Wildlife remains an important source of zoonotic diseases for the most vulnerable groups of humans, primarily those living in rural areas or coexisting with forest. The Upper Paraná Atlantic forest of Misiones, Argentina is facing ongoing environmental and anthropogenic changes, which affect the local biodiversity, including the bush dog (Speothos venaticus), a small canid considered Near Threatened globally and Endangered locally. This project aimed to expand the knowledge of zoonotic parasites present in the bush dog and the potential implications for human health and conservation medicine.

BACKGROUND: Food-borne helminthiases (FBHs) have become increasingly important due to frequent occurrence and worldwide distribution. There is increasing demand for developing more sensitive, high-throughput techniques for the simultaneous detection of multiple parasitic diseases due to limitations in differential clinical diagnosis of FBHs with similar symptoms. These infections are difficult to diagnose correctly by conventional diagnostic approaches including serological approaches.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, antigens obtained from 5 parasite species, namely Cysticercus

Pigs act as the intermediate hosts of the zoonotic tapeworms Taenia solium and Taenia asiatica, as well as of the non-zoonotic Taenia hydatigena. In Vietnam, human taeniasis and cysticercosis have been reported throughout the country; however, data on porcine cysticercosis are scarce. Our study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Taenia spp. in slaughtered pigs in two districts in Phu Tho, a mountainous province in northern Vietnam from where neurocysticercosis patients commonly originate. The carcasses of 399 pigs from 51 small-scale abattoirs were checked for cysticerci, while tongue, liver,

Vector-borne illnesses pose a rising global threat to pet health, with Babesia gibsoni being the most common haemoprotozoan infection in canines of South India. Low parasitaemia either in early or late infection is a big hurdle in the diagnosis of canine babesiosis. The present study aimed to differentiate the early and late B. gibsoni infections in dogs using IgM/IgG ELISA based on recombinant thrombospondin-related adhesive protein (BgTRAP). The N-terminal BgTRAP gene was cloned into pET32a, expressed in BL21 Escherichia coli cells, and purified to get the recombinant protein. Using the reco

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis and toxocarosis caused by the genus of Echinococcus and Toxocara spp. are among important helminthic diseases worldwide. Limited data on the prevalence of these parasites persuaded us to determine the prevalence of E. granulosus, E. multilocularis, and T. canis infections in domestic dogs in rural areas of Ahvaz, southwestern Iran. Fecal samples from 167 domestic dogs were examined using both microscopy and PCR techniques. Multiplex PCR was performed for the presence of Echinococcus, and Taenia spp. and single PCR for detection of T. canis and Toxascaris leonina.

The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of helminth eggs excreted in the faeces of stray cats, dogs and in soil samples. A total of 505 fresh samples of faeces (from 227 dogs and 152 cats) and soil were collected. The egg stage was detected via microscopy after the application of formalin-ether concentration technique. Genomic DNA was extracted from the samples containing hookworm eggs and used for further identification to the species level using real-time polymerase chain reaction coupled with high resolution melting analysis. Microscopic observation showed that the overa

We report four asymptomatic patients from Nepal with an incidental finding of a dead intraocular helminth parasite on ophthalmological routine examination. Because the patients were asymptomatic and the intraocular helminth parasites dead without noted pathology present, it was decided to abstain from surgical removal and pursue a watch-and-wait strategy. The clinical follow-up of the four patients over two years was uneventful and showed no complications. We conclude that dead intraocular helminth parasites in asymptomatic patients without apparent pathology do not require surgical removal.

Frogs are the main source of infection for human sparganosis. In this study, the prevalence and pathogenicity of plerocercoid larvae (sparganum) in frogs collected from the Yangtze River Delta in East China were investigated. A total of 386 frogs belonging to five species were purchased from farmers' markets across all three provincial level areas in the Yangtze River Delta region. The overall prevalence was 4.9% (19/386), and 39 spargana were detected visually, with the intensity ranging from 1 to 11. The spargana infection rate was 7.7% (11/143) in Jiangsu Province and 4.4% (8/181) in Shangh

Broad tapeworms (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea) are the principal agents of widespread food-borne cestodosis. Diphyllobothriosis and diplogonoporosis, caused by members of the genera Diphyllobothrium, Diplogonoporus and Adenocephalus, are the most common fish cestodoses with an estimated 20million people infected worldwide, and has seen recent (re)emergences in Europe due to the increasing popularity of eating raw or undercooked fish. Sparganosis is a debilitating and potentially lethal disease caused by the larvae of the genus Spirometra, which occurs throughout much of the (sub)tropics and is

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of larval cestodiases in humans primarily depends on using imaging techniques in combination with serological tests. However, in case of atypical imaging results, negative serology results due to immunosuppression, or infection with rare taeniid species, traditional diagnostic tools may not provide a definitive species-level diagnosis. We aimed to validate a rapid, reliable, and cost-effective single-step real-time PCR method that can identify and differentiate larval cestodiases from biopsy material.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) in stray dogs and cats, including hookworm infection, strongyloidiasis, and toxocariasis, are prevalent globally. The lack of STH control in these stray animals leads to an increased prevalence of STHs in southern Thailand. Suddenly, the El Niño 2014-2016 induced a 14-month-long drought. We thus aimed to compare the prevalence of STHs in stray cats in artificial wet sandy soil (unaffected area) and dry sandy soil (affected area) before and after drought. Furthermore, we also observed the prevalence of STHs in stray dogs in another study area be

OBJECT: Cerebral sparganosis is a rare but underestimated parasitic disease caused by infestation by sparganum. It is difficult to make a confirmed preoperational diagnosis of this disease given the absence of characteristic clinical manifestations. A detailed protocol for the diagnosis and treatment of cerebral sparganosis is still lacking in the literature. In this article the authors set out comprehensive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of cerebral sparganosis, describing the use of a stereotactic aspiration technique complemented by microsurgery based on experience gained from m

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminthiasis remains a significant public health concern in Bangladesh, affecting both humans and animals. Conventional copromicroscopic methods, though widely used, often lack sensitivity, particularly in areas with low prevalence and intensity of infection. ParaEgg, a new diagnostic tool, has been developed to improve the efficiency of copromicroscopic detection. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ParaEgg in detecting intestinal helminth infections in humans and dogs compared to commonly used traditional methods.
METHODS: A cross-sectional stu

Although the prevalence of schistosomiasis japonica has declined gradually in China, more accurate and sensitive diagnostic methods are urgently needed for the prevention and control of this disease. Molecular diagnostic methods are advantageous in terms of sensitivity and specificity, but they are time-consuming and require expensive instruments and skilled personnel, which limits their application in low-resource settings. In this study, an isothermal DNA amplification assay and recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) combined with lateral flow dipstick (LFD) were set up. It was used to d
