Efficient Spin-Orbit Torque Switching in a Perpendicularly Magnetized Heusler Alloy MnPtGe Single Layer.

Electrically manipulating magnetic moments by spin-orbit torque (SOT) has great potential applications in magnetic memories and logic devices. Although there have been rich SOT studies on magnetic heterostructures, low interfacial thermal stability and high switching current density still remain an issue. Here, highly textured, polycrystalline Heusler alloy MnxPtyGe (MPG) films with various thicknesses are directly deposited onto thermally oxidized silicon wafers. The perpendicular magnetization of the MPG single layer can be reversibly switched by electrical current pulses with a magnitude as

Spin-orbit torque on nuclear spins exerted by a spin accumulation via hyperfine interactions.

Spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques allow controlling magnetic degrees of freedom in various materials and devices. However, while the transfer of angular momenta between electrons has been widely studied, the contribution of nuclear spins has yet to be explored further. This article demonstrates that the hyperfine coupling, which consists of Fermi contact and dipolar interactions, can mediate the application of spin-orbit torques acting on nuclear spins. Our starting point is a sizable nuclear spin in a metal with electronic spin accumulation. Then, via the hyperfine interactions, the nuclea

Position error-free control of magnetic domain-wall devices via spin-orbit torque modulation.

Magnetic domain-wall devices such as racetrack memory and domain-wall shift registers facilitate massive data storage as hard disk drives with low power portability as flash memory devices. The key issue to be addressed is how perfectly the domain-wall motion can be controlled without deformation, as it can replace the mechanical motion of hard disk drives. However, such domain-wall motion in real media is subject to the stochasticity of thermal agitation with quenched disorders, resulting in severe deformations with pinning and tilting. To sort out the problem, we propose and demonstrate a ne

Ankle Torque Estimation With Motor Unit Discharges in Residual Muscles Following Lower-Limb Amputation.

There has been increased interest in using residual muscle activity for neural control of powered lower-limb prostheses. However, only surface electromyography (EMG)-based decoders have been investigated. This study aims to investigate the potential of using motor unit (MU)-based decoding methods as an alternative to EMG-based intent recognition for ankle torque estimation. Eight people without amputation (NON) and seven people with amputation (AMP) participated in the experiments. Subjects conducted isometric dorsi- and plantarflexion with their intact limb by tracing desired muscle activity

Design, optimization, and crosstalk analysis for robot joint torque sensor of shear beam structure.

Crosstalk resistance is an important criterion for evaluating the measurement error of the Joint Torque Sensor (JTS) in actual collaborative robot application, but few research literature studies on the crosstalk resistance of shear beam-type JTS have been found. This paper proposes a mechanical structure of one shear beam sensor and determines its strain gauge working area. Multi-objective optimization equations are established with three major performance indicators of sensitivity, stiffness, and crosstalk resistance. Optimal processing and manufacturing structure parameters are obtained by

Motor generated torque drives coupled yawing and orbital rotations of kinesin coated gold nanorods.

Kinesin motor domains generate impulses of force and movement that have both translational and rotational (torque) components. Here, we ask how the torque component influences function in cargo-attached teams of weakly processive kinesins. Using an assay in which kinesin-coated gold nanorods (kinesin-GNRs) translocate on suspended microtubules, we show that for both single-headed KIF1A and dimeric ZEN-4, the intensities of polarized light scattered by the kinesin-GNRs in two orthogonal directions periodically oscillate as the GNRs crawl towards microtubule plus ends, indicating that translocat

Systematic bottom-up molecular coarse-graining via force and torque matching using anisotropic particles.

We derive a systematic and general method for parameterizing coarse-grained molecular models consisting of anisotropic particles from fine-grained (e.g., all-atom) models for condensed-phase molecular dynamics simulations. The method, which we call anisotropic force-matching coarse-graining (AFM-CG), is based on rigorous statistical mechanical principles, enforcing consistency between the coarse-grained and fine-grained phase-space distributions to derive equations for the coarse-grained forces, torques, masses, and moments of inertia in terms of properties of a condensed-phase fine-grained sy

EMG-based Simultaneous Estimations of Joint Angle and Torque during Hand Interactions with Environments.

It is necessary to control contact force through modulation of joint stiffness in addition to the position of our limb when manipulating an object. This is achieved by contracting the agonist muscles in an appropriate magnitude, as well as, balancing it with contraction of the antagonist muscles. Here we develop a decoding technique that estimates both the position and torque of a joint of the limb in interaction with an environment based on activities of the agonist-antagonistic muscle pairs using electromyography in real time. The long short-term memory (LSTM) network that is capable of lear

Torque application helps to diagnose incomplete syndesmotic injuries using weight-bearing computed tomography images.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate identification of distal tibio-fibular syndesmotic injuries is essential to limit potential deleterious post-traumatic effects. To date, conventional radiographs, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have shown limited utilization. This cadaver study evaluates the utility of weight-bearing CT scans on the assessment of incomplete and more complete syndesmotic injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten male cadavers (tibial plateau to toe-tip) were included. Weight-bearing CTs were taken under four test conditions, with and without torque on the tibia (c

Supination torque following single- versus double-incision repair of acute distal biceps tendon ruptures.

BACKGROUND: Compared with single-incision (SI) distal biceps repair, double-incision (DI) repair has been described as permitting a more anatomic repair. We hypothesized that DI repair would result in greater terminal supination torque compared with SI repair for acute distal biceps ruptures. METHODS: Patients were included if they sustained an isolated, acute distal biceps rupture repaired between January 2012 and December 2017. Isometric forearm supination torque in 4 positions was measured using a validated uniaxial torque-testing device. Testing took place at least 12 months from surgery.

Real-Time Prediction of Temperature Elevation During Robotic Bone Drilling Using the Torque Signal.

Bone drilling is a surgical procedure commonly required in many surgical fields, particularly orthopedics, dentistry and head and neck surgeries. While the long-term effects of thermal bone necrosis are unknown, the thermal damage to nerves in spinal or otolaryngological surgeries might lead to partial paralysis. Previous models to predict the temperature elevation have been suggested, but were not validated or have the disadvantages of computation time and complexity which does not allow real time predictions. Within this study, an analytical temperature prediction model is proposed which use

Step-to-Step Ankle Inversion/Eversion Torque Modulation Can Reduce Effort Associated with Balance.

Below-knee amputation is associated with higher energy expenditure during walking, partially due to difficulty maintaining balance. We previously found that once-per-step push-off work control can reduce balance-related effort, both in simulation and in experiments with human participants. Simulations also suggested that changing ankle inversion/eversion torque on each step, in response to changes in body state, could assist with balance. In this study, we investigated the effects of ankle inversion/eversion torque modulation on balance-related effort among amputees (N = 5) using a multi-actua

Epstein-Barr virus stimulates torque teno virus replication: a possible relationship to multiple sclerosis.

Viral infections have been implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has frequently been investigated as a possible candidate and torque teno virus (TTV) has also been discussed in this context. Nevertheless, mechanistic aspects remain unresolved. We report viral replication, as measured by genome amplification, as well as quantitative PCR of two TTV-HD14 isolates isolated from multiple sclerosis brain in a series of EBV-positive and -negative lymphoblastoid and Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines. Our results demonstrate the replication of both transfected TTV g

Histopathological investigation in porcine infected with torque teno sus virus type 2 by inoculation.

BACKGROUND: Porcine torque teno sus virus (TTSuV) is a small icosahedral and non-enveloped virus which contains a single-stranded (ssDNA), circular and negative DNA genome and infects mainly vertebrates and is currently classified into the 'floating' genus Anellovirus of Circoviridae with two species. Viral DNA of both porcine TTSuV species has a high prevalence in both healthy and diseased pigs worldwide and multiple infections of TTSuV with distinct genotypes or subtypes of the same species has been documented in the United States, Europe and Asia. However, there exists no information about

Morphology of knee extension torque-time curves following anterior cruciate ligament injury and reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical instability, neurosensory deficits, and/or modified coactivation strategies following anterior cruciate ligament injury and surgery might compromise the ability of the knee extensors to exert a precise force during isokinetic knee extension with maximal effort. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an anterior cruciate ligament deficiency and reconstruction on knee extensor torque-time curve smoothness and to elucidate its association with hamstring (antagonist) activation and physical performance. METHODS: Thirteen subjects who had a unilateral defici

Torque Teno Virus--cause of viral liver disease following liver transplantation: a case report.

Torque Teno Virus (TTV), a nonenveloped human virus of the Circoviridae family, is hepatotropic, causing liver damage, cirrhosis, and, rarely, fulminant hepatitis. It prevails in 10% to 75% of blood donors due to environmental differences, independent of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV)/HCV hepatitis, cryptogenic cirrhosis, alcoholic cirrhosis, and in fulminant hepatitis non-A-G. Reports about the efficacy of clinical alpha interferon are rare. In July 2007, a 65-year-old man who was serologically negative for A-E viruses presented with acute liver failure due to a ruptured hepatic artery aneur
