Interoception abnormalities and skin-picking disorder: Systematic review and narrative synthesis of preliminary evidence.

A growing body of research suggests that disrupted interoception plays an important role in various mental disorders, including Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. However, interoceptive abnormalities in Skin Picking Disorder (SPD) remain unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate and synthesize existing evidence regarding interoceptive disruptions in SPD, adopting a broad definition of interoception encompassing certain types of skin-mediated signals. We searched five databases (PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, Web of Science, Embase) for articles reporting associations between SPD and any intero

EEG correlates to perceived urgency elicited by vibration stimulation of the upper body.

Conveying information effectively while minimizing user distraction is critical to human-computer interaction. As the proliferation of audio-visual communication pushes human information processing capabilities to the limit, researchers are turning their attention to haptic interfaces. Haptic feedback has the potential to create a desirable sense of urgency that allows users to selectively focus on events/tasks or process presented information with minimal distraction or annoyance. There is a growing interest in understanding the neural mechanisms associated with haptic stimulation. In this st

The impact of knitted linked seams on comfort and friction perception.

Friction from knitted clothing can cause discomfort and skin issues, underscoring the importance of tactile comfort for wearers. Seamless knitted garments are assumed to be comfortable to wear, yet there is little understanding of their tactile comfort in comparison to linked seams - the most common form of knitted garment. This novel study examines the influence of a garments knitted structural architecture on clothing comfort and wearability by investigating skin friction and tactile perception across ten body regions in both male and female participants, using two commonly utilised material

Interday Reliability of Upper-limb Geometric MyoPassivity Map for Physical Human-Robot Interaction.

The value of intrinsic energetic behavior of human biomechanics has recently been recognized and exploited in physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). The authors have recently proposed the concept of "Biomechanical Excess of Passivity," based on nonlinear control theory, to construct a user-specific energetic map. The map would assess the behavior of the upper-limb in absorbing the kinesthetic energy when interacting with robots. Integrating such knowledge into the design of pHRI stabilizers can reduce the conservatism of the control by unleashing hidden energy reservoirs indicating a less co

Electroencephalographic Study on Sensory Integration in Visually Induced Postural Sway.

A periodically reversing optic flow animation, experienced while standing, induces an involuntary sway termed visually induced postural sway (VIPS). Interestingly, VIPS is suppressed during light finger touch to a stationary object. Here, we explored whether VIPS is mediated by parietal field activity in the dorsal visual stream as well as by activity in early visual areas, as has been suggested. We performed a mobile brain/body imaging study using high-density electroencephalographic recording from human participants (11 men and 3 women) standing during exposure to periodically reversing opti

Prisms adaptation improves haptic object discrimination in hemispatial neglect.

Neglect manifestations are typically explored in the visual modality. Although they are less commonly investigated tactile deficits also exist, and the aim of this study was to explore neglect in this modality. A haptic object discrimination task was designed to assess whether or not shape perception is impaired in seven right brain damaged patients with or without neglect. Each patient's performance on the object discrimination task was assessed before and after a brief period of prism adaptation, a bottom-up rehabilitation technique known to improve neglect symptoms. The results suggest that

Audiological rehabilitation of older people: visual and vibrotactile considerations.

This paper discusses the peripheral and central visual and tactile pathways with respect to the diminishing integrity of the ageing nervous system. This discussion is based upon extant data derived from investigators in vision and vibrotactile sensation. The purpose in examining these investigations is to ascertain the problems associated with the use of vision and vibrotactile stimulation in the auditory rehabilitation of older people. Speed of processing and simultaneous use of pathways are factors to be considered carefully in order not to contribute to perceptual confusions. The writers hy

Low-threshold mechanoreceptors play a frequency-dependent dual role in subjective ratings of mechanical allodynia.

In the setting of injury, myelinated primary afferent fibers that normally signal light touch are thought to switch modality and instead signal pain. In the absence of injury, touch is perceived as more intense when firing rates of Aβ afferents increase. However, it is not known if varying the firing rates of Aβ afferents have any consequence to the perception of dynamic mechanical allodynia (DMA). We hypothesized that, in the setting of injury, the unpleasantness of DMA would be intensified as the firing rates of Aβ afferents increase. Using a stimulus-response protocol established in normal

Quantifying sensory thresholds along the migraine cycle: An exploratory longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: To date, a number of studies on migraine have cross-sectionally evaluated sensory sensitivity with aversion thresholds/scores along the migraine cycle, reporting a decreased tolerance to sensory stimuli in different sensory modalities. Our hypothesis was that patients with migraine would exhibit heightened sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell on days where they reported greater headache intensity. METHODS: This is an exploratory, longitudinal study, carried out over the course of 27 days. Aversion thresholds or scores to sound, light, touch and smell were quantified in six

Improving speech perception for hearing-impaired listeners using audio-to-tactile sensory substitution with multiple frequency channels.

Cochlear implants (CIs) have revolutionised treatment of hearing loss, but large populations globally cannot access them either because of disorders that prevent implantation or because they are expensive and require specialist surgery. Recent technology developments mean that haptic aids, which transmit speech through vibration, could offer a viable low-cost, non-invasive alternative. One important development is that compact haptic actuators can now deliver intense stimulation across multiple frequencies. We explored whether these multiple frequency channels can transfer spectral information

Measuring the sensitivity of tactile temporal order judgments in sighted and blind participants using the adaptive psi method.

Spatial locations of somatosensory stimuli are coded according to somatotopic (anatomical distribution of the sensory receptors on the skin surface) and spatiotopic (position of the body parts in external space) reference frames. This was mostly evidenced by means of temporal order judgment (TOJ) tasks in which participants discriminate the temporal order of two tactile stimuli, one applied on each hand. Because crossing the hands generates a conflict between anatomical and spatial responses, TOJ performance is decreased in such posture, except for congenitally blind people, suggesting a role

[Age-related changes of sensory system].

Pathological processes usually superimpose on physiological aging even in the sensory system including visual, hearing, olfactory, taste and somatosensory functions. Representative changes of age-related changes are presbyopia, cataracts, and presbyacusis. Reduced sense of smell is seen in normal aging, but the prominent reduction detected by the odor stick identification test is noticed especially in early stage of Alzheimer or Parkinson disease. Reduced sense of taste is well-known especially in salty sense, while the changes of sweet, bitter, and sour tastes are different among individuals.

Studying plasticity of sensory function: insight from pregnancy.

Plasticity of sensory function has become an object of study because of its proposed role in the recovery of function after central nervous system damage. Normal pregnancy may provide a useful in vivo model to study the effects of progressive reduction in the abdominal skin receptor density. As such changes are confined to abdominal skin, other parts of the body are only moderately affected by pregnancy and therefore can provide a control for other changes during pregnancy. The two-point discrimination test (TPDT) of the skin is a simple test of the sensory function. We conducted the TPDT in a

Vibratory and tactile sense of the fingers after working with sanders.

Twenty-four volunteers worked four times in a laboratory under realistic conditions for 80 min with a relatively intensely vibrating plane-sander and a less intensely vibrating band-sander (each sander twice). Immediately before and after exposure, the left and right third finger was measured for vibratory sense with a 100 Hz rod-vibrameter and for width- and depth-sense by means of an apparatus modified after Carlson. The reproducibility of the parameters was poor: coefficients of intra-individual variation were 20 to 60%. After using the plane-sander the threshold of the width-sense in the r

Electrophysiological correlates of the somatotopically organized tactile duration aftereffect.

Adaptation to sensory events of long or short duration leads to a negative aftereffect, in which a new target event (of median duration) following the adaptation will be perceived to be shorter or longer than is actually the case. This illusion has been observed in visual, auditory, and tactile modalities. This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the tactile duration aftereffect, using the contingent negative variation (CNV) and the late positive component (LPC) as a way to characterize the temporal processes. The tactile duration adaptation was found to induce a significant

How visual experience shapes body representation.

We do not have a veridical representation of our body in our mind. For instance, tactile distances of equal measure along the medial-lateral axis of our limbs are generally perceived as larger than those running along the proximal-distal axis. This anisotropy in tactile distances reflects distortions in body-shape representation, such that the body parts are perceived as wider than they are. While the origin of such anisotropy remains unknown, it has been suggested that visual experience could partially play a role in its manifestation. To causally test the role of visual experience on body sh

Fingertip Pressure Feedback Increases the Perceived Length of a Handheld Object.

In haptics, supporting dynamic touch, the perception of object properties such as length and shape through wielding, remains a significant challenge, often requiring complex and bulky devices. This paper investigates whether the perceived length of a wielded physical object can be augmented using only dynamic cutaneous (pressure) feedback to the fingertips, motivated by the recent advancement of haptic gloves. We designed pressure feedback profiles inspired by the biomechanical changes in finger pressure that naturally occur during wielding. These profiles deliver sequential pressure stimuli t

The role of pain in Graves' orbitopathy: Associations with clinical activity and quality of life.

PURPOSE: Pain is included in the clinical activity score (CAS) as an indicator of inflammatory activity in Graves' orbitopathy (GO), yet its clinical relevance has not been systematically evaluated. We therefore investigated the relationship between pain, other inflammatory signs and quality of life (QoL), and assessed the effect of intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) treatment on pain perception in GO. METHODS: In this prospective study, 40 patients with GO were assessed pre-treatment and 12 and 24 weeks after initiation of IVMP treatment. Pain was measured using numeric rating scale (NRS)
