children, unable to learn spoken language and living in a hearing family without exposure to sign language, introduce phonology and phonetics into the gestural communication systems they create, called homesigns. We focused on two foundational properties of phon

Professional development and signed literacy instruction: evidence from a multiple-baseline design.

This study examined whether professional development can translate a signed literacy instruction framework into high-fidelity classroom practice. Four K-3 teachers in an ASL/English bilingual program received a 2-day training followed by bi-weekly virtual coaching; entry into training was staggered in a non-concurrent multiple-baseline single case design. Teachers' use of indicators of signed literacy instruction was scored for at least 7 baseline and 2 intervention instructional units per teacher. Visual analysis showed near-zero fidelity during baseline and an immediate jump to 45%-60% on th

Literacy and signing deaf students: a multi-national scoping review.

Many literature reviews or other types of reviews (e.g., meta-analyses, scoping reviews) in deaf education research are focused upon primarily or exclusively research that is performed in U.S. contexts or English-speaking contexts only. However, research that is conducted in non-English-speaking, non-U.S. settings that may be more likely to be multilingual, has value for our understanding of how deaf students using multiple languages may develop literacy skills. The objective of this review was to explore the literature on literacy development with deaf learners conducted outside of English-sp

Unique N170 signatures to words and faces in deaf ASL signers reflect experience-specific adaptations during early visual processing.

Previous studies with deaf adults reported reduced N170 waveform asymmetry to visual words, a finding attributed to reduced phonological mapping in left-hemisphere temporal regions compared to hearing adults. An open question remains whether this pattern indeed results from reduced phonological processing or from general neurobiological adaptations in visual processing of deaf individuals. Deaf ASL signers and hearing nonsigners performed a same-different discrimination task with visually presented words, faces, or cars, while scalp EEG time-locked to the onset of the first item in each pair w

Reading against all odds: a pilot study of two deaf students with dyslexia.

Learning to read and write is a challenge for most deaf children due to their limited experiences with, and access to, spoken language. In the case of deaf students who have difficulty processing visual print, literacy becomes an even greater challenge. The study piloted an intervention procedure that incorporated the principles of automaticity, repetition, functional vocabulary, and a positive teacher-student relationship as recommended in programs for struggling readers and adapted them to the needs of two deaf high school students with dyslexia in an American Sign Language-English bilingual

"Seeing voices": fused visual/auditory verbal hallucinations reported by three persons with schizophrenia-spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The neurocognitive basis of verbal/auditory hallucinations remains uncertain. A leading hypothesis is that these hallucinations correspond to ordinary inner speech mislabeled as non-self. However, some studies suggest pathogenic activation of receptive language neurocircuitry as the cause. A form of visualized verbal hallucinations not previously reported in the literature is described that may shed light on this controversy. METHOD: Review of three cases. RESULTS: Two patients described visual hallucinations of speech-like lip and mouth movements fused with simultaneous auditory

Carpal tunnel syndrome: the risk to educational interpreters.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a problem associated with numbness, burning, tingling, tickling or "pins and needles" sensations in the hand. The syndrome has been linked to occupations that require repetitive pinching and/or repetitive wrist movements, both movements associated with sign language interpreting. Educational interpretors may be particularly at risk and so need accurate information regarding this malady. Without such education, some interpreters will worry needlessly while others delay in seeking essential medical attention. This article profiles groups at high risk for Carpal Tu

Are deaf students' reading challenges really about reading?

Reading achievement among deaf students typically lags significantly behind hearing peers, a situation that has changed little despite decades of research. This lack of progress and recent findings indicating that deaf students face many of the same challenges in comprehending sign language as they do in comprehending text suggest that difficulties frequently observed in their learning from text may involve more than just reading. Two experiments examined college students' learning of material from science texts. Passages were presented to deaf (signing) students in print or American Sign Lang
