Predictors and moderators of problem-focused social skills training versus resource activation for children with disruptive behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Not all children benefit equally from evidence-based treatments for disruptive behavior disorders (DBD). In a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT), computer-facilitated social skills training (ScouT) demonstrated superior efficacy over solution-focused, resource-oriented treatment (STARK) in reducing parent-rated peer-related aggression in children with DBD. This study explores predictors and moderators of these treatments to determine which subgroups respond differently. METHODS: The sample included N = 100 children aged 6-12 years with DBD and peer-related aggression. Usin

Symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing in 5-year-old children are associated with sleepiness and problem behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children is reportedly associated with problem behaviors suggestive of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; however, there are few data on the relation of SDB to problem behaviors in the general pediatric population. The goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of SDB symptoms in 5-year-old children and their relation to sleepiness and problem behaviors. METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted of a birth cohort of children who were born in eastern Massachusetts. Subjects were 3019 5-year-old children (1551 bo

Endovascular Coil Retrieval Using Dual Synchronous Solitaire Revascularization Devices.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Coil migration is a potential complication of endovascular aneurysm treatment. Dislodged coils into the parent artery require retrieval to prevent thromboembolic complications. A variety of techniques for coil retrieval have been described, including the use of single stentrievers and aspiration catheters. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The use of 2 stentrievers, as opposed to a single device, was thought to be advantageous in coil removal by the additional point of friction due to the extensive length of coil stretching and earlier failure of a single device. CONCLUSION:

Cystic fibrosis: S158N (605G --> A) is a rare genetic variant found in coupling with deltaF508.

A single nucleotide change at codon 158 in exon 4 of the CFTR gene ABCC7 was detected in an asymptomatic individual who carried deltaF508 and had a family history of cystic fibrosis (CF). Further study, using linkage, revealed that S158N was coupled with deltaF508, both having been inherited from the same parent. The clinical implications of double mutations in the same allele are discussed.

MixedUpParents: A New and Improved Method for Genetic Parentage Assignment in Admixed Populations.

Hybridization is ubiquitous throughout the tree of life. Its presence in genetic datasets often violates model assumptions or leads to erroneous inferences. Nonetheless, few parentage assignment methods have been developed that account for hybridization or admixture, particularly in non-model systems. Here, we describe a novel method of parentage analysis, MixedUpParents, that accounts for hybridization by using species-diagnostic single nucleotide polymorphisms while accounting for mixed ancestry within discrete genomic segments. We test MixedUpParents alongside other parentage assignment pro

The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders Among Japanese Children: A Pilot Study.

At present, there is no established cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating emotional disorders in Japanese children. Therefore, we introduced the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children (UP-C) in Japan and adapted it to the Japanese context. We then examined its feasibility and preliminary efficacy using a single-arm pretest, posttest, follow-up design. Seventeen Japanese children aged between 8 and 12 years (female n = 11; male n = 6; M = 10.06 ± 0.97 years) with a principal diagnosis of anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, or depressive disorders,

Sociodemographic Factors Associated With Decreased Compliance to Prescribed Rehabilitation After Surgical Treatment of Knee Injuries in Pediatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation is an important component of care in postsurgical knee patients, especially as it pertains to return to preinjury activity level. Despite the established significance of rehabilitation in improving outcomes after certain surgical procedures, there is a lack of investigation into compliance rates and factors that affect compliance in pediatric patients. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate sociodemographic factors associated with noncompliance in pediatric patients after knee surgery to characterize health disparities in this population. Predicting childhood effortful control from interactions between early parenting quality and children's dopamine transporter gene haplotypes.

Children's observed effortful control (EC) at 30, 42, and 54 months (n = 145) was predicted from the interaction between mothers' observed parenting with their 30-month-olds and three variants of the solute carrier family C6, member 3 (SLC6A3) dopamine transporter gene (single nucleotide polymorphisms in intron8 and intron13, and a 40 base pair variable number tandem repeat [VNTR] in the 3'-untranslated region [UTR]), as well as haplotypes of these variants. Significant moderating effects were found. Children without the intron8-A/intron13-G, intron8-A/3'-UTR VNTR-10, or intron13-G/3'-UTR VNTR

Genomic prediction of single cross families of perennial ryegrass under two nitrogen managements.

The performance of a single cross is determined by the additive effects of the parents and their interactions, which can be estimated through general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA). With genome-wide marker information, it is possible to predict GCA for new parents and the genetic value of unrealized crosses. Several studies in crops such as maize (Zea mays L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) have demonstrated the potential of genomic prediction for single-cross performance. However, no study to date has explored its relevance in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.),

Homologous and heterologous protection after single intranasal administration of live attenuated recombinant Bordetella pertussis.

While single-dose mucosal immunization is best achieved by the use of attenuated live microorganisms, attenuation generally results in decreased immunogenicity. We attenuated Bordetella pertussis by the deletion of the pertussis toxin gene. A single intranasal administration of this strain protected against subsequent challenge as well as did the parent strain and better than immunization with commercial vaccine. Unexpectedly, this attenuation resulted in increased immunogenicity against the protective antigen filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA). In addition, immunogenicity was also enhanced again

Complex segregation analysis of febrile convulsions.

Complex segregation analysis was performed on 467 nuclear families ascertained through febrile-convulsion probands. The probands were identified as having their first febrile convulsion while residents of Rochester, MN, during the years 1935-64. Parents and first- and second-degree relatives of probands were identified through the Olmsted County, MN, record-linkage system. Diagnoses of convulsive activity were made from review of medical records. The genetic models investigated included both single-major-locus and polygenic models, with likelihoods computed jointly on children and parents as w

Penetrance, variable expressivity and monogenic neurodevelopmental disorders.

PURPOSE: Incomplete penetrance is observed for most monogenic diseases. However, for neurodevelopmental disorders, the interpretation of single and multi-nucleotide variants (SNV/MNVs) is usually based on the paradigm of complete penetrance. METHOD: From 2020 to 2022, we proposed a collaboration study with the French molecular diagnosis for intellectual disability network. The aim was to recruit families for whom the index case, diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder, was carrying a pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant for an OMIM morbid gene and inherited from an asymptomatic parent

Emotional and Behavioural Problems among Preschool Children in Northeast Peninsular Malaysia: Parent Report Version.

The rising prevalence of mental health disorders among children is a serious concern. Young children who exhibit early warning signs of mental health issues are more likely to develop symptoms in the same or overlapping regions years later. The research aimed to identify emotional and behavioural problems and associated factors in Malaysian preschools. A sample of young children aged 4-6 years from public and private preschools was chosen using a multistage random sampling method. Data were collected from 18 preschools via a parent survey using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ
