Can gait analysis identify relapse in children with congenital talipes equinovarus? A systematic review & meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a common congenital condition. Following initial treatment patients can relapse, requiring further intervention. Gait analysis evaluates kinematics throughout gait, which have been demonstrated to differ between CTEV children and typically developing children. However, it is unclear whether there is a difference in kinematic parameters between those with CTEV who relapse and those who do not. We therefore aimed to synthesise current evidence to answer this question and to determine whether gait analysis could play a role in relapse monitorin

Effectiveness of modified ankle foot orthosis of low-temperature thermoplastics in idiopathic congenital talipes equino varus.

The aim of this study was to study the effectiveness of modified ankle foot orthosis fabricated from low-temperature thermoplastics, as an alternative orthosis for the maintenance of correction in idiopathic congenital talipes equino varus (CTEV) deformity. The study was conducted in infants after the completion of the Ponseti serial manipulation and cast treatment, with or without, percutaneous Achilles tenotomy. Both male and female infants with unilateral or bilateral CTEV deformity were included in our study. A custom-made modified ankle foot orthosis was fabricated on the day of the remov

Novel report on congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) following olanzapine exposure during pregnancy: case report and short review.

Olanzapine is widely used during pregnancy to manage mood and psychotic disorders with overall beneficial effects. There have been past reports of olanzapine exposure during early pregnancy and clubfoot in two newborns from India and Israel. We report a woman in Nepal diagnosed with schizophrenia and treated with olanzapine throughout the pregnancy delivering a baby boy with congenital talipes equinovarus deformity. Like in many other low-income settings, pregnancy was unplanned, and pre-conception counselling was not done. Research in mice has revealed the negative effects of olanzapine on bo

Treatment of syndrome-associated congenital talipes equinovarus using the Ponseti method: 4-12 years of follow-up.

to evaluate the effectiveness of the Ponseti method in treating syndrome-associated (nonidiopathic) congenital talipes equinovarus. This was a retrospective consecutive review over a 12-year period in a tertiary centre of all patients with syndrome-associated talipes equinovarus treated with the Ponseti method. The primary outcome measure at the final follow-up was the functional correction of the deformity. There were 16 (28 feet) children, with an average follow-up of 7 years (range: 4-12). The average age at presentation was 6.1 (range: 2-17) weeks. Deformities were severe, with an average

A thorough analysis of data on the correlation between COL9A1 polymorphisms and the susceptibility to congenital talipes equinovarus: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a prevalent pediatric deformity with a multifactorial etiology. The objective of this meta-analysis was to explore the association between genetic variations in COL9A1 and the susceptibility to CTEV. METHODS: A comprehensive analysis of pertinent literature released before November 15, 2023, in electronic bibliographic databases was carried out. The importance of the connection was clarified through odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), utilizing random or fixed-effects models depending on study heterogeneity. Statistical a

A Prospective Study on Functional Outcomes of Serial Cast Correction in Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) by Ponseti Method.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), often known as clubfoot, is one of the most common congenital deformities of the foot and ankle, affecting one in every 1,000 live births. The deformity has four components: ankle equinus, hindfoot varus, forefoot adductus, and midfoot cavus. The Ponseti casting technique of CTEV management has proven to be more effective, generating higher positive outcomes and lesser complications than conventional surgical methods. METHODS: This study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital centre in southern Rajasthan, India. Twenty cases wit

Establishment of a control induced pluripotent stem cell line SMBCi018-A from a patient with congenital talipes equinovarus.

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a congenital malformation affecting approximately 1/700-1/1000 of live borns. To date extensive epidemiological and biological studies have been operated to solve this issue, the most meaningful findings in clubfoot genetics involve PITX1 variants, which were associated with clubfoot phenotype in mice and humans. According to recent studies, the PITX1-TBX4 transcriptional pathway regulatory for early limb development has identified a key developmental pathway in clubfoot etiology by the common disease-rare hypothesis. However, the precise mechanisms cau

Ponseti Technique for the Management of Congenital Talipes Equinovarus in a Rural Set-Up in India: Experience of 356 Patients.

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), also known as clubfoot, is a complex congenital deformity of the foot that, left untreated, can limit a person's mobility by making it difficult and painful to walk. Worldwide, 80% of children born with clubfoot are in low- and middle-income countries. The management of clubfoot has a long history. Non-operative management did not become popular, as an increasing number of orthopaedists started leaning towards surgical treatment. The late Dr. Ignacio Ponseti developed a method of clubfoot correction that successfully realigns clubfoot in infants without e

Birth prevalence of congenital talipes equinovarus in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot, is a structural malformation that develops early in gestation. Birth prevalence of clubfoot is reported to vary both between and within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and this information is needed to plan treatment services. This systematic review aimed to understand the birth prevalence of clubfoot in LMIC settings. METHODS: Six databases were searched for studies that reported birth prevalence of clubfoot in LMICs. Results were screened and assessed for eligibility using pre-defined criteria. Data on birth prevalence

Plantar pressures in children with congenital talipes equino varus--a comparison between surgical management and the Ponseti technique.

The Ponseti technique for treatment for Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) was introduced in the authors' institution in 2001, substituting a more traditional orthopaedic approach which involved surgery. There is currently limited published information regarding the differences in clinical outcomes between these two techniques, particularly in relation to plantar pressure analysis. This study aims to determine differences in pedobarographic outcome in children with CTEV, treated with either a surgical or Ponseti approach. A high resolution pedobarograph was used to record plantar pressure d

[Surgical management of talipes equinovarus as sequelae of a compartment and/or postischemic syndrome of the deep flexor compartment of the lower leg].

Cases of posttraumatic pes equinovarus after compartment syndrome have become more frequent in the last 3 decades because limb-saving procedures like compartment splitting, vascular repair, and microvascular free flaps have become well established in trauma surgery, thus reducing early below knee amputations. But if the deep flexor compartment is not split completely or if the muscles are crushed by direct trauma severe necrosis and subsequent muscle contractures result in a very severe clubfoot deformity. Metatarsalgia of fifth, fourth, and third metatarsal head even in well-fitted orthopaedi

Early results of a physiotherapist-delivered Ponseti service for the management of idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus foot deformity.

We studied 24 children (40 feet) to demonstrate that a physiotherapist-delivered Ponseti service is as successful as a medically-led programme in obtaining correction of an idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus deformity. The median Pirani score at the start of treatment was 5.5 (mean 4.75; 2 to 6). A Pirani score of > or =5 predicted the need for tenotomy (p < 0.01). Of the 40 feet studied, 39 (97.5%) achieved correction of deformity. The remaining foot required surgical correction. A total of 25 (62.5%) of the feet underwent an Achilles tenotomy, which was performed by a surgeon in the p
