Immediate Effects of the Vocal Function Exercises Semi-Occluded Mouth Posture on Glottal Airflow Parameters: A Preliminary Study.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to quantify immediate alterations in the airflow glottogram between the Vocal Function Exercises semi-occluded mouth posture (/ol/ with lip buzz) and the sustained vowel /o/ in individuals with normal voices, and to determine if noted changes were in agreement with established semi-occluded vocal tract aerodynamic theory. Based on semi-occluded vocal tract aerodynamic theory, we hypothesized the following immediate changes in the flow glottogram during the /ol-buzz/ condition: a greater open quotient, a greater skewing quotient, a greater maximum flow declination ra

Assessment of effectiveness of acoustic analysis of voice for monitoring the evolution of vocal nodules after vocal treatment.

In the present study, we report the results of acoustic analysis of voice in 97 patients diagnosed with vocal nodules before and after the vocal logopedic treatment, to evaluate its effectiveness in monitoring the evolution. We analyzed five parameters: the mean fundamental frequency (F0) and its standard deviation, jitter, shimmer, and normalized noise energy (NNE). Our results indicate that most patients showed a reduction of fundamental frequency, an increase of perturbation (jitter and shimmer), and an increase of NNE before the treatment. We did not find any statistically significant rela

Using electroglottographic real-time feedback to control posterior glottal adduction during phonation.

The goal of this pilot study was to determine whether the ability to change the degree of posterior glottal adduction (PGA) during phonation can be acquired more easily with the aid of electroglottographic (EGG) real-time feedback. The subject was a 37-year-old untrained female with habitually breathy voice. Before the experiment, she participated in one voice coaching session where exercises for increasing PGA were explained and executed. During the experiment, phonation has been monitored simultaneously with videostroboscopy, electroglottography, and audio recording. While phonating, the sub

Strobophotoglottographic transillumination as a method for the analysis of vocal fold vibration patterns.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if laryngeal transillumination in combination with stroboscopy (strobophotoglottography; SPGG) is useful for (1) the visualization of vocal fold vibration (VFV) opening patterns, (2) the localization of initial vocal fold opening in horizontal glottal thirds (anterior, midmembranous, and posterior), (3) determination of the temporal correspondence of the so-called electroglottography (EGG)-knee and initial vocal fold separation, and, finally, (4) automatized quantitative measurements of glottal area function within endoscopic images. Correcting vocal fold immobility by autologous collagen injection for voice rehabilitation. A short-term study.

We report on a short-term clinical study of injectable autologous collagen (Vocalogen) used to correct dysphonias arising from vocal fold immobility. The collagen is extracted from skin taken from the lower abdominal quadrant area or from just above the bikini line. About 30 cm2 of skin are required to provide 2 mL of injectable collagen. The histologic examination of the preparation before injection disclosed the presence of elastin fibers and some clusters of epithelial cells, beside the collagen fibers. The collagen is naturally reticulated, and the molecule is preserved in its entirety. Th

Sulcus Vocalis: Results of Excision Without Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Sulcus is an epithelial invagination of the membranous vocal fold. Its phonatory effects are usually attributed to fibrosis, thinning, and/or the absence of the superficial lamina propria (SLP). Surgical treatment is typically focused on reconstruction of the SLP. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of excision without SLP reconstruction or replacement. METHODS: Records of patients who underwent surgical treatment of sulcus vocalis (Ford type 3) by excision without reconstruction were reviewed for demographic and historical information. Pre- and postoperative strobos

Age- and gender-related difference of vocal fold vibration and glottal configuration in normal speakers: analysis with glottal area waveform.

INTRODUCTION: Glottal area waveform (GAW) analysis is widely used in the assessment of vocal fold vibration by high-speed digital imaging (HSDI). Because normative GAW data obtained from a large number of subjects have not been reported, we conducted a prospective study to obtain normative results for GAW analysis of HSDI findings and clarify normal variations associated with gender and age. METHODS: Vocally healthy adults were divided into a young group (aged ≤ 35 years) and an elderly group (aged ≥ 65 years). The configuration and size of the glottal area were assessed at different phases o

Efficacy of Fiberoptic Laryngeal Surgery in Benign VocalCord Lesions in Comparision with Microlaryngeal Surgery.

The use of operating microscope and rigid telescope in laryngeal surgery represents one of the most exciting advances. Both systems provide good illumination, magnification and relative ease of operation. Microlaryngeal surgery (MLS) with suspension laryngoscope is currently considered the gold standard for surgical approach to the larynx for excision of benign lesions of vocal folds. The limitation of this technique is intubation, general anesthesia (GA) related and in difficult exposure of larynx. The development of ideal anesthetic system has not been successful in satisfying both the surge
