Infant Social Withdrawal Behavior: A Key for Adaptation in the Face of Relational Adversity.

As a result of evolution, human babies are born with outstanding abilities for human communication and cooperation. The other side of the coin is their great sensitivity to any clear and durable violation in their relationship with caregivers. Infant sustained social withdrawal behavior (ISSWB) was first described in infants who had been separated from their caregivers, as in Spitz's description of "hospitalism" and "anaclitic depression." Later, ISSWB was pointed to as a major clinical psychological feature in failure-to-thrive infants. Fraiberg also described freezing behavior as one of the

Independent Medical Examinations: facts and fallacies.

BACKGROUND: Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) have protected the rights of workers in the United States since the first laws protecting employees were established in the early 1900s. There have been many social advancements and a great collective struggle over the last 100 years that have ultimately lead to justice for the injured or disabled worker. OBJECTIVE: We describe the origins of the IME as well as the evolution of both medical and social processes that have provided the legal framework for the correct practice of IMEs. This article will summarize the current medical principles,

Mixed strongyle parasite infections vary across host age and space in a population of feral horses.

Identifying factors that drive among-individual variation in mixed parasitic infections is fundamental to understanding the ecology and evolution of host–parasite interactions. However, a lack of non-invasive diagnostic tools to quantify mixed infections has restricted their investigation for host populations in the wild. This study applied DNA metabarcoding on parasite larvae cultured from faecal samples to characterize mixed strongyle infections of 320 feral horses on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2014 to test for the influence of host (age, sex and reproductive/social status) and en

One Pandemic, Two Solutions: Comparing the U.S.-China Response and Health Priorities to COVID-19 from the Perspective of "Two Types of Control".

After three years of global rampage, the COVID-19 epidemic, the most serious infectious disease to occur worldwide since the 1918 influenza pandemic, is nearing its end. From the global experience, medical control and social control are the two main dimensions in the prevention and control of COVID-19. From the perspective of "two types of control", namely medical control and social control, this paper finds that the political system, economic structure, and cultural values of the United States greatly limit the government's ability to impose social control, forcing it to adopt medical control

Addictions, Social Deprivation and Cessation Failure in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Survivors.

AIM: To evaluate the evolution of addictions (tobacco and alcohol) and social precarity in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma survivors when these factors are addressed from the time of diagnosis. METHODS: Addictions and social precarity in patients with a new diagnosis of HNSCC were assessed through the EPICES score, the Fagerström score, and the CAGE questionnaire. When identified as precarious/dependent, patients were referred to relevant addiction/social services. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty-two patients were included. At the time of diagnosis, an active tobacco consumption was as

Group size modulates kinship dynamics and selection on social traits.

An individual's relatedness to its group may change with age due to demographic processes, and such kinship dynamics can shape age-linked social behaviors. Existing models, however, have focused almost exclusively on dispersal and mating, leaving the consequences of group size local variation unexplored. Here, we extend these models to incorporate such variation within a single, genetically connected meta-population. We then contrast predicted kinship dynamics and age-linked selection for helping/harming in coexisting smaller and larger groups in three typical social mammal systems characteriz

Trends in self-reported headache disorder in Spain between 2006 and 2023: the role of sociodemographic factors.

INTRODUCTION: Headache conditions impose a significant global socioeconomic burden; however, long-term trends in their prevalence remain underexplored. This study aimed to analyze the evolution in self-reported headache disorder (SRHD) in Spain from 2006 to 2023, focusing on its relationship with demographic factors (sex, age, and social class) and the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional study using seven national health surveys in Spain (2006–2023; 37,429 − 41,929 participants) analyzed SRHD adjusted by sex, age, social class, and education. Trends w

Bats expand their vocal range by recruiting different laryngeal structures for echolocation and social communication.

Echolocating bats produce very diverse vocal signals for echolocation and social communication that span an impressive frequency range of 1 to 120 kHz or 7 octaves. This tremendous vocal range is unparalleled in mammalian sound production and thought to be produced by specialized laryngeal vocal membranes on top of vocal folds. However, their function in vocal production remains untested. By filming vocal membranes in excised bat larynges (Myotis daubentonii) in vitro with ultra-high-speed video (up to 250,000 fps) and using deep learning networks to extract their motion, we provide the first

Host-parasite genotypic interactions in the honey bee: the dynamics of diversity.

Parasites are thought to be a major driving force shaping genetic variation in their host, and are suggested to be a significant reason for the maintenance of sexual reproduction. A leading hypothesis for the occurrence of multiple mating (polyandry) in social insects is that the genetic diversity generated within-colonies through this behavior promotes disease resistance. This benefit is likely to be particularly significant when colonies are exposed to multiple species and strains of parasites, but host-parasite genotypic interactions in social insects are little known. We investigated this

A sterility-associated long noncoding RNA involved in honey bee caste determination and adult queen and worker fertility.

Insect sociality is a major evolutionary transition based on the suppression of worker reproduction in favor of a queen's reproductive monopoly. Although sophisticated insect societies have arisen independently on multiple occasions in the Hymenoptera (bees, ants, and wasps), how worker sterility evolved through natural selection is not fully understood. In honey bees (Apis mellifera), dietary cues (royal or worker jelly) and social chemical signals (e.g., queen pheromones) promote caste differentiation by modulating the levels of juvenile hormone (JH), the key physiological orchestrator of ca

Expectations and boundaries for Big Data approaches in social medicine.

It seems no longer possible to produce knowledge, even biological knowledge regardless of social, cultural and economic environments in which they were observed. Therefore never the term "social medicine" or more generally "social biology" has appeared more appropriate. This way of linking the social and the biological exceeds the sole social medicine by involving also other medical disciplines. As such, forensics, whose an important activity is represented by clinical forensics in charge of types of violence (physical, psychological, sexual, abuse) and persons held in custody could see its pr

Loss of pair formation predates the evolution of male-less society in termites.

Asexual lineages are rare in social animals with biparental care, where successful reproduction typically requires coordinated behavior between two individuals of opposite sex. Male-less lineages of the termite Glyptotermes nakajimai provide a unique opportunity to unravel how sexual reproduction can be lost in such animals. Here, we show that modification of the mate-pairing process predated the evolution of asexual populations. Termite colonies are typically initiated by a mating pair that searches for a nest site through a tandem courtship behavior. Our comparative analysis of tandem runnin

Chapter 53: rehabilitation therapies.

This chapter retraces the history and evolution of rehabilitative efforts by physicians and other health professionals to alleviate the symptoms and disabilities associated with neurological disorders. Rehabilitation therapies often provide interventions that go beyond traditional medical treatment aimed at treating impairments, and help those with neurological injuries and illness to re-establish themselves as productive and socially-integrated citizens by reducing their functional disabilities. The chapter considers the early history of practical treatments developed in Greek and Roman times

Neuropathic pain after epidural needle trauma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurologic complications secondary to epidural block are uncommon. Direct mechanical trauma to nerve roots may cause neuropathic pain that, usually, has a favorable evolution; however, it is a potentially severe complication that can evolve into a chronic disorder. The objective of this study was to discuss acute traumatic neuropathic pain and, especially, its treatment. CASE REPORT: A male patient was admitted for surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux via laparoscopy and scheduled to be discharged on the first postoperative (PO) day. He underwent epidural b

Occult spinal dysraphism: neurogenic voiding dysfunction and long-term urologic follow-up.

From 1976 to 1994, we followed 55 children with occult spinal dysraphism (OSD). The average age at diagnosis was 4.5 years (range: 24 days - 21 years). In 13 cases the OSD was associated with anorectal anomalies. Urologic symptoms were present at diagnosis in 24 children (43%), but urinary incontinence affected all patients in the evolution of the OSD. At diagnosis, all children underwent complete neurourologic and urodynamic evaluation. Nine required early neurosurgical correction, before 3 years of age. During follow-up, intermittent clean catheterization was started in all patients. Vesicou

Origin of adaptations to open environments and social behaviour in sabretoothed cats from the northeastern border of the Tibetan Plateau.

The iconic sabretooth Homotherium is thought to have hunted cooperatively, but the origin of this behaviour and correlated morphological adaptations are largely unexplored. Here we report the most primitive species of Amphimachairodus (Amphimachairodus hezhengensis sp. nov.), a member of Machairodontini basal to Homotherium, from the Linxia Basin, northeastern border of the Tibetan Plateau (9.8-8.7 Ma). The long snout, laterally oriented and posteriorly located orbit of Amphimachairodus suggest a better ability to observe the surrounding environment, rather than targeting single prey, pointing

Mysterious cohabitation with socially assistive robots among three underserved groups.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigates how underserved individuals-older adults, low-income middle-aged men, and adults with disabilities-develop long-term relationships with an AI-powered socially assistive robot (SAR) named Hyodol. We examined how these relationships evolve over eight months and why emotional outcomes differ across three groups. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using Colaizzi's phenomenological method, the research team analyzed 13,403 conversational segments from 12 highly engaged SAR users (four from each group). Iterative coding procedures with high inter-rater r

Reciprocity: weak or strong? What punishment experiments do (and do not) demonstrate.

Economists and biologists have proposed a distinction between two mechanisms--"strong" and "weak" reciprocity--that may explain the evolution of human sociality. Weak reciprocity theorists emphasize the benefits of long-term cooperation and the use of low-cost strategies to deter free-riders. Strong reciprocity theorists, in contrast, claim that cooperation in social dilemma games can be sustained by costly punishment mechanisms, even in one-shot and finitely repeated games. To support this claim, they have generated a large body of evidence concerning the willingness of experimental subjects
