Regional modulation of the ankle plantarflexor muscles associated with standing external perturbations across different directions.

Maintenance of upright standing posture has often been explained using the inverted pendulum model. This model considers the ankle plantarflexors to act as a single synergistic group. There are differences in muscle properties among the medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG and LG, respectively) and the soleus that may affect their activation. Twelve volunteers participated in an investigation to determine whether the activation of the ankle plantarflexor muscles was modulated according to perturbation direction during unilateral standing perturbations of 1% body mass. High-density surface elec

Impotence and genital numbness in cyclists.

Cyclists often complain of genital numbness and even of impotence. The purpose of this study was to determine if perineal compression during cycling causes changes in the penile blood supply, impotence and penile numbness. Forty healthy athletic men with a mean age of 30 +/- 5.3 years took part in the study. Transcutaneous penile oxygen pressure was obtained using a device consisting of a modified Clark pO2 electrode, attached to the glans of the penis. All men were measured in a standing position before, in a seated and standing position during and in a standing position after cycling. Additi

Everyday positioning experience in typically developing infants and infants with or at risk for cerebral palsy.

Infant positioning throughout everyday routines impacts physical growth, motor skill advancement, and access to learning opportunities supporting cognitive, social, and communicative development. However, we know little about everyday positioning experiences in infants with or at risk for developmental disabilities like cerebral palsy (CP) and how they differ from those of their typically developing peers. This study used Ecological Momentary Assessment to estimate time spent in different categories of posture (supine, prone, sitting, standing, and suspended) and support (self-support, adult s

The influence of spasticity in the lower limb muscles on gait pattern in children with sacral to mid-lumbar myelomeningocele: a gait analysis study.

Gait analysis and recording of standing position were performed in 38 ambulatory children with myelomeningocele. Thirty-four were independent ambulators and four required a walking aid. All subjects were assigned one of four muscle function groups based on muscle strength. They were also divided into subgroups based on the distinction between flaccid and spastic paresis in the lower limb joints. A comparison was made between the gait pattern of the children with spasticity and that of the children with flaccid paresis in each muscle function group. Spasticity in only the ankle joint muscles in

Influence of Recent Standing, Moving, or Sitting on Daytime Ambulatory Blood Pressure.

Background There are no recommendations for being seated versus nonseated during ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring (ABPM). The authors examined how recent standing or moving versus sitting affect average daytime BP on ABPM. Methods and Results This analysis used baseline assessments from a clinical trial in desk workers with office systolic BP (SBP) 120 to 159 mm Hg or diastolic BP (DBP) 80 to 99 mm Hg. ABPM was measured every 30 minutes with a SunTech Medical Oscar 2 monitor. Concurrent posture (standing or seated) and moving (steps) were measured via a thigh-worn accelerometer. Linea

Positional variation in hemodynamic and morphologic parameters of the iliofemoral venous segment in healthy volunteers.

OBJECTIVE: Iliofemoral venous stenting has become the standard of care for patients with quality-of-life-impairing manifestations of chronic iliac venous obstruction. The initial diagnosis of chronic iliac venous obstruction is through the use of duplex ultrasound (DUS). Here, set diameters are used for each segment (common femoral vein [CFV], external iliac vein [EIV], and common iliac vein [CIV]) to determine if a patient has venous stenosis or not. However, there is concern that DUS measurements obtained in the supine position (standard approach) are different from those when the person is

Upright versus recumbent lumbar spine MRI: do findings differ systematically, and which correlates better with pain? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Recumbent MRI is the most widely used image modality in people with low back pain (LBP), however, it has been proposed that upright (standing) MRI has advantages over recumbent MRI because of its ability to assess the effects of being weight-bearing. It has been suggested that this produces systematic differences in MRI parameters and differences in the correlation between MRI parameters and pain or disability in patients thus, potentially adding clinically helpful information. PURPOSE: This paper aims to review and summarize the available empirical evidence for or against

Older adults and individuals with Parkinson's disease control posture along suborthogonal directions that deviate from the traditional anteroposterior and mediolateral directions.

A rich and complex temporal structure of variability in postural sway characterizes healthy and adaptable postural control. However, neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, which often manifest as tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia, disrupt this healthy variability. This study examined postural sway in young and older adults, including individuals with Parkinson's disease, under different upright standing conditions to investigate the potential connection between the temporal structure of variability in postural sway and Parkinsonism. A novel and innovative method called orie

The effect of chronic low back pain on postural control during quiet standing: A meta-analysis.

Low back pain (LBP) has been associated with altered body sway during quiet standing, but the pattern of results is inconsistent. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to examine the effects of vision (eyes open, eyes closed) and changing the support surface (foam surface, firm surface) on postural sway during quiet standing in individuals with chronic LBP (cLBP). Five electronic databases were searched on March 27th, 2022. Of 2,856, 16 studies (n = 663) were included. Across all conditions, we found a positive and medium effect size (g = 0.77 [0.50, 1.04]) that represented greater body sway in

Postural adaptations within normalized stability between older adults with and without chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Adaptations of dynamic balance performance are related to sway excursions in older adults with chronic low back pain (LBP). However, there is a lack of understanding on postural control within different thresholds of radius from the center of pressure (COP). PURPOSE: This study was conducted to compare the normalized stability based on the time-in-boundary (TIB) during repeated unilateral limb standing trials between subjects with and without chronic LBP. METHODS: There were 26 older adults with LBP and 39 control subjects who completed three trials of repeated unilateral limb st

Methodology to measure seat belt fit in relation to skeletal geometry using an upright open MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Poor seat belt fit can result in submarining behavior and injuries to the lower extremity and abdomen. While previous studies have explored seat belt fit relative to skeletal landmarks using palpation, medical imaging remains the gold standard for visualizing and locating skeletal landmarks and soft tissues. The goal of this study was to create a method to image automotive postures and seat belt fit from the pelvis to the clavicle using an Upright Open MRI. METHODS: The posture and belt fit of 10 volunteers (5M, 5F) were measured in an Acura TLX in each subject's preferred driving

Gravity center estimation for evaluation of standing whole body compensation using virtual barycentremetry based on biplanar slot-scanning stereoradiography - validation by simultaneous force plate measurement.

BACKGROUND: Whole body standing alignment (WBSA) in terms of biomechanics can be evaluated accurately only by referring the gravity line (GL) which lies on the gravity center (GC). Here, we introduce a method for estimating GL and simultaneous WBSA measurement using the EOS® imaging system and report on the reproducibility and reliability of the method. METHODS: A 3-dimensional (3D) avatar to estimate GC was created following three steps: 3D reconstruction of the bone based on EOS images; deformation into a generic morphotype (MakeHuman statistical model) before density integration with 3D ra

Quantification of the in vivo stiffness and natural length of the human plantar aponeurosis during quiet standing using ultrasound elastography.

This study aimed to identify the stiffness and natural length of the human plantar aponeurosis (PA) during quiet standing using ultrasound shear wave elastography. The shear wave velocity (SWV) of the PA in young healthy males and females (10 participants each) was measured by placing a probe in a hole in the floor plate. The change in the SWV with the passive dorsiflexion of the metatarsophalangeal (MP) joint was measured. The Young's modulus of the PA was estimated to be 64.7 ± 9.4 kPa, which exponentially increased with MP joint dorsiflexion. The PA was estimated to have the natural length

Determining the validity and reliability of spinopelvic parameters through comparing standing whole spinal radiographs and upright computed tomography images.

BACKGROUND: Standing whole spinal radiographs are used to evaluate spinal alignment in adult spinal deformity (ASD), yet some studies have reported that pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, and thoracic kyphosis (TK) intra- and inter-observer reliability is low. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of spinopelvic parameters through comparing standing whole spinal radiographs and upright CT images. METHODS: We enrolled 26 patients with ASD. All standing whole spinal posterior/anterior and lateral radiographs and upright whole spinal CT had been obtained in a natural standing position. Two exami

A Transmission-Line-Based Cochlear Standing Wave Model To Elucidate Mechanism of Human Auditory System.

How do people hear sounds? As a counterpart of Prof. G. V. Békésy's traveling wave theory, we have proposed resonance theory of outer hair cells and cochlear standing wave theory, respectively. Based on these proposals, this paper develops a transmission-line-based cochlear standing wave model. Since the macroscopic cochlear model is designed as it looks like, various auditory physiology can be explained. Transient analyses with pure-tone excitation and Gaussian pulse excitation are carried out, and Prof. D. Kemp's otoacoustic emission (OAE) is demonstrated successfully.Clinical relevance-Our

Power Absorbed by the Standing Human Body During Whole-Body Vibration Training.

Absorbed power (AP) is a biodynamic response that is directly related to the magnitude and duration of vibration. No work has previously investigated the power absorbed by the standing human body during the exposure to vibration training conditions or otherwise. This article reports the power absorbed by the standing human body under whole-body vibration (WBV) training conditions. In this work, the force and acceleration used to calculate the apparent mass by Nawayseh and Hamdan (2019, "Apparent Mass of the Standing Human Body When Using a Whole-Body Vibration Training Machine: Effect of Knee
