Environmental and microbial factors influence affective and cognitive behavior in C57BL/6 sub-strains.

C57BL/6 mice are one of the most widely used inbred strains in biomedical research. Early separation of the breeding colony has led to the development of several sub-strains. Colony separation led to genetic variation development driving numerous phenotypic discrepancies. The reported phenotypic behavior differences between the sub-strains were, however; not consistent in the literature, suggesting the involvement of factors other than host genes. Here, we characterized the cognitive and affective behavior of C57BL/6J and C57BL/6N mice in correlation with the immune cell profile in the brain.

Reduced activity within the dorsal endogenous orienting of attention network to fearful expressions in youth with disruptive behavior disorders and psychopathic traits.

Using behavioral and blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) response indices through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the current study investigated whether youths with disruptive behavior disorders (conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder) plus psychopathic traits (DBD + PT) show aberrant sensitivity to eye gaze information generally and/or whether they show particular insensitivity to eye gaze information in the context of fearful expressions. The participants were 36 children and adolescents (ages 10-17 years); 17 had DBD + PT and 19 were healthy comparison subjects. Pa

Lipopolysaccharide exposure during late embryogenesis triggers and drives Alzheimer-like behavioral and neuropathological changes in CD-1 mice.

INTRODUCTION: Infections could contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology in human. However, experimental evidence for a causal relationship between infections during the prenatal phase and the onset of AD is lacking. METHODS: CD-1 mothers were intraperitoneally received lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with two doses (25 and 50 μg/kg) or normal saline every day during gestational days 15-17. A battery of behavioral tasks was used to assess the species-typical behavior, sensorimotor capacity, anxiety, locomotor activity, recognition memory, and spatial learning and memory in 1-, 6-, 12-, 1

Performance costs when emotion tunes inappropriate cognitive abilities: implications for mental resources and behavior.

Emotion tunes cognition, such that approach-motivated positive states promote verbal cognition, whereas withdrawal-motivated negative states promote spatial cognition (Gray, 2001). The current research examined whether self-control resources become depleted and influence subsequent behavior when emotion tunes an inappropriate cognitive tendency. In 2 experiments, either an approach-motivated positive state or a withdrawal-motivated negative state was induced, and then participants completed a verbal or a spatial working memory task creating conditions of emotion-cognition alignment (e.g., appr

Confocal Laser Microscopy Analysis of Listeria monocytogenes Biofilms and Spatially Organized Communities.

The behavior of Listeria monocytogenes communities in the food chain is closely associated with their spatial organization. Whether as biofilms on industrial surfaces or as microcolonies in food matrices, the resulting physiological diversification combined with the presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) triggers emergent community functions involved in the pathogen survival and persistence (e.g., tolerance to dehydration, biocides, or preservatives). In this contribution, we present a noninvasive confocal laser microscopy (CLM) protocol allowing exploration of the spatial organi

Behavioral and neurochemical characterization of the mlh mutant mice lacking otoconia.

Otoconia are crucial for the correct processing of positional information and orientation. Mice lacking otoconia cannot sense the direction of the gravity vector and cannot swim properly. This study aims to characterize the behavior of mergulhador (mlh), otoconia-deficient mutant mice. Additionally, the central catecholamine levels were evaluated to investigate possible correlations between behaviors and central neurotransmitters. A sequence of behavioral tests was used to evaluate the parameters related to the general activity, sensory nervous system, psychomotor system, and autonomous nervou

Behavioral alterations in a mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy induced by intrahippocampal injection of kainate.

Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy are frequently afflicted with psychiatric comorbidity and deficits in spatial and other forms of declarative memory. The relationship between epilepsy and psychopathology is poorly understood, so that systematic research in this area is important. In the present study, we characterized various behaviors and learning and memory in a mouse model in which major aspects of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy can be reproduced. In this model, a single unilateral injection of kainate into the dorsal hippocampus induces a nonconvulsive status epilepticus, followed by de

Informing early intervention through an occupational science description of infant-toddler interactions with home space.

OBJECTIVE: The study provides a substantive description of infant and toddler play with everyday objects and independent negotiation of home space. METHOD: A grounded theory approach was used to study 18 typically developing children longitudinally from ages 1 to 18 months. Data from 133 home visits included videotaped self-directed play sessions with usual objects, maternal interviews, and observation records. RESULTS: Infant Space Theory is a substantive theory of infant-toddler interactions with the spaces and objects of the home. This contextualized view of the infant-toddler describes p

The formation of trajectories during goal-oriented locomotion in humans. I. A stereotyped behaviour.

Human locomotion was investigated in a goal-oriented task where subjects had to walk to and through a doorway starting from a fixed position and orientation in space. The door was located at different positions and orientations in space, resulting in a total of 40 targets. While no specific constraint was provided to subjects in terms of the path they were to follow or the expected walking speeds, all of them generated very similar trajectories in terms of both path geometry and velocity profiles. These results are reminiscent of the stereotyped properties of the hand trajectories observed in

Competition for space among sessile marine invertebrates: changes in HSP70 expression in two Pacific cnidarians.

The role of stress proteins-either constitutive (HSC) or inducible (HSP)-of the HSP70 family in intra- and interspecific competition for space was examined in two sessile Pacific cnidarians. Anthopleura elegantissima, an intertidal anemone, and Corynactis californica, a subtidal corallimorpharian, express HSP70 in the absence of apparent physical stress. HSP70 protein expression is concentrated in the tentacles of A. elegantissima when the animal is exposed to contact with other benthic organisms. Under the same conditions, however, HSP concentrations are similar in the body and tentacles of C

Effects of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury on weight gain and chronic behavioral outcomes in male rats.

To assess the long-term behavioral effects of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI), we employed a preclinical model of rmTBI and performed a battery of behavioral tests starting 14 weeks post-injury. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received four unilateral mild (6 m/s; 0.5 mm depth) controlled cortical impacts (CCI), centered 4 mm posterior and 3-4 mm lateral to the bregma, administered at five-day intervals. The animals' weights were monitored throughout the study. We tested the rats for anxiety-like (elevated plus maze, open field test), depression-like (forced swim test), locomotor (rota

Dopamine transporter knockdown mice in the behavioral pattern monitor: A robust, reproducible model for mania-relevant behaviors.

Efforts to replicate results from both basic and clinical models have highlighted problems with reproducibility in science. In psychiatry, reproducibility issues are compounded because the complex behavioral syndromes make many disorders challenging to model. We develop translatable tasks that quantitatively measure psychiatry-relevant behaviors across species. The behavioral pattern monitor (BPM) was designed to analyze exploratory behaviors, which are altered in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), especially during mania episodes. We have repeatedly assessed the behavioral effects of reduce

Search strategy analysis of Tg4-42 Alzheimer Mice in the Morris Water Maze reveals early spatial navigation deficits.

Spatial disorientation is one of the earliest symptoms in Alzheimer's disease and allocentric deficits can already be detected in the asymptomatic preclinical stages of the disease. The Morris Water Maze (MWM) is used to study spatial learning in rodent models. Here we investigated the spatial memory of female 3, 7 and 12 month-old Alzheimer Tg4-42 mice in comparison to wild-type control animals. Conventional behavior analysis of escape latencies and quadrant preference revealed spatial memory and reference memory deficits in female 7 and 12 month-old Tg4-42 mice. In contrast, conventional ana

Flexible utilization of spatial- and motor-based codes for the storage of visuo-spatial information.

Working memory provides flexible storage of information in service of upcoming behavioral goals. Some models propose specific fixed loci and mechanisms for the storage of visual information in working memory, such as sustained spiking in parietal and prefrontal cortex during working memory maintenance. An alternative view is that information can be remembered in a flexible format that best suits current behavioral goals. For example, remembered visual information might be stored in sensory areas for easier comparison to future sensory inputs, or might be re-coded into a more abstract action-or

Perinatal SSRI exposure permanently alters cerebral serotonin receptor mRNA in mice but does not impact adult behaviors.

PURPOSE: Associations have been made between maternal selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) use during pregnancy and altered behavior in offspring, including an increased risk of autism. Given the important role serotonin plays in behavior, we hypothesized SSRI exposure in the perinatal period would alter central serotonin receptor expression and program adult behaviors in mice. METHODS: Female mice were injected with sertraline or saline throughout pregnancy. Offspring continued to receive injections on postnatal days 1-14, a time period in mice similar to the third trimester in huma

Neurocognitive stages of spatial cognitive mapping measured during free exploration of a large-scale virtual environment.

Using a novel, fully mobile virtual reality paradigm, we investigated the EEG correlates of spatial representations formed during unsupervised exploration. On day 1, subjects implicitly learned the location of 39 objects by exploring a room and popping bubbles that hid the objects. On day 2, they again popped bubbles in the same environment. In most cases, the objects hidden underneath the bubbles were in the same place as on day 1. However, a varying third of them were misplaced in each block. Subjects indicated their certainty that the object was in the same location as the day before. Compa

Competitive equivalence maintains persistent inter-clonal boundaries.

Clear boundaries often separate adjacent conspecific competitors. These boundaries may reflect bordering animal territories or regions of inter-organism contact in mobile and non-mobile organisms, respectively. Sessile, clonal organisms often form persistent inter-clonal boundaries despite great variation in competitive ability among genotypes within a population. I show that neighboring clones in the sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima and three species of the marine hydroid genus Hydractinia are more evenly matched in terms of competitive ability than expected by chance. Spatial working memory is preserved in rats treated with anabolic-androgenic steroids.

The effects of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) compounds on spatial working memory were evaluated in male rats. Thirty days of administration of a high dose of three individual AAS compounds (17 alpha-methyltestosterone, methandrostenolone, or testosterone cypionate) had no effects on spatial memory or motivation as tested on a delayed non-match-to-sample radial arm maze task. Administration of these AAS compounds at doses within the human abuse range does not impair spatial working memory in rats.

The effect of corticosterone on reactivity to spatial novelty is mediated by central mineralocorticosteroid receptors.

Corticosterone, secreted by the adrenal glands, binds to central mineralocorticoid receptors with high affinity and to glucocorticoid receptors with a tenfold lower affinity. In previous studies we have shown that the selective activation of either mineralocorticoid receptors or glucocorticoid receptors exerts distinctly different behavioural effects. In this study we examined in particular the mineralocorticoid receptor-mediated effect of corticosterone on the control of the behavioural response of male Wistar rats to spatial novelty. This analysis was based on our observation that in adrenal

Telencephalic afferents to the caudolateral neostriatum of the pigeon.

The pigeon caudolateral neostriatum (NCL) shares a dopaminergic innervation with mammalian frontal cortical areas and is implicated in the regulation of avian cognitive behavior. Retrograde tracing methods were used to identify forebrain projections to NCL and to suggest a possible role of this area in mediating spatial behavior. NCL receives telencephalic projections from the hyperstriatum accessorium, cells along the border of hyperstriatum dorsale and hyperstriatum ventrale, anterolateral hyperstriatum adjacent to the vallecula, confined cell groups within the anterior neostriatum, and subd
