Dynamic trajectory cues drive sequenced integration in approach detectors.

Detecting approaching objects is essential for survival, and studies across animals have identified neurons and circuits selective for objects that grow in size over time, a hallmark of visual approach. However, approach as a physical process generates a rich ensemble of correlated cues governed by geometry and physics, of which size expansion is just one, and how the brain incorporates this broader cue structure to detect approach remains unknown. Here, we show that a visual stimulus without size expansion but with modulated luminance, a cue intrinsic to approach, elicits compelling percepts

[Disturbances of body-experience in acute anxiety and depressive disorders - neuroticism or somatization?].

In view of the uncertain relationship between body related "Boundary loss" and anxiety as well as depression symptoms we carried out the following study. Our aim was to explore these symptoms in their diagnostic and clinical significance and to define body distortions and organic disturbances. We examined the body perception (via Image Marking Procedure), aspects of body image via Body Distortion Questionnaire and via Visual Analogue Scales on self-perception of body weight and size) and body cathexis/satisfaction (via Visual Analogue-Scale) and their changes during hospital treatment in 28 pa

Caffeinated chewing gum enhances maximal strength and muscular endurance during bench press and back squat exercises in resistance-trained men.

INTRODUCTION: Caffeinated chewing gum, known for its rapid absorption, has not been previously studied for its effects on maximal strength and muscular endurance in resistance exercise. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of caffeinated chewing gum on maximal strength and muscular endurance during bench press and back squat exercises. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind design, 16 resistance-trained males (age: 21.6 ± 2.0 years, height: 176.8 ± 6.1 cm, mass: 79.6 ± 8.8 kg) chewed either caffeinated gum (3 mg/kg) or a placebo gum on two occasions, 1 week apart. After a stand

Size constancy in visual impairment: a comparison with normally sighted individuals.

Size judgements are usually based on size constancy. However, as the number of visual cues decreases, such as by decreasing the field of view, size judgements gradually change from those based on size constancy to those based on the visual angle. The present study investigated whether visually impaired (VI) individuals, most of whom do not have measurable stereoacuity and have visual field defects, might therefore make judgements based on visual angle rather than size constancy. Size constancy was measured on 42 VI and 20 normally sighted subjects. Results indicated that size judgements are si

Lesion correlates of impaired acoustic-phonetic perception after unilateral left hemisphere stroke.

Acoustic-phonetic perception refers to the ability to perceive and discriminate between speech sounds. Acquired impairment of acoustic-phonetic perception is known historically as 'pure word deafness' and typically follows bilateral lesions of the cortical auditory system. The extent to which this deficit occurs after unilateral left hemisphere damage and the critical left hemisphere areas involved are not well defined. We tested acoustic-phonetic perception in 73 individuals with chronic left hemisphere stroke and performed multivariate lesion-symptom mapping incorporating controls for non-sp

The downsized hand in personal neglect.

Introduction: Personal neglect (PN) refers to a form of hemi-inattention toward the contralesional body space and it usually occurs following a right brain lesion. Recent studies suggest that PN indicates a disorder of body representation. Specifically, patients with PN show difficulties in identifying differences between left and right hands and have an altered visuospatial body map, which is associated with disrupted mental body representations. However, the metric representation of the body, and in particular the hands, has not been systematically addressed in patients showing this form of

Impaired spatial performance in cerebellar-deficient Lurcher mice is not associated with their abnormal stress response.

Both humans and laboratory animals suffering from cerebellar lesions exhibit cognitive as well as many emotional and behavioral abnormalities. These latter have been already observed in the cerebellar mutant mice currently used to highlight some aspect of autism spectrum disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of cerebellar-related stress response abnormalities on spatial learning and memory. Cerebellar-deficient Lurcher mutant mice were exposed to water environment without active escape possibility and then tested for spatial learning in the Morris water maze. As a m

Body image measurement in eating disorders.

The current paper reviews the methods used for assessing body image in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A major concern in the assessment of body image in the area of eating disorders has been the apparent failure to recognize the complexity of the body image construct. The development of a range of standardized measures of body image has been an important advancement in recent years; however, it would be premature to assume that any of these methods assesses body image in its entirety. Rather, each provides an operational index of one aspect of this multidimensional construct. The relati

Detection of symmetry and anti-symmetry.

To assess the role of second-order channels in symmetry perception we measured the effects of check size, spatial frequency content, eccentricity and grey scale range on the detection of symmetrical and anti-symmetrical patterns. Thresholds for symmetrical stimuli were only moderately affected by these manipulations. Anti-symmetrical stimuli composed of large black and white checks elicited low thresholds. However, anti-symmetry became essentially undetectable at small check sizes. Removing low frequencies from large-check-size, anti-symmetrical stimuli had little effect on thresholds whereas

Neural mechanisms of perceptive and affective processing of body stimuli in anorexia nervosa - are there developmental effects?

Different components of body image processing seem to be reflected by different neural mechanisms. A core symptom of Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a disturbance of body image with correlates found on a neural level. The present study focuses on the neural processing of visual body stimuli of different weight categories in adolescent and adult AN patients. Thirty-three adolescents aged 12-18 years (15 AN patients, 18 control participants) and 36 adult women (19 AN patients, 17 control participants) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while performing a perceptive and an affective

Blended-Learning Pain Neuroscience Education for People With Chronic Spinal Pain: Randomized Controlled Multicenter Trial.

BACKGROUND: Available evidence favors the use of pain neuroscience education (PNE) in patients with chronic pain. However, PNE trials are often limited to small sample sizes and, despite the current digital era, the effects of blended-learning PNE (ie, the combination of online digital media with traditional educational methods) have not yet been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to examine whether blended-learning PNE is able to improve disability, catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, and illness perceptions. DESIGN: This study was a 2-center, triple-blind randomized controlled tr

Human yaw rotation aftereffects with brief duration rotations are inconsistent with velocity storage.

In many sensory systems, perception of stimuli is influenced by previous stimulus exposure such that subsequent stimuli may be perceived as more neutral. This phenomenon is known as an aftereffect and has been studied for vision, audition, and some vestibular stimuli including roll and translation. Previous data on yaw rotation perception has focused on low-frequency stimuli on the order of a minute which may not be directly applicable to frequencies during ambulation. The aim of the current study is to look at the influence of yaw rotation on subsequent perception near 1 Hz, the predominant f

Effects of object motion on visual acuity in honeybees.

Object motion is a fundamental visual cue for many animals, yet its role in modulating visual perception is not fully understood. The majority of previous studies have used stationary stimuli to investigate the visual acuity of insects such as honeybees. Here, we used a behavioural assay to investigate whether object motion influences the known bounds of bees' visual acuity. Using a Y-maze, we conducted binary choice experiments where honeybees (Apis mellifera) were trained to a stimulus and then tested with pairs of stimuli varying in shape (disc versus diamond), size and motion (stationary v

Distinct representations for facial identity and changeable aspects of faces in the human temporal lobe.

The neural system underlying face perception must represent the unchanging features of a face that specify identity, as well as the changeable aspects of a face that facilitate social communication. However, the way information about faces is represented in the brain remains controversial. In this study, we used fMR adaptation (the reduction in fMRI activity that follows the repeated presentation of identical images) to ask how different face- and object-selective regions of visual cortex contribute to specific aspects of face perception. We report that activity in the face-selective region of

The impact of depression on musical ability.

BACKGROUND: While there is sustained effort to refine the models and to further decrypt the neuronal underpinnings of cerebral music perception, empirical investigations on the associations of music perception with diagnoses others than focal brain damage need to be amplified. METHODS: In the present study, a validated and standardized clinical test of musical ability was applied to a sample of severely depressed patients. Basic musical capacities of rhythm, melody and pitch perception, recognition of emotions, and musical memory were evaluated and compared to matched healthy controls and rea
