Trends in the placement of posterior composites in dental schools.

The aim of this paper is to review trends in the teaching of posterior composites in the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom over the last fifteen years. The authors compared the results of surveys of the teaching of posterior composites performed in 1989, 1997, and 2004-05. Historical and contemporary international trends were investigated. The amount of clinical and didactic teaching of posterior composites has increased over the past fifteen years. From a time over fifteen years ago, when very few dental students placed posterior composites in dental school, approximately

Tuberculosis risk in the hospital dental practice.

Tuberculosis has re-emerged as a serious public health concern. Multidrug-resistant strains and an increase in the number of high-risk groups are posing a difficult problem for health care providers. The risk of TB transmission in hospital dental practices is potentially increasing. A 20-question survey was mailed to the membership of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, addressing various issues relating to tuberculosis. One hundred thirty-two surveys were analyzed. Twelve per cent of respondents reported at least one TB skin test conversion by a dental provider within the past year

Collaboration Between Endocrinologists and Dentists in the Care of Patients with Acromegaly-A Narrative Review.

Acromegaly is caused by an excessive secretion of growth hormone and the secondary elevation of IGF-1 levels, leading to progressive changes in multiple body systems, including the craniofacial region and oral cavity. Dental manifestations such as mandibular overgrowth, macroglossia, malocclusion, periodontal disease, and prosthetic difficulties represent not only a clinical component of the disease but also a significant therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge on the relationship between acromegaly and oral health and to analyz

Dentistry for patients with haemophilia: Trialling a safe and economical change in management.

INTRODUCTION: While the dental management of patients with haemophilia has changed considerably in the last decade, haemophiliacs in Western Australia have continued to receive pre-operative factor support for dentistry regardless of the type of dental procedure. AIM: To review the efficacy and safety of established dental protocols that reduce factor use in the dental management of patients with haemophilia and to estimate cost savings. METHODS: Records of 11 patients with haemophilia that were seen in the pilot programme period were reviewed. These were cross-referenced with previous denta

Irreversible pulpitis in mature permanent teeth: a cost-effectiveness analysis of pulpotomy versus root canal treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based dentistry suggests pulpotomy as a potential alternative to root canal treatment in mature permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis. However, the evidence surrounding the cost-valuation and cost-efficacy of this treatment modality is not yet established. In this context, we adopted an economic modeling approach to assess the cost-effectiveness of pulpotomy versus root canal treatment, as this could aid in effective clinical decision-making. METHODS: A Markov model was constructed following a mature permanent tooth with irreversible pulpitis in an 18-year-old pati

Periodontal-systemic disease education in U.S. and Canadian dental schools.

Research has proliferated in recent years regarding the relationship of oral disease to systemic conditions. Specifically, periodontal disease has been studied as a potential risk factor for multiple conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) and adverse pregnancy outcomes, while other research focuses on exposures or behaviors associated with oral disease. However, few articles have been published reporting how this information is integrated into schools of dentistry, both in the classroom and clinical curriculum. For our study, a thirty-three-item survey and cover letter were electronic

Assessing the readiness of dental electronic health records for machine learning prediction of procedure outcomes: Insights from the bigmouth repository on composite and amalgam restoration survival rates.

OBJECTIVE: Dental electronic health records (EHRs) often lack comprehensive data for evaluating procedure outcomes. Machine learning (ML) enables predictive modeling but its applicability to dental EHR data remains unclear. This study assessed the readiness of dental EHRs for predicting restoration failure using classical and ML models. METHODS: Data from the BigMouth Dental Data Repository was analyzed, focusing on posterior restorations in permanent molars of vital teeth. Failure was defined as root canal treatment or extraction within five years. Predictors included restoration type, carie

Occlusal Trauma Induces Neuroimmune Crosstalk for a Pain State.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder caused by occlusal trauma is one of the most controversial topics in dentistry. Experimental traumatic occlusion (ETO) induced by metal crowns cemented to mandibular first molars in rats causes a long-lasting nociceptive response. This study aimed to elucidate whether ETO generates an increase in inflammatory mediators in the TMJ. In addition, the impact of ETO on trigeminal ganglia, neurotransmitter release, and satellite glial cell (SGC) activation was investigated. ELISA revealed enhanced inflammatory mediators, including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, CX3CL1, an
