Spatiotemporal dynamics of the unprecedented chikungunya outbreak in Guangdong, China.

In 2025, Guangdong province, China, experienced an unprecedented autochthonous chikungunya outbreak associated with a cluster of imported cases. We analyzed weekly city-level surveillance data and found that the outbreak exhibited a distinct two-peak pattern, with an initial outbreak in Foshan city followed by a larger outbreak in the neighbouring city of Jiangmen, together contributing more than 80% of the 23,464 confirmed cases reported in Guangdong. Space-time analysis identified five significant clusters, including two single-city hotspots corresponding to Foshan (July 20-August 16) and Ji

Spatio-temporal modelling and prediction of malaria incidence in Mozambique using climatic indicators from 2001 to 2018.

Accurate malaria predictions are essential for implementing timely interventions, particularly in Mozambique, where climate factors strongly influence transmission. This study aims to develop and evaluate a spatial-temporal prediction model for malaria incidence in Mozambique for potential use in a malaria early warning system (MEWS). We used monthly data on malaria cases from 2001 to 2018 in Mozambique, the model incorporated lagged climate variables selected through Deviance Information Criterion (DIC), including mean temperature and precipitation (1-2 months), relative humidity (5-6 months)

Spatial modeling of the population dynamics of Anopheles mosquitoes in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, whose parasites are transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes, remains a major public health burden in Madagascar despite the control measures led by the National Malaria Control Program. Understanding the population dynamics of Anopheles mosquitoes is therefore essential to optimize malaria surveillance and control. This study aimed to develop a model incorporating environmental, climatic and agricultural determinants of Anopheles abundance to predict their spatiotemporal distribution. METHODS: We developed a model of spatiotemporal dynamics for four Anopheles species, vectors

Spatiotemporal dynamics of epidemiology diseases: mobility based risk and short-term prediction modeling of COVID-19.

Nowadays, epidemiological modeling is applied to a wide range of diseases, communicable and non-communicable, namely AIDS, Ebola, influenza, Dengue, Malaria, Zika. More recently, in the context of the last pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO), several studies applied these models to SARS-CoV-2. Despite the increasing number of researches using spatial analysis, some constraints persist that prevent more complex modeling such as capturing local epidemiological dynamics or capturing the real patterns and dynamics. For example, the unavailability of: (i) epidemiological inform

Spatiotemporal dynamics of Ixodes ricinus abundance in northern Spain.

Ixodes ricinus is the most medically relevant tick species in Europe because it transmits the pathogens that cause Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Northern Spain represents the southernmost margin of its main European range and has the highest rate of Lyme borreliosis hospitalisations in the country. Currently, the environmental determinants of the spatiotemporal patterns of I. ricinus abundance remain unknown in this region and these may differ from drivers in highly favourable areas for the species in Europe. Therefore, our study aimed to understand the main factors modulating

Conditional Degradation of UNC-31/CAPS Enables Spatiotemporal Analysis of Neuropeptide Function.

Neuropeptide release from dense-core vesicles in Caenorhabditis elegans is promoted by UNC-31, ortholog of the calcium-dependent activator protein for secretion (CAPS). Loss of UNC-31 causes multiple phenotypes in C. elegans including reduced motility, retention of late-stage eggs, and reduction in evoked synaptic release. However, the ability to analyze UNC-31 function over discrete timescales and in specific neurons is lacking. Here, we generated and validated a tool to enable UNC-31 expression and spatiotemporal functional analysis. We show that endogenously tagged UNC-31 is expressed in ma

Palm Oil in Myanmar: A Spatiotemporal Analysis of the Effects of Industrial Farming on Biodiversity Loss.

BACKGROUND: Palm oil consumption is potentially deleterious to human health, and its production has resulted in 11 million hectares of deforestation globally. Importing roughly 394,000 metric tons of palm oil in 2012 alone, the Burmese government has recently pushed for intensive oil palm development to sate domestic demand for consumption and become international market players. Given well-studied linkages between biodiversity loss and ecosystem instability, this study aims to characterize the nature of deforestation for oil palm production in Myanmar, its relationship to increased biodiversi

Spatial PM2.5, NO2, O3 and BC models for Western Europe - Evaluation of spatiotemporal stability.

BACKGROUND: In order to investigate associations between air pollution and adverse health effects consistent fine spatial air pollution surfaces are needed across large areas to provide cohorts with comparable exposures. The aim of this paper is to develop and evaluate fine spatial scale land use regression models for four major health relevant air pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, BC, O3) across Europe. METHODS: We developed West-European land use regression models (LUR) for 2010 estimating annual mean PM2.5, NO2, BC and O3 concentrations (including cold and warm season estimates for O3). The models w

Phase-lags in large scale brain synchronization: Methodological considerations and in-silico analysis.

UNLABELLED: Architecture of phase relationships among neural oscillations is central for their functional significance but has remained theoretically poorly understood. We use phenomenological model of delay-coupled oscillators with increasing degree of topological complexity to identify underlying principles by which the spatio-temporal structure of the brain governs the phase lags between oscillatory activity at distant regions. Phase relations and their regions of stability are derived and numerically confirmed for two oscillators and for networks with randomly distributed or clustered bimo

Wildland Arson as Clandestine Resource Management: A Space-Time Permutation Analysis and Classification of Informal Fire Management Regimes in Georgia, USA.

Forest managers are increasingly recognizing the value of disturbance-based land management techniques such as prescribed burning. Unauthorized, "arson" fires are common in the southeastern United States where a legacy of agrarian cultural heritage persists amidst an increasingly forest-dominated landscape. This paper reexamines unauthorized fire-setting in the state of Georgia, USA from a historical ecology perspective that aims to contribute to historically informed, disturbance-based land management. A space-time permutation analysis is employed to discriminate systematic, management-orient

Spatiotemporal transcriptomics for tumour microenvironment remodelling in cancer progression and therapy.

BACKGROUND: Spatiotemporal transcriptomics (STT) integrates spatially resolved gene expression with temporal information derived from staged samples, paired treatment specimens, or computational inference, providing a framework for reconstructing tissue-level dynamics. In the tumour microenvironment (TME), STT extends static molecular and cellular maps by revealing how cellular neighbourhoods and functional niches are reorganised during tumour evolution. MAIN TEXT: This review examines how STT characterises TME remodelling during malignant transformation, invasion, metastasis, ageing, and tre
