The aim of the present work is to propose an approach to the biomechanical analysis of oesophagus by defining an appropriate constitutive model and the associated constitutive parameters. The configuration of the different tissues and layers that compose the oesophagus shows very complicated internal anatomy, geometry and mechanical properties. The coupling of these tissues adds to the complexity. The constitutive models must be capable of interpreting the highly non-linear mechanical response. This is done adopting a specific hyperelastic anisotropic formulation. Experimental data are essenti

One major challenge in neuroscience is the identification of interrelations between signals reflecting neural activity. When applying multivariate time series analysis techniques to neural signals, detection of directed relationships, which can be described in terms of Granger-causality, is of particular interest. Partial directed coherence has been introduced for a frequency domain analysis of linear Granger-causality based on modeling the underlying dynamics by vector autoregressive processes. We discuss the statistical properties of estimates for partial directed coherence and propose a sig

Carbon tetrachloride is a degreasing agent that was used at the Rocky Flats Plant (RFP) in Colorado to clean product components and equipment. The chemical is considered a volatile organic compound and a probable human carcinogen. During the time the plant operated (1953-1989), most of the carbon tetrachloride was released to the atmosphere through building exhaust ducts. A smaller amount was released to the air via evaporation from open-air burn pits and ground-surface discharge points. Airborne releases from the plant were conservatively estimated to be equivalent to the amount of carbon tet

Microbial community coalescence (MCC), the mixing of distinct microbiomes, is increasingly recognized as an important process in natural and managed microbial systems. However, how MCC reorganizes species association architecture and whether this restructuring alters community stability remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated how MCC modifies microbial co-occurrence networks and whether resulting architectures deviate from expectations based on stochastic reshuffling or direct compositional mixing of donor communities. Using controlled soil microcosms, we manipulated pairwise coalescen

Single cells confined by the extracellular matrix can exhibit rotational motion, yet the physical mechanisms underlying its onset and persistence remain unclear. Here, we address this gap with a cellular phase field model that couples cell deformation, cell polarization governed by stochastic excitable dynamics, and confinement. We identify the confinement strength as a bifurcation parameter determining three regimes: Strong confinement prevents rotation through spatial constraints, intermediate confinement induces stochastic transitions between rotating and nonrotating states, and weak confin

Small reservoirs are critical for rural water security, yet their life-cycle carbon emissions remain poorly quantified due to extreme data scarcity and non-linear emission dynamics. Conventional Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) often rely on static assumptions, failing to capture complex multi-variable interactions. To overcome this, we propose an integrated stochastic framework coupling Environmentally Extended Input-Output LCA (EI-LCA) with Monte Carlo simulations, Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP). Applied to the Huxingdi Reservoir in China, the frame

Tumor evolution in pediatric leukemia is shaped by stochastic fluctuations and constraints imposed by developmental programs and therapeutic pressure. However, quantitative characterization of these dynamics remains challenging because of sparse longitudinal sampling and measurement noise in clinical data. In this study, we applied Bayesian calibration of stochastic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) models to characterize patient-specific tumor evolution trajectories in pediatric leukemia. Using a longitudinal cohort of KMT2A-rearranged leukemias (52 patients, 311 longitudinal observations corresponding

Despite intensive malaria control efforts, the lowlands of western Kenya continue to experience high malaria transmission. Spatial and temporal variations in climatic factors, interventions, parasite dispersal, and human travel, influence malaria incidence in moderate-to-high transmission areas. Additionally, population movement facilitates the importation of parasites from endemic to non-endemic areas, sustaining infections where local transmission would otherwise be unsustainable. The aim of this work was to develop a process-based stochastic metapopulation transmission model that accounts f

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a widespread infection responsible for painful blisters and ulcers. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 519.5 million people aged 15-49 years (13.3%) worldwide are infected with herpes simplex virus type II (HSV-II), the primary cause of genital herpes. In this study, we develop a nonlinear stochastic fractional delay differential equation (SFDDE) model to describe the transmission dynamics of HSV-II in a human population. The population is divided into susceptible [Formula: see text], exposed [Formula: see text], asymptomatic [Formula: see t

Recently, it was proposed that a processing principle called adaptive stochastic resonance plays a major role in the auditory system, and serves to maintain optimal sensitivity even to highly variable sound pressure levels. As a side effect, in case of reduced auditory input, such as permanent hearing loss or frequency specific deprivation, this mechanism may eventually lead to the perception of phantom sounds like tinnitus or the Zwicker tone illusion. Using computational modeling, the biological plausibility of this processing principle was already demonstrated. Here, we provide experimental

Sand flies are responsible for the transmission of leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease claiming more than 50,000 lives annually. Leishmaniasis is an emerging health risk in tropical and Mediterranean countries as well as temperate regions in North America and Europe. There is an increasing demand for predicting population dynamics and spreading of sand flies to support management and control, yet phenotypic diversity and complex environmental dependence hamper model development. Here, we present the principles for developing predictive species-specific population dynamics models for im

In this paper we study an SLIR epidemic model with nonmonotonic incidence rate, which describes the psychological effect of certain serious diseases on the community when the number of infectives is getting larger. By carrying out a global analysis of the model and studying the stability of the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium, we show that either the number of infective individuals tends to zero or the disease persists as time evolves. For the stochastic model, we prove the existence, uniqueness and positivity of the solution of the model. Then, we investigate the stabilit

Bubonic plague has caused three deadly pandemics in human history: from the mid-sixth to mid-eighth century, from the mid-fourteenth to the mid-eighteenth century and from the end of the nineteenth until the mid-twentieth century. Between the second and the third pandemics, plague was causing sporadic outbreaks in only a few countries in the Middle East, including Egypt. Little is known about this historical phase of plague, even though it represents the temporal, geographical and phylogenetic transition between the second and third pandemics. Here we analysed in detail an outbreak of plague t

Increased levels of testosterone (T2 ), dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (E2 ) in children may be responsible for their early/delayed puberty and obesity conditions. Therefore, multimode sensors based on carbon matrices, such as graphite, graphene, fullerene C60 and multiwall carbon nanotubes modified with maltodextrin, were designed to assess reliably T2 , DHT and E2 in children saliva. The modes used for the assay of hormones were stochastic mode (for qualitative and quantitative determination of hormones) and differential pulse voltammetry mode (for quantitative determination of horm

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic vector-borne disease causing abortion storms in cattle and human epidemics in Africa. Our aim was to evaluate RVF persistence in a seasonal and isolated population and to apply it to Mayotte Island (Indian Ocean), where the virus was still silently circulating four years after its last known introduction in 2007. We proposed a stochastic model to estimate RVF persistence over several years and under four seasonal patterns of vector abundance. Firstly, the model predicted a wide range of virus spread patterns, from obligate persistence in a constant or trop

Modeling plays a major role in policy making, especially for infectious disease interventions but such models can be complex and computationally intensive. A more systematic exploration is needed to gain a thorough systems understanding. We present an active learning approach based on machine learning techniques as iterative surrogate modeling and model-guided experimentation to systematically analyze both common and edge manifestations of complex model runs. Symbolic regression is used for nonlinear response surface modeling with automatic feature selection. First, we illustrate our approach

The Authors present a new methodological approach in stochastic regime to determine the actual costs of an healthcare process. The paper specifically shows the application of the methodology for the determination of the cost of an Assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment in Italy. The reason of this research comes from the fact that deterministic regime is inadequate to implement an accurate estimate of the cost of this particular treatment. In fact the durations of the different activities involved are unfixed and described by means of frequency distributions. Hence the need to determ

Obtaining optimal power flow solution is a strenuous task for any power system engineer. The inclusion of FACTS devices in the power system network adds to its complexity. The dual objective of OPF with fuel cost minimization along with FACTS device location for IEEE 30 bus is considered and solved using proposed Enhanced Bacterial Foraging algorithm (EBFA). The conventional Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (BFA) has the difficulty of optimal parameter selection. Hence, in this paper, BFA is enhanced by including Nelder-Mead (NM) algorithm for better performance. A MATLAB code for EBFA is develope

A stochastic model is proposed to explain one possible underlying mechanism of the postantibiotic effect (PAE). This phenomenon, of continued inhibition of bacterial growth after removal of the antibiotic drug, is of high relevance in the context of optimizing dosing regimens. One clinical implication of long PAE lies in the possibility of increasing intervals between drug administrations. The model describes the dynamics of synthesis, saturation and removal of penicillin binding proteins (PBPs). High fractions of saturated PBPs are in the model associated with a lower growth capacity of bacte

Spatial heterogeneity and host demography have a direct impact on the persistence or extinction of a disease. Natural or human-made landscape features such as forests, rivers, roads, and crops are important to the persistence of wildlife diseases. Rabies, hantaviruses, and plague are just a few examples of wildlife diseases where spatial patterns of infection have been observed. We formulate multi-patch deterministic and stochastic epidemic models and use these models to investigate problems related to disease persistence and extinction. We show in some special cases that a unique disease-free
