The safe management and sustainable utilization of phosphogypsum (PG) tailings in Guizhou, China, represent a pressing issue. High dosage incorporation of PG into karst soil has emerged as a promising approach. This method not only addresses the long-term storage issue of substantial PG tailings but also has the potential to enhance soil fertility. However, its safety risks to soil and food chain remain unclear. Through pot experiments, we incorporated 10-20% PG into limestone soil and yellow soil from the Karst region. The findings indicated significant increases in soil organic carbon (from

Altitude and soil depth were associated with vegetation, soil properties, and microbial communities in alpine ecosystems, yet a comprehensive understanding of how these gradients shape soil microbial and physicochemical characteristics on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau remains limited. Along altitudinal gradients (low, mid, and high) and soil depths (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm), we systematically investigated vegetation traits, soil physicochemical properties, microbial community composition, functional pathways, and co-occurrence networks. Aboveground biomass, community-weighted height, and soi

Soil type imposes multilayered environmental filtering via physical structure, chemical properties, and resource availability, shaping microbial community assembly. Using 70 samples (black soil n = 27, meadow soil n = 32, and brown soil n = 11) from a typical black soil region of the Songnen Plain, we compared brown soil (forestland) with black soil and meadow soil (cropland) via 16S rRNA V3-V4 (primers 338F/806R) and fungal (ITS1, primers ITS1F/ITS2) amplicon sequencing and physicochemical analyses. The results showed (1) significantly higher organic carbon in brown soil than in black and mea

Atmospheric deposition of sulfate-rich particles derived from gypsum mining and industrial processing can significantly alter soil solution chemistry in tropical environments. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of continuous sulfate deposition on soil solution chemical speciation along the soil profile in areas influenced by a gypsum dust plume. The Grajaú gypsum production hub has maintained structured industrial activity for at least 20 years, with accelerated growth occurring between 2005 and 2015. Soil samples were collected across distinct landscape units and depths (0.0-0.2, 0.4-0.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in the Pampas Region of Argentina declined substantially during the second half of the twentieth century, primarily due to land-use change and low-residue agricultural systems. Recent process-based simulations have suggested that the widespread adoption of no-till practices, increased crop productivity, and more diversified rotations may have halted these losses and shifted regional systems toward a new equilibrium. However, empirical validation at regional scale remains limited. We conducted a georeferenced paired-site resampling of 40 agricultural sites origi

The remediation of contaminated soils is essential for restoring land productivity and soil health. Pteris vittata L., an arsenic hyperaccumulator, has been widely used for phytoremediation, yet its ecological effects on soil systems remain insufficiently understood. In this field study, we evaluated the influence of Pteris vittata L. remediation on soil physico-chemical properties, microbial diversity, and molecular ecological networks. The results showed that long-term arsenic contamination significantly reduced soil total carbon, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus, simplified bacteria

Heavy metals in soil pose serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. The application of nanomaterials in the remediation process of heavy metal contaminated soil has made significant progress. This work investigated the impact of hollow mesoporous MnO2 nanomaterials (HMN) on soil aggregates and microbial communities during soil remediation process. The study found that applying HMN promotes the formation of large aggregates, and the microbial communities that improve soil structural functions were more sensitive to HMN in the remediation process of Cd-contaminated soils, wh

The use of insects in organic management systems is expanding due to their ability to recycle waste into valuable co-products for agriculture, notably frass, constituted by the insect's excrements, larval exuviae, and remaining undigested feedstock. This study aimed to assess the effects of different application rates of frass (0.16, 0.32, 0.64, 1.28, 2.56 and 5.12%) produced by black soldier fly Hermetia illucens larvae (BSFL) on the survival and reproduction of two non-target invertebrate species, the enchytraeid Enchytraeus crypticus and the collembolan Folsomia candida, and early developme

The rising prevalence of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) in soils has raised concerns about their impacts on soil ecosystems and carbon cycling. This study investigates the effects of different BMPs on soil carbon cycling, focusing on soil respiration, enzyme activities, and carbon use efficiency (CUE) from 13C-labeled dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in an upland soil. The BMPs tested were polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and polylactic acid (PLA), at high (H, 1% w/w) and low (L, 0.1% w/w) concentrations. Over a 64-day incubation, cumulative CO2 emissio

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in wheat fields has caused serious food safety issues in China. Manganese (Mn)-containing materials have been widely used in paddy fields to reduce Cd accumulation in rice. However, the remediation effects of MnSO4 in wheat fields have not been well studied and the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Our field experiment showed that the application of 0.1% and 0.2% MnSO4 in soil reduced Cd concentrations significantly in wheat root, stem, leaf, and grain by 26.67-30.76%, 15.78-29.30%, 22.03-30.66%, and 30.57-50.55%, respectively, while increasing Mn concentratio

Contamination of agricultural soil with cadmium (Cd) has become a global concern because of its adverse effects on ecohealth and food safety. Soil amendment with biochar has become one of the phytotechnologies to reduce soil metal phyto-availability and its potential risks along the food chain. Biochar, derived from cocoa pod, was evaluated in soil Cd fractions (exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable, and residual) by modified Commission of the European Communities Bureau of Reference sequential extraction and its efficacy to ameliorate Cd toxicity to soil enzymes and leaf bioactive compounds. Soil water repellency (hydrophobicity) prevents water from wetting or infiltrating soils, triggering changes in the ecosystems. Fire may develop, enhance or destroy hydrophobicity in previously wettable or water-repellent soils. Soil water repellency is mostly influenced by the quality and quantity of soil organic matter, particularly the lipid fraction. Here we report the results of a study on the effect of fire on the distribution of soil lipids and their role in the hydrophobicity grade of six particle size fractions (2-1, 1-0.5, 0.5-0.25, 0.25-0.1, 0.1-0.05 and <0.05mm) of an Arenosol unde

The current work is an attempt to illustrate the importance of using passive soil gas as an innovative investigation technique in the assessment of soil and groundwater pollutions that emanates from volatile hydrocarbon activities in newly emerging countries. Bazian Oil Refinery as one of the largest refinery in Iraqi Kurdistan Region produces 40,000 barrels a day and provides a wide range of petroleum products for daily consumption. The types and scale of different process that happen in this industrial site have led to concerns with regard to its impact on both the soil and groundwater the v

Soil microorganisms are fundamental drivers of nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning in agricultural soils, but their responses to management practices in acidic agroecosystems remain insufficiently understood. Acidification-induced changes in soil environmental conditions can constrain bacterial activity and disrupt carbon and nutrient transformation processes. This study investigated how straw return combined with different amendments affects soil enzyme activities and bacterial community structure in acidic purple soil under a 2-year rice-rapeseed rotation system. Six management treatm

Mining activities have generated extensive areas of degraded land worldwide, particularly in polymetallic mining regions where severe heavy-metal contamination and poor soil structure constrain ecological restoration. To overcome the limitations of conventional restoration-such as high cost, long duration, and secondary pollution-We have innovatively proposed a soil restoration technology derived from solid waste. A reconstructed soil matrix was prepared by precisely blending fly ash, blast furnace slag, desulfurization gypsum, municipal sludge, and rice straw. Combined with mineral-functional

Fungal and bacterial communities were characterized at three soil depths (0-3.5 cm, 3.5-7.5 cm, and 7.5-15 cm) in a 15-year no-till field experiment involving diversified crop rotations with two levels of nitrogen fertilization and soybean monoculture. We hypothesized that community patterns associated with agricultural practices would be most evident in the uppermost soil layer, and that potentially plant-pathogenic taxa would be more abundant under soybean monoculture. Bacterial community composition varied with soil depth but not among agricultural practices. In contrast, fungal community c

Rice straw is rich in organic matter and essential nutrients, an important resource for improving soil fertility and enzyme activity. However, its high carbon-nitrogen ratio leads to slow decomposition, affecting nutrient transformation efficiency. The small molecular carbohydrates released during microbial enzymolysis not only serve as an energy source but may also act as signaling molecules, participating in the regulation of soil microbial community structure and plant root development. This review discusses the effects of straw return to the field on soil organic carbon (SOC) stability, mi

Biochar is widely used as a soil amendment; however, information regarding its effects on soil microbial communities under tetracycline (TET) stress remains limited. In this study, metagenomic sequencing was employed to investigate the effects of TET contamination and biochar amendment on soil microbial community profiles, the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) genes through a pot experiment. Results showed that TET exposure reduced microbial diversity and evenness, and significantly altered the relative abundance of dominant microbes (e.

Thiacloprid (THI) has accumulated significantly in agricultural soil. Herein, a novel approach to removing THI was explored by straw biochar-loaded iron and manganese oxides (FeMn@BC) to activate the persulfate (PS). The factors influencing the removal of 5 mg kg-1 THI from the soil by FeMn@BC/PS were investigated, including FeMn@BC dosing, PS dosing, temperature, and soil microorganisms. The feasibility was demonstrated by the 75.22% removal rate of THI with 3% FeMn@BC and 2% PS at 7 days and a 92.50% removal rate within 60 days. Compared to the THI, NH4+-N and available potassium were 3.96 a
