Complications associated with the surgical removal of non-syndromic supernumerary premolar tooth buds in the mandible.

Hyperdontia involving the premolar teeth can be single or multiple or even related to a syndrome. These are frequently encountered in permanent dentition, but their occurrence has ranged between 0.09 and 0.64% in the general population. These are commonly found between the permanent canines and first premolars but rarely between the first and second premolars. These are usually eumorphic and can be easily identified as they follow the conventional tooth morphology. These are usually asymptomatic and not easily palpable unless they are very close to eruption. A lingual approach is preferred dur

Tooth development in a model reptile: functional and null generation teeth in the gecko Paroedura picta.

This paper describes tooth development in a basal squamate, Paroedura picta. Due to its reproductive strategy, mode of development and position within the reptiles, this gecko represents an excellent model organism for the study of reptile development. Here we document the dental pattern and development of non-functional (null generation) and functional generations of teeth during embryonic development. Tooth development is followed from initiation to cytodifferentiation and ankylosis, as the tooth germs develop from bud, through cap to bell stages. The fate of the single generation of non-fun

Odontoma malformation and disturbances of eruption subsequent to traumatic dental injuries: A literature review and a case report.

Due to the close proximity of the primary teeth with the developing permanent successors, several developmental alterations in the permanent successors have been reported as consequences of traumatic dental injuries to the primary dentition. When they occur at a very young age such trauma could disturb normal tooth development and cause rare anomalies, including sequestration of the permanent tooth germ and odontoma-like malformations. A literature review of case reports with a history of trauma and odontoma formation is discussed in this paper. This paper also includes a case report of a pati

Histological and immunological characteristics of the junctional epithelium.

The continuity of epithelial tissue is collapsed by tooth eruption. The junctional epithelium (JE) is attached to the tooth surface by hemidesmosomes, which constitutes the front-line defense against periodontal bacterial infection. JE constitutively expresses intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and neutrophils and lymphocytes penetrate into JE via interaction between ICAM-1 and LFA-1 expressed on the surface of these migrating cells. JE also expresses cytokines and chemokines. These functions of JE are maintained even in germ-free condition. Therefore, the constitutive expression of a

[Consideration on the treatment of transposition of the teeth].

The two cases with the transposition of the teeth were treated orthodontically. One was a case in which the teeth which had changed places with each other were aligned in irregular sequence, the other was one with the teeth which had erupted at the unusual position were repositioned in order of the tooth number. Those causes and some problems involved in diagnosis and treatment were discussed. 1. The causes of transposition of the teeth in the two cases reported herein seemed to be premature loss of primary teeth and the malposition of permanent tooth germs, respectively. 2. At the time of the

[Removal through the coronal approach of the upper wisdom teeth. Apropos of a case of bilateral migration into the temporal fossa].

This report presents a case of double migration of third maxillary molar in temporal fossa and their removal by a coronal approach. A 15 years of old boy, was seen for major trismus. 2 months before, he underwent under general anaesthesy impacted third maxillary molar removal. The radiologic examination showed that superior third molar has been pushed and left into the temporal fossa in both sides. After computed tomography examination, teeth were removed by a coronal approach. This was the only approach in order to preserve facial nerve and to allow with good chances to remove the teeth. Inte

Solitary maxillary central incisor in the midline associated with systemic disorders.

A single maxillary central incisor in the midline is a rare developmental anomaly. The appearance of a single incisor in place of two teeth may occur as an isolated dental finding that can be related to fusion of two neighboring teeth or to agenesis of a tooth germ. However, the condition has also been reported to occur in association with autosomal dominant holoprosencephaly, growth retardation, and midline developmental defects. This article reports on other systemic defects that can be found in association with a single maxillary central incisor.

Complete root resorption of an upper central incisor due to ectopic eruption of canine in a deaf-mute child.

Unilateral complete root resorption of the permanent central incisor was experienced in a boy with deaf and dumb. Transposition of tooth germ or abnormally directed eruption of the canine caused not only an entire root but a part of enamel resorption. The patient was diagnosed clinically and radiographically as an ectopic eruption of the right maxillary upper canine and then treatments were provided to improve esthetic and functional conditions in terms of eruption guidance. It should be emphasized that the early diagnosis and the subsequent eruption guidance is essential in the patient with t

Extraoral tooth eruption and transposition of teeth following trauma.

A six-year-old boy presented with extraoral eruption of a mandibular permanent canine and a loosely attached lateral incisor in the labial vestibule, 3 months following trauma to the chin. The trauma not only caused displacement of the permanent tooth buds, but also resulted in transposition of the lateral incisor and canine with subsequent ectopic eruption. The case is presented to demonstrate one of the infrequent complications of trauma involving the unerupted tooth buds of permanent teeth and its unusual clinical presentation.

Regional control by the dental follicle of alterations in alveolar bone metabolism during tooth eruption.

Tooth eruption is a localized, bilaterally symmetrical series of events which involves resorption and formation of alveolar bone on opposite sides of the tooth and requires the presence of the dental follicle. We examined the effect on eruption of selective surgical removal of parts of the follicle. Removal of either the basal or coronal halves of the follicle prevented eruption. Bone resorption and formation of an eruption pathway did not occur after removal of the coronal part of the follicle and bone formation did not occur after removal of the basal part of the follicle. Exposure and incis

An experimental study of timing and topography of early tooth development in the mouse embryo with an analysis of the role of innervation.

The putative involvement of the innervation in determining the sites of dental development was investigated by intra-ocular homografting and organ culture methods. Mandibular arches were dissected from 9 and 10-day-old (E9-E10) mouse embryos and grafted to the anterior eye chambers of homologous adult mice for 12-14 days. There was no significant difference in the incidence of tooth formation between grafts in which the trigeminal ganglion was included (n = 82, 68 per cent) or excluded (n = 72, 65 per cent). A parallel in vitro study in which E9 and E10 mouse embryo mandibular arches were cult

Management of dens invaginatus type III with large periradicular lesion.

AIM: This study describes a clinical case of type III dens invaginatus with an extensive periradicular lesion treated successfully. BACKGROUND: Dens invaginatus is a maldevelopment of the dental germ which occurs as a result of the invagination of the enamel organ. These cases may present difficulties with respect to its diagnosis and treatment because of canal morphology. The success of endodontic therapy requires a knowledge of dental anatomy and its anomalies. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old female patient is reported presenting right maxillary lateral incisor (tooth no. 7) classified as type

Digital Workflow Using A Free 3-D Mesh Modeling Software as a Tool in the Treatment of a Pediatric Mandibular Fracture.

The treatment of pediatric mandibular fractures is challenging due to the risk of injury to tooth germs and the potential of facial development disturbances. These cases require precise reduction and fixation to minimize such risks, while also promoting return to function. Long-term follow-up is of utmost importance, once the removal of osteosynthesis material due to plate migration might be required. Virtual surgical planning associated with 3-D printing optimizes functional and aesthetic outcomes, while reducing surgical time and intraoperative complications. This study aimed to describe the

Cementum matrix formation in vivo by cultured dental follicle cells.

Dental follicle is the fibrous tissue that surrounds the developing tooth germ, and it is believed to contain progenitors for cementoblasts, periodontal ligament cells, and osteoblasts. In this study, we report the presence of cementoblast progenitors in cultures of bovine dental follicle cells and demonstrate their differentiation capacity. Bovine dental follicle cells (BDFC) obtained from tooth germs by collagenase digestion were compared with bovine alveolar bone osteoblasts (BAOB) and bovine periodontal ligament cells (BPDL) in vitro and in vivo. In culture, BDFC exhibited low levels of al

Original sagittal split osteotomy revisited for mandibular distraction.

INTRODUCTION: A malformed mandible and an abnormally positioned mandibular foramen make it difficult to plan an ideal osteotomy line for mandibular distraction. In addition, there have been reports of such complications as nonunion, damage and stretch injury of the inferior alveolar nerve and tooth germ damage when conventional osteotomy or corticotomy are used for mandibular distraction. The authors utilized the original sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandibular distraction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five patients (three unilateral hemifacial microsomia, one bilateral hemifacial microsomia,
