Supporting Evidence-based Responses to Emotional Needs in Emphysema (SERENE): protocol for a randomized, open-label mechanistic trial comparing Coping Skills Training and disease-specific education for depressive symptoms conducted in United States health systems.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms and anxiety are highly prevalent among people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), strongly associated with poor outcomes, and rarely recognized or treated. Integrating families into interventions may amplify supportive care treatment effects and overcome common challenges, yet this strategy is understudied. The Supporting Evidence-based Responses to Emotional Needs in Emphysema (SERENE) trial's main objective is to identify the mechanisms through which a family-partnered Coping Skills Training (CST) reduces depressive symptoms among patients with

Supporting African communities to increase resilience and mental health of kids with developmental disabilities and their caregivers using the World Health Organization's Caregiver Skills Training Programme (SPARK trial): study protocol for a cluster randomised clinical controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Most children with developmental disabilities (DD) live in low- and middle-income countries, but access to services is limited, impacting their ability to thrive. Pilot study findings of the World Health Organization's Caregiver Skills Training (WHO CST) intervention, which equips caregivers with strategies to facilitate learning and adaptive behaviours in children with DD, are promising but evidence from an appropriately powered trial delivered by non-specialist facilitators is lacking. This study will investigate the effectiveness and the resource impacts and costs and consequenc

Effectiveness of Zhong-Yong thinking based dialectical behavior therapy group skills training versus supportive group therapy for lowering suicidal risks in Chinese young adults: A randomized controlled trial with a 6-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a first-line treatment for the prevention of suicide. Zhong-Yong thinking could be viewed as a Chinese way of dialectical thinking, has long been a culturally dictating thinking style in China. To enhance cultural adaptability, we integrated Zhong-Yong thinking into DBT group skills training and examined its efficacy in suicidal prevention compared with a supportive group therapy and a wait-list group in high-risk suicidal Chinese college students. METHODS: A total of 97 suicidal participants were randomized to either Zhong-Yong thinking based

Emergency Intraoperative Ultrasound for the Neurosurgical Trainee.

The use of intraoperative ultrasound in emergency cranial neurosurgical procedures is not well described. It may improve surgical outcomes and is useful when other neuro-navigation systems are not readily available. We provide a practical guide for neurosurgical trainees to utilize ultrasound for various emergency cranial neurosurgical procedures, including lesion localization, insertion of an external ventricular drain, and shunt revision surgery. Intraoperative ultrasound is a useful modality for urgent neurosurgical procedures.

Supported exercise TrAining for Men wIth prostate caNcer on Androgen deprivation therapy (STAMINA): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial of the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the STAMINA lifestyle intervention compared with optimised usual care, including internal pilot and parallel process evaluation.

BACKGROUND: UK national clinical guidance recommends that men with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy are offered twice weekly supervised aerobic and resistance exercise to address iatrogenic harm caused by treatment. Very few NHS trusts have established adequate provision of such services. Furthermore, interventions fail to demonstrate sustained behaviour change. The STAMINA lifestyle intervention offers a system-level change to clinical care delivery addressing barriers to long-term behaviour change and implementation of new prostate cancer care pathways. This trial aims to esta

An open-label, randomized, controlled trial on the benefit of β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate, l-arginine, l-glutamine combination beverages and locomotion training as supportive care for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma using lenvatinib: A pilot study (HELLO study).

INTRODUCTION: Hand-foot-skin reaction (HFSR) is the most common side effect of multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC). Sarcopenia has been reported to be a poor prognostic factor for HCC. Here, we performed a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the efficacy of a β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate/l-arginine/l-glutamine (HMB/Arg/Gln) beverage and locomotion training as supportive care in the treatment of uHCC with lenvatinib. METHODS: A total of 20 patients were enrolled from the jRCTs031190252 trial in this pilot study. HFSR was the primary endpoint

Financial Aid for Dental Students: Implications of Recent Legislation.

In July 2025, Congress enacted major reforms to higher education funding by passing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), overhauling federal student loan programs, setting limits on federal borrowing, and abruptly ending the Graduate PLUS loan program. These changes may significantly impact access to dental education-especially for students from low-income or underserved backgrounds-and further worsen the ongoing shortage of oral health clinicians in rural and underserved areas, whose populations already face challenges to receiving adequate oral healthcare.

Supporting neurodivergent nursing students in their practice placements.

Neurodivergent conditions such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Tourette's syndrome are common, and it is highly likely that practice assessors and supervisors will be asked to support neurodivergent nursing students in their practice learning environments. This article details the strengths that neurodivergent students can bring to nursing, as well as some of the challenges they may experience in practice settings. It outlines how practice assessors and supervisors can develop neuro-inclusive learning environments where neurodive

Possible Rehabilitation Procedures to Treat Sarcopenic Dysphagia.

Sarcopenic dysphagia requires the presence of both dysphagia and generalized sarcopenia. The causes of dysphagia, except for sarcopenia, are excluded. The treatment for sarcopenic dysphagia includes resistance training along with nutritional support; however, whether rehabilitation procedures are useful remains unclear. In this narrative review, we present possible rehabilitation procedures as a resistance training for managing sarcopenic dysphagia, including Shaker exercise, Mendelsohn maneuver, tongue-hold swallow exercise, jaw-opening exercise, swallow resistance exercise, lingual exercise,

Social Network Intervention in Physical Education Classes Through Social Support to Promote Physical Activity and Reduce Screen Time in Adolescents: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

Physical activity (PA) and screen time (ST) are complex behaviors influenced by social factors such as relationships with family and friends, linked to mechanisms such as social support. This study implemented a segmentation-based social network intervention which is a promising approach to improving health-behaviors in a network. The objective was to determine the effects of a social network intervention through social support from friends and parents on PA and ST among adolescents. A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted involving 4 schools, 24 classrooms, with 787 adolescents. A

In-service training programme for health and social care workers in the Philippines to strengthen interprofessional collaboration in caring for older adults: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of older adults require complex care, but coordination among professionals to provide comprehensive and high-quality care is perceived to be inadequate. Opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills important for interprofessional collaboration in the context of geriatric care are limited, particularly for those already in the workforce. A short-term training programme in interprofessional collaboration for health and social care workers in the Philippines was designed and pilot tested. The programme was devised following a review of the literature about geriatric

Including overweight or obese students in physical education: a social ecological constraint model.

In this review, we propose a social ecological constraint model to study inclusion of overweight or obese students in physical education by integrating key concepts and assumptions from ecological constraint theory in motor development and social ecological models in health promotion and behavior. The social ecological constraint model proposes that constraints exist on five different levels and interact within and across levels to affect overweight students' engagement, learning, and physical activity in physical education. This model can provide a theoretical framework to guide and organize

Mitigating Global Oral Health Inequalities: Research Training Programs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Although oral diseases are largely preventable, they are among the most non-communicable diseases globally, and they disproportionately burden disadvantaged communities, specially within low- and middle-income nations. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the social, economic, and health inequalities in our society, including the existing global oral health inequalities. There is a shortage of dentist-scientist all around the world, especially in developing countries, such as Thailand. Focused echocardiographic evaluation in resuscitation management: concept of an advanced life support-conformed algorithm.

Emergency ultrasound is suggested to be an important tool in critical care medicine. Time-dependent scenarios occur during preresuscitation care, during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and in postresuscitation care. Suspected myocardial insufficiency due to acute global, left, or right heart failure, pericardial tamponade, and hypovolemia should be identified. These diagnoses cannot be made with standard physical examination or the electrocardiogram. Furthermore, the differential diagnosis of pulseless electrical activity is best elucidated with echocardiography. Therefore, we developed an algo

Occupational therapy education in health promotion and disease prevention.

Educational experiences and didactic materials on health promotion are necessary for occupational therapists to remain current in the profession. This paper reviews health promotion learning experiences to determine the "state of the art" in this important area. It was found that few papers or workshops have been given at recent AOTA Annual Conferences; five universities received Allied Health Grants, which included occupational therapists, to develop health promotion learning materials; and occupational therapy educational curricula for the most part do include something on health promotion.

The use of cognitive aids during emergencies in anesthesia: a review of the literature.

Cognitive aids are prompts designed to help users complete a task or series of tasks. They may take the form of posters, flowcharts, checklists, or even mnemonics. It has been suggested that the use of cognitive aids improves performance and patient outcomes during anesthetic emergencies; however, a systematic assessment of the evidence is lacking. The aim of this literature review was to determine (1) whether cognitive aids improve performance of individuals and teams and (2) whether recommendations can be made for future cognitive aid design, testing, and implementation.
