BACKGROUND: The superficial temporal fascia merits its popularity in reconstructive surgery for its large number of clinical applications. In this report, the authors present their experience with different uses of the superficial temporal fascial flap in facial reanimation.
METHODS: Seventeen cases are presented. In 10 patients, the fascial flap provided a vascularized lining at the interface between the free muscle flap for smile restoration and the overlying skin. In six cases, it was utilized to correct small or moderate contour deficits in the paretic hemiface, using either the fascial f

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review article different relevant applications of botulinum toxin type A are demonstrated in patients with head and neck cancer.
RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with head and neck cancers of different etiologies often suffer from disorders concerning their musculature (for example, synkinesis in mimic muscles) or gland secretion in the head and neck region. This leads to many problems and reduces their quality of life. The application of botulinum toxin type A can improve movement disorders like synkinesis following reconstructive surgery in patients with cancers of the p

RATIONALE: Gustatory otorrhea can lead to cutaneous changes, recurrent infection, and social disruption. We present a case of a late, evolving sialocutaneous fistula to the external auditory canal, managed surgically after failing conservative therapies. This case is unique by late evolution, whereby the symptoms presented with significance 27 years after her operation and 19 years after mild symptoms initially arose.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Gustatory, left-sided clear otorrhea with acutely increased volume over 8 months causing social disruption.
DIAGNOSES: Sialocutaneous fistula to the external

During the 20 years from 1977 to 1996, 633 cases underwent excisions of parotid tumors (539 benign and 94 malignant) in the department of Otolaryngology of Kansai Medical University. The incidence of Warthin's tumors in the years from (1987 to 1996) was higher than that in the years from 1977 to 1986. On the other hand, the incidence of mucoepidermoid carcinomas was less than in previous reports. Tumors accompanied with spontaneous pain or facial nerve palsy and with invasion to both lobes frequently indicated malignancy. Facial nerve palsy caused by either benign or malignant tumors before op

Adequate tumor resection and preservation of facial nerve function are the primary goals of the parotidectomy. However, this technique may lead to undesirable effects, including a concave facial effect, Frey syndrome, and prominent scar. The aim of this study is evaluate the outcomes of facial symmetry and symptomatic Frey syndrome in patients having dermofat graft during superficial parotidectomy. The incidence of symptomatic Frey syndrome was lower in patients who received dermofat graft and so was the facial asymmetry rate, but these differences were not statistically significant.

PURPOSE: Lipomatous lesions of the parotid gland are rare and seldom considered in the initial diagnosis of a parotid mass. We report our experience in the management of patients with lipomatous lesions affecting the parotid gland.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all parotidectomies performed for neoplastic lesions in the maxillofacial unit between 1975 and 2003 and patients with lipomatous lesions involving the parotid gland were identified; 638 parotidectomies were performed in this period on 629 patients in which 660 neoplasms were identified. Eight patients were found to h

Tumors of the parotid gland are uncommon. We performed a retrospective study to analyze the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic features of a group of patients. We reviewed the clinical and the surgical records of a series of 109 patients who were recommended for surgery because of parotid tumors by the Plastic and Reconstructive Service of São João Hospital, Portugal, between 1990 and 2002. The following parameters were evaluated: age, sex, gland afflicted, symptoms, and duration of symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatment methods, follow-up, and recurrences. Pleomorphic adenoma was the m

PURPOSE: This study analyzes facial and trigeminal nerver function after arthroscopic surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-one consecutive patients (81 joints) who underwent unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopic surgery were assessed postoperatively for facial and trigeminal nerve function.
RESULTS: Twenty-four of 81 patients (29.6%) had some degree of sensory or motor nerve dysfunction. Two patients (2.5%) showed signs of facial nerve dysfunction, which completely resolved in one patient in 11 weeks, but persisted mildly in the other at the 1-year follow-up examination.

Postoperative complications present in many forms and can cause great morbidity and even mortality in patients who experience them. Frey syndrome is an example of a postoperative complication in which aberrant nerve regeneration following parotidectomy leads to hyperhidrosis induced by gustatory stimuli. We present a unique but similar case of aberrant nerve regeneration and resulting hypersecretion that emerged 6-7 months following perineoplasty and labial reduction for lichen sclerosus in a 53-year-old woman. An exhaustive investigation ruled out genitourinary causes of her symptoms. Pads, t
