We propose that the complex formed by the Pharyngeal Recess and Eustachian Tube, acts as an acoustic passageway for sounds originating inside the body: sounds made by one's voice, breathing, mastication, one's heartbeats. The antagonistic effect of two sets of muscles, one innervated by the trigeminal nerve, the other by the vagal nerve and cervical plexus, enables the body to modulate transmission of sound via this passageway and hence modulate the awareness of body sounds. Impairment of this system can be due to local factors, such as adhesions over the pharyngeal recess or inflammation insi

Under normal hearing conditions, comparisons of the sounds reaching each ear are critical for accurate sound localization. Asymmetric hearing loss should therefore degrade spatial hearing and has become an important experimental tool for probing the plasticity of the auditory system, both during development and adulthood. In clinical populations, hearing loss affecting one ear more than the other is commonly associated with otitis media with effusion, a disorder experienced by approximately 80% of children before the age of two. Asymmetric hearing may also arise in other clinical situations, s

Perceptual consequences of disrupted auditory nerve activity were systematically studied in 21 subjects who had been clinically diagnosed with auditory neuropathy (AN), a recently defined disorder characterized by normal outer hair cell function but disrupted auditory nerve function. Neurological and electrophysical evidence suggests that disrupted auditory nerve activity is due to desynchronized or reduced neural activity or both. Psychophysical measures showed that the disrupted neural activity has minimal effects on intensity-related perception, such as loudness discrimination, pitch discri

Accurate sound localization is critical to navigation and foraging in echolocating animals. During both passive listening and active echolocation, bats are thought to rely solely on interaural level differences (ILDs) between the two ears, attaining very large ILDs by orienting their outer ears apart. However, detecting weak prey echoes during high-speed foraging should instead favor target-focused pinnae that maximize sonar range and reduce clutter interference. Therefore, we propose that flying bats orient their pinnae toward prey. We test this hypothesis using a unique wind tunnel and by em

OBJECTIVE: Localisation of low- and high-frequency sounds in single-sided deaf cochlear implant users was investigated using noise stimuli designed to mitigate monaural localisation cues.
DESIGN: Within subject design. Sound source localisation was tested in the horizontal plane using an array of seven loudspeakers along the azimuthal angle span from -90° to +90°. Stimuli were broadband noise and high- and low-frequency noise.
STUDY SAMPLE: Twelve adult subjects with single-sided deafness participated in the study. All had normal hearing in the healthy ear and were supplied with a cochlear i

Although performance with bilateral cochlear implants is superior to that with a unilateral implant, bilateral implantees have poor performance in sound localisation and in speech discrimination in noise compared to normal hearing subjects. Studies of the neural processing of interaural time differences (ITDs) in the inferior colliculus (IC) of long-term deaf animals, show substantial degradation compared to that in normal hearing animals. It is not known whether this degradation can be ameliorated by chronic cochlear electrical stimulation, but such amelioration is unlikely to be achieved usi

OBJECTIVE: Patients with bilateral aural atresia often exhibit poor sound localisation due to bone conduction (BC) features. However, most patients using cartilage conduction (CC) hearing aids reported improvement of sound localisation.
DESIGN: CC hearing aids were fitted binaurally. Subsequently, sound localisation was evaluated in three conditions: unaided, aided with previously used hearing aids (air conduction or BC hearing aids), and aided with CC hearing aids. Ears were evaluated with eight loudspeakers positioned in a full-circle at 45-degree interval. Loudspeakers were classified into

Substrate gleaning is a foraging strategy in which bats use a mixture of echolocation, prey-generated sounds, and vision to localize and hunt surface-dwelling prey. Many substrate-gleaning species depend primarily on prey-generated noise to hunt. Use of echolocation is limited to general orientation and obstacle avoidance. This foraging strategy involves a different set of selective pressures on morphology, behavior, and auditory system organization of bats compared to the use of echolocation for both hunting and navigation. Gleaning likely evolved to hunt in cluttered environments and/or as a

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is an evoked potential in the brainstem's neural centers in response to sound stimuli. Clinically, characteristic waves, especially Wave V latency, extracted from ABR can objectively indicate auditory loss and diagnose diseases. Several methods have been developed for the extraction of characteristic waves. To ensure the effectiveness of the method, most of the methods are time-consuming and rely on the heavy workloads of clinicians. To reduce the workload of clinicians, automated extraction methods have been developed. However, the above methods also have lim

Reductions in sound-evoked activity in the auditory nerve due to hearing loss have been shown to cause pathological changes in central auditory structures. Hearing loss due strictly to the aging process are less well documented. In this study of CBA/CaH mice, we provide evidence for age-related pathology in the endbulb of Held, a large axosomatic ending arising from myelinated auditory nerve fibers. Endbulbs are known to be involved in the processing of temporal cues used for sound localization and speech comprehension. Hearing thresholds as measured by auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresh

Sound source localization in "cocktail-party" situations is a remarkable ability of the human auditory system. However, the neural mechanisms underlying auditory spatial attention are still largely unknown. In this study, the "cocktail-party" situations are simulated through multiple sound sources and presented through head-related transfer functions and headphones. Furthermore, the scalp time-varying network of auditory spatial attention is constructed using the high-temporal resolution electroencephalogram, and its network properties are measured quantitatively using graph theory analysis. Spatial hearing, and more specifically the ability to localize sounds in space, is one of the most studied and best understood aspects of hearing. Because there is no coding of acoustic space at the receptor organ, physiological sensitivity to spatial aspects of sounds first emerges in the central nervous system. Much progress has been made in the identification and characterization of the circuits in the auditory brainstem that create sensitivity to binaural and monaural cues toward acoustic space. We review the progress over the past third of a century, with a focus on the mammalian brainste

The physiological hearing range of turtles is approximately 50-1000 Hz, as determined by cochlear microphonics ( Wever and Vernon, 1956a). These low frequencies can constrain sound localization, particularly in red-eared slider turtles, which are freshwater turtles with small heads and isolated middle ears. To determine if these turtles were sensitive to interaural time differences (ITDs), we investigated the connections and physiology of their auditory brainstem nuclei. Tract tracing experiments showed that cranial nerve VIII bifurcated to terminate in the first-order nucleus magnocellularis

1. The specificity for the location of a sound source in azimuth was measured in single neurons of the anterior ectosylvian (AE) region of the cat's cortex, which includes the anterior auditory field (AAF) and the anterior ectosylvian auditory field (AEA). 2. The influence of visual experience on auditory spatial tuning of these neurons was determined by comparing responses in cats with binocular deprivation from birth with those in normal control cats. 3. Spatial tuning was measured under near free-field conditions by presenting broadband sounds through a speaker in seven different azimuthal

A remarkable example of rapid perceptual learning is the visual recalibration of auditory spatial perception, which can result in either a bias (ventriloquism after-effect) or an improvement (multisensory enhancement) in auditory localization. Here, we examine the possibility that these after-effects might depend on two distinct neural pathways (geniculostriate vs. collicular-extrastriate). To this end, patients with a lesion of the striate cortex (hemianopic patients) or temporoparietal cortex (neglect patients) were asked to localize weak sounds, before and after a brief exposure to repetiti

Here, we present a protocol for evaluating auditory function and synaptic molecular-structural integrity in mice, specifically female GluA3-knockout (GluA3KO) mice raised in quiet or ambient sound levels. We describe steps for combining auditory brainstem response recordings, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. We detail procedures for assessing hearing function, the expression and localization of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA)-type glutamate receptor subunits, and the ultrastructure of cochlear-ribbon synapses. This protocol provides a reproducible framew

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is characterized by an increased hearing threshold and poor speech understanding in a noisy environment, slowed central processing of acoustic information, and impaired localization of sound sources. Presbycusis seriously affects the older people's quality of life. Particularly, hearing loss in the elderly contributes to social isolation, depression, and loss of self-esteem. Current amplification methods related to auditory rehabilitation can provide improved communication ability to users. But, simple auditory rehabilitation is ineffective in managing th

Two cases of double outlet of the right ventricle with an anterior aorta to the left of the pulmonary artery are described. Both in situs solitus. One had an anterior interventricular communication, and other had a middle posterior communication. The importance of the aortic component of the second sound is analyzed with regard to its localization and intensity. An analysis is also made of the morphology of the cardiac silhouette and the peculiarities of the electrocardiogram as diagnostic aides in the malformation. Considerations are made of the distinct theories which explain the malformatio

The incidence of single-sided deafness(SSD) is increasing year by year. Due to the hearing defects of one ear, the ability of sound localization, speech recognition in noise, and quality of life of patients with single-sided deafness will be affected to varying degrees. This article reviews the intervention effects of different types of bone conduction hearing aids in patients with single-sided deafness and asymmetric hearing loss, and the differences of intervention effects between bone conduction hearing aids, contralateral routing of signal(CROS) aids, and cochlea implant(CI), to provide a
