Randomised controlled trial targeting habit formation to improve medication adherence to daily oral medications in patients with gout.

INTRODUCTION: Medication adherence for patients with chronic conditions such as gout, a debilitating form of arthritis that requires daily medication to prevent flares, is a costly problem. Existing interventions to improve medication adherence have only been moderately effective. Habit formation theory is a promising strategy to improve adherence. The cue-reward-repetition principle posits that habits are formed by repeatedly completing an activity after the same cue and having the action rewarded every time. Over time, cues become increasingly important whereas rewards become less salient be

Texts for Talking: Evaluation of a Mobile Health Program Addressing Speech and Language Delay.

Speech and language delays are common developmental disorders that can lead to long-term academic and psychosocial impairments. Affected families often benefit from instruction in cultivating a language-rich home environment. This study investigated the feasibility of utilizing text messaging to deliver developmental education to families. Parents of children aged 11 to 36 months with concerning language development were enrolled in a 3-month text messaging program. Pre-program and post-program telephone surveys were completed. All enrolled parents were of low socioeconomic status, and 48% wer

Telemedicine for Family Planning: A Scoping Review.

Telemedicine has the potential to increase access to family planning. The most common application involved the use of text message reminders and mobile apps. Text messaging increased knowledge in a variety of settings, but had no effect on contraceptive uptake and use. Two randomized studies found that text messaging improved continuation of oral contraceptives and injectables. Telemedicine provision of medication abortion included both clinic-to-clinic and direct-to-patient models of care. Telemedicine provision of medication abortion has been found to be equally safe and effective as in-pers

Understanding the Influence of Substance Use, Mental Health, and Stigma on Smoking Behavior Among People Living With HIV: Rapid Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Vietnam, an upper-middle-income country, the majority of people living with HIV smoke. Vietnam has established quitline services to support this population, but they remain underused. Text messaging is widely used in Vietnam, and studies in other countries have shown that text messaging interventions can promote smoking cessation. Our goal was to conduct a formative study to inform the development of a text messaging intervention to increase access to quitline services and promote smoking cessation among people living with HIV who smoke in Vietnam. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed t

Driver performance while texting: even a little is too much.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of text messaging and other in-car behaviors on driving performance under simple and naturalistic road conditions in a driving simulator. METHODS: Data from 28 healthy individuals (12 female) are presented. Participant age ranged from 18 to 28 (mean = 21.0). Average driving experience was 3.8 years (SD = 2.5). Participants completed a baseline loop condition in which they drove normally through a realistic virtual environment. Next, participants drove an identical loop, and at 3 specified points during this drive, participants were required to (1) complete a r

Testing Optical Character Recognition of Home Blood Pressure Measurements, a Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing hypertension typically requires repeated blood pressure (BP) readings taken over multiple days, but obtaining accurate BP measurements from patients at home is known to be challenging, at least in part due to failure to accurately report those measurements. Here, we evaluate 2 low-cost electronic reporting strategies, text messaging, and a novel image-based alternative, for acceptability and accuracy. METHODS: We developed and tested a 2-stage optical character recognition (OCR) model to "read" a BP monitor display from patient-provided cellphone photographs. We then co

Comparative- and Cost-Effectiveness Research Determining the Optimal Intervention for Advancing Transgender Women With HIV to Full Viral Suppression (Text Me, Alexis!): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Many transgender women with HIV achieve suboptimal advancement through the HIV Care Continuum, including poor HIV health care usage, retention in HIV medical care, and rates of viral suppression. These issues are exacerbated by comorbid conditions, such as substance use disorder, which is also associated with reduced quality of life, increased overdose deaths, usage of high-cost health care services, engagement in a street economy, and cycles of incarceration. Thus, it is critical that efforts to End the HIV Epidemic include effective interventions to link and retain transgender wo

Longitudinal Assessment of Acute Concussion Outcomes Through SMS Text (ConText Study).

OBJECTIVE: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion, is a common health problem that has seen a recent increase in US adolescents. This study uses SMS text messaging (a mobile health [mHealth] tool) to report patient symptoms. We aim to better characterize mTBI recovery and hypothesize that this mHealth tool will have high retention rates and correlate with a conventional means of assessing symptoms, the Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory (PCSI). METHODS: A prospective observational cohort pilot study. Thirty-one pediatric patients with acute mTBI were recruited to characterize their

Finding the balance between rigour and relevance: implementing adaptations to the implementation of a pragmatic randomised controlled trial of a two-way texting intervention for voluntary medical male circumcision in South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: To document adaptations that were made to the implementation of the two-way texting (2wT) randomised controlled trial (RCT) for voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) in South Africa and to provide a nuanced discussion on the differences between adaptations and fidelity in this context. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study using the Framework for Reporting Adaptations and Modifications in Evidence-based Implementation Strategies (FRAME-IS) to examine 2wT adaptations. We reported adaptations to the 2wT intervention using two steps. First, we categorised adaptations in a sha

Digital Health in Enhancing Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is essential in determining successful treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The adoption of digital health is suggested to improve ART adherence among people living with HIV (PLHIV). This study aimed to systematically determine the effect of digital health in enhancing ART adherence among PLHIV from published studies. The systematic search was conducted on Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), PubMed, Ovid, EBSCOHost, and Google Scholar databases up to June 2022. Studies utilized any digital health as an intervention for ART adherence enhancement a

Investigating for Whom Brief Substance Use Interventions Are Most Effective: An Individual Participant Data Meta-analysis.

Prior research suggests that brief interventions (BIs) for alcohol and other drug use may vary in effectiveness across patient sociodemographic factors. The objective of this individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis was to explore for whom BIs delivered in general healthcare settings are more or less effective. We examined variability in BI effects by patient age, sex, employment, education, relationship status, and baseline severity of substance use using a two-stage IPD meta-analysis approach. All trials included in a parent aggregate data meta-analysis (k = 116) were invited to contr

The outcomes of sexting for children and adolescents: A systematic review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Given associated risks, sexting among children and adolescents has yielded significant interest in recent years. Several previous reviews have examined data on the prevalence, determinants, and correlates of sexting behaviour, however, in an ever-changing digital media context, a comprehensive overview of findings regarding its outcomes is warranted. This novel review aimed to systematically identify and conduct a narrative synthesis of empirical evidence regarding the outcomes of sexting involvement for children and adolescents. METHODS: Four databases were searched for peer-re

Two-way messaging therapy for depression and anxiety: longitudinal response trajectories.

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine is a strategy for overcoming barriers to access evidence-based psychotherapy. Digital modalities that operate outside session-based treatment formats, such as ongoing two-way messaging, may further address these challenges. However, no study to date has established suitability criteria for this medium. METHODS: A large outpatient sample (n = 10,718) engaged in daily messaging with licensed clinicians from a telemedicine provider. Patients consisted of individuals from urban and rural settings in all 50 states of the US, who signed up to the telemedicine provider. Usin
