The representation of information about faces in the temporal and frontal lobes.

Neurophysiological evidence is described showing that some neurons in the macaque inferior temporal visual cortex have responses that are invariant with respect to the position, size and view of faces and objects, and that these neurons show rapid processing and rapid learning. Which face or object is present is encoded using a distributed representation in which each neuron conveys independent information in its firing rate, with little information evident in the relative time of firing of different neurons. This ensemble encoding has the advantages of maximising the information in the repres

Functional disconnectivity of the medial temporal lobe in Asperger's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions that may be caused by abnormal connectivity between brain regions constituting neurocognitive networks for specific aspects of social cognition. METHODS: We used three-way multidimensional scaling of regionally parcellated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data to explore the hypothesis of abnormal functional connectivity in people with ASD. Thirteen high-functioning individuals with Asperger's syndrome and 13 healthy volunteers were scanned during incidental processing of fearful facial expressions. R

Influence of epilepsy and temporal lobe resection on olfactory function.

Olfactory auras accompany some cases of epilepsy. Several aspects of olfactory function, including sensitivity, also may be altered. We reviewed the literature on these topics, as well as studies evaluating the influences of temporal lobe resection and other seizure management procedures on olfactory function. We concluded that: (a) despite several studies, the prevalence of olfactory auras in epilepsy is unknown, with estimates ranging from < 1% to > 30%; (b) epilepsy appears to cause a generalized decrease in olfactory functioning, although increased sensitivity may occur in some epileptic p

Neuroticism in temporal lobe epilepsy is associated with altered limbic-frontal lobe resting-state functional connectivity.

Neuroticism, a core personality trait characterized by a tendency towards experiencing negative affect, has been reported to be higher in people with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) compared with healthy individuals. Neuroticism is a known predictor of depression and anxiety, which also occur more frequently in people with TLE. The purpose of this study was to identify abnormalities in whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity in relation to neuroticism in people with TLE and to determine the degree of unique versus shared patterns of abnormal connectivity in relation to elevated symptoms

A comparison of post-ictal headache between patients with occipital lobe epilepsy and temporal lobe epilepsy.

We investigated post-ictal headaches (PIH) using a questionnaire to ascertain their characteristics and compare them among different types of epilepsy. The subjects consisted of 34 patients with occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) and 75 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). PIH occurred in 62% of OLE and 23% of TLE (P < 0.05). The quality of pain in PIH was 'steady' in 71% of OLE and 29% of TLE (P < 0.05) as opposed to 'pounding'. Other factors, such as frequency, severity, duration, and accompanying symptoms showed no significant differences. We found very few patients with migraine-like hea

The Role of GABA and Its Receptors in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common and severe form of focal epilepsy. This review examines the diverse mechanisms by which the GABAergic system contributes both to seizure generation and to protective processes that limit epileptogenesis and seizure progression in TLE. We focus on findings from established animal models of TLE as well as studies of surgically resected tissue from patients who had undergone therapeutic intervention. Experimental models include sustained electrical stimulation of the perforant path, as well as the kainic acid (KA) and Li-pilocarpine models. A

Parallel encoding of speech in human frontal and temporal lobes.

Models of speech perception are centered around a hierarchy in which auditory representations in the thalamus propagate to primary auditory cortex, then to the lateral temporal cortex, and finally through lateral cortical areas to reach the frontal lobe. However, it is unclear if speech-evoked activity in frontal cortex strictly reflects downstream processing from this hierarchical pathway or whether there are long-range parallel connections from the low-level areas (thalamus, primary auditory cortex) to the frontal lobe. Here, we used high-density direct cortical recordings, high-resolution d

Encoding of Visual Objects in the Human Medial Temporal Lobe.

The human medial temporal lobe (MTL) plays a crucial role in recognizing visual objects, a key cognitive function that relies on the formation of semantic representations. Nonetheless, it remains unknown how visual information of general objects is translated into semantic representations in the MTL. Furthermore, the debate about whether the human MTL is involved in perception has endured for a long time. To address these questions, we investigated three distinct models of neural object coding-semantic coding, axis-based feature coding, and region-based feature coding-in each subregion of the

Deep learning for the diagnosis of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to enable the automatic detection of the hippocampus and diagnose mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) with the hippocampus as the epileptogenic area using artificial intelligence (AI). We compared the diagnostic accuracies of AI and neurosurgical physicians for MTLE with the hippocampus as the epileptogenic area. METHOD: In this study, we used an AI program to diagnose MTLE. The image sets were processed using a code written in Python 3.7.4. and analyzed using Open Computer Vision 4.5.1. The deep learning model, which was a fine-tuned VGG16 model, consisted of sev

Neurophysiological and neuropsychological parameters in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of localization-related epilepsy (LRE) and has been extensively studied in the field of neuropsychology due to its significant association with cognitive impairments. Cognitive decline has long been recognized as a consequence of this form of epilepsy, with previous studies primarily focusing on neurophysiological measures. In this study, both neurophysiological and neuropsychological factors were analyzed in TLE patients compared to healthy control subjects. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) t

Revisiting the Role of the Medial Temporal Lobe in Motor Learning.

Classic taxonomies of memory distinguish explicit and implicit memory systems, placing motor skills squarely in the latter branch. This assertion is in part a consequence of foundational discoveries showing significant motor learning in amnesics. Those findings suggest that declarative memory processes in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) do not contribute to motor learning. Here, we revisit this issue, testing an individual (L. S. J.) with severe MTL damage on four motor learning tasks and comparing her performance to age-matched controls. Consistent with previous findings in amnesics, we observ

Ictal paraphasia as an atypical manifestation of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Language disturbances are common manifestations of non-convulsive seizures in focal epilepsy. Ictal aphasia and speech arrest are the most representative. On the other hand, ictal paraphasia is a rare clinical manifestation of dominant temporal lobe epilepsy, with few cases reported in the literature. We describe a 73-year-old woman with focal onset unaware seizures presenting with phonemic paraphasias related to a left anterior temporal low-grade glioma. This ictal speech manifestation can be easily misdiagnosed and treated as other neurological or mental illnesses and can be considered a lat

The role of the ventrolateral anterior temporal lobes in social cognition.

A key challenge for neurobiological models of social cognition is to elucidate whether brain regions are specialised for that domain. In recent years, discussion surrounding the role of anterior temporal regions epitomises such debates; some argue the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) is part of a domain-specific network for social processing, while others claim it comprises a domain-general hub for semantic representation. In the present study, we used ATL-optimised fMRI to map the contribution of different ATL structures to a variety of paradigms frequently used to probe a crucial social ability,

Volumetric analysis of the piriform cortex in temporal lobe epilepsy.

The piriform cortex, at the confluence of the temporal and frontal lobes, generates seizures in response to chemical convulsants and electrical stimulation. Resection of more than 50% of the piriform cortex in anterior temporal lobe resection for refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) was associated with a 16-fold higher chance of seizure freedom. The objectives of the current study were to implement a robust protocol to measure piriform cortex volumes and to quantify the correlation of these volumes with clinical characteristics of TLE. Sixty individuals with unilateral TLE (33 left) and 20
