Comparing rapid molecular and culture methods for detecting fungal contamination in healthcare environments.

BACKGROUND: Fungal contamination of healthcare environments is increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to healthcare-associated infections, yet standardized environmental surveillance strategies remain poorly defined. Culture-based methods are widely used but have limitations including low sensitivity and prolonged turnaround time. Molecular approaches such as quantitative PCR (qPCR) may improve detection but have not been extensively evaluated in real-world hospital environments. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal observational study across three inpatient units at a tertiary ac

Regulating microbial dynamics by wood-derived tannic acids addition to mitigate gaseous emissions during liquid chicken manure storage.

Gaseous emissions (i.e., CO2, CH4, NH3, N2O) pose significant environmental pollutions during manure storage. Plant-derived tannins exhibit properties conducive to microbial modulation through protein-binding and metabolic pathway inhibition, offering potential for mitigating these emissions. This study evaluated wood-derived tannic acids as sustainable microbial modulators for the synergistic mitigation of NH3 and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions during liquid chicken manure storage. Four treatments were established: CK (control, no additive), CT (0.5 % condensed tannin), HT (0.5 % hydrolyza

The Integrated Effect of Microbial Inoculants and Biochar Types on Soil Biological Properties, and Plant Growth of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.).

Numerous reports confirm the positive effect of biochar application on soil properties and plant development. However, the interaction between root-associated beneficial microbes and different types of biochar is not well understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the plant growth of lettuce after the application of three types of biochar in loamy, sandy soil individually and in combination with plant-beneficial microbes. Furthermore, total microbial activity in rhizosphere soil of lettuce was measured by means of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolase and enzyme activities linked

Clinical, genetic and immunological characteristics of 40 Chinese patients with CD40 ligand deficiency.

CD40 ligand (CD40L) deficiency is a rare but life-threatening primary immunodeficiency caused by mutations in the CD40L gene. Here, we investigated a cohort of 40 genetically diagnosed CD40L-deficient patients from the Chinese mainland, analysed their clinical and genetic data, and examined CD40L expression, the proportion of T cell subsets, B cell subsets and T follicular helper (Tfh) cells. The aim was to provide a complete picture of CD40L deficiency. Initial presentations of the patient cohort mainly involved recurrent fever (47.5%) and sinopulmonary infection (42.5%). Life-threatening inf

Integrating metagenomic next-generation sequencing into a multimodal diagnostic framework for spinal infection: enhancing etiological identification and clinical prediction.

BACKGROUND: Spinal infection (SI) remains diagnostically challenging because of heterogeneous etiologies, nonspecific clinical manifestations, and the limited sensitivity of conventional microbiological approaches, particularly following empirical antimicrobial exposure. Although metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) enables unbiased pathogen detection, its incremental clinical value beyond pathogen identification and its role within integrated diagnostic strategies remain incompletely established. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 208 consecutive patients with suspected SI between
