INTRODUCTION: The aim was to investigate the risk factors for recurrence after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and to provide a basis for clinical prevention of recurrence of NMIBC.
METHODS: From January 2012 to December 2020, 592 patients with NMIBC who underwent TURBT attending the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University were retrospectively included in this study. Patients were divided into relapse and relapse-free groups according to whether relapse occurred within 2 years. Ultimately, 72 patients

AIMS: Frozen section (FS) consultation is generally an accurate diagnostic modality. At our institution, we are frequently asked to assess transurethral resection specimens (TURBT) at FS for muscularis propria (MP) invasion by carcinoma. This study documents our experience in evaluating cancer-containing TURBT specimens at FS for MP invasion.
METHODS: 32 TURBT sent for FS from 2008-2010 were identified. The FS and permanent section (PS) diagnoses were reviewed. Cases excluded from the calculation of test performance included: (1) cases without cancer on FS or PS slides, (2) FS diagnosis defer

INTRODUCTION: Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy is an established treatment for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Although systemic BCG infection is rare, infectious aortic aneurysm is a potentially fatal complication.
CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his 70s underwent transurethral resection of a bladder tumor followed by intravesical BCG therapy. One year later, computed tomography revealed a saccular abdominal aortic aneurysm with extensive periaortic inflammation and an iliopsoas abscess. Polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed Mycobacterium bovis BCG infection. Despit

PURPOSE: Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) can recur, partly due to seeding of free tumour cells after transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT). Intravesical chemotherapy post-TURBT can reduce the risk but is used infrequently and inconsistently due to cost, complexity and side effects. The objective of this study was to prospectively assess continuous bladder irrigation using water, which may be a safer and easier alternative with comparable effectiveness.
METHODS: WATIP was a prospective, single-arm phase 2 study of water irrigation during and for at least 3 h after TURBT

BACKGROUND: Identification of patient subclasses that correlate with the diagnostic performance of photodynamic diagnostic (PDD)-assisted transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) may improve outcomes.
METHODS: Data were extracted from patients that underwent PDD-assisted TURBT at the University of Tsukuba Hospital between 2018 and 2023. Sensitivity and specificity were evaluated based on PDD findings (excluding WL findings) and pathology results. Cluster analysis using uniform manifold approximation and projection and k-means methods was performed, focusing on patients with malignant

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, in a long-term follow-up of T1 high-grade bladder cancer treated in a prospective, randomized trial, whether fluorescence diagnosis (FD) increases recurrence-free survival (RFS) or reduces progression to muscle-invasive stages.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 191 patients with suspected superficial bladder cancer were treated with transurethral resection under white light (WL) or with FD; 46 presented with initial T1 high-grade BC (WL, 25; FD, 21). There were no differences in multifocality of tumours, concomitant carcinoma in situ or tumour size in either group.

Some studies suggest that chemoresection with mitomycin C (MMC) is comparable to transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) in the management of recurrent nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). In this meta-analysis, we compared the efficacy and safety of MMC and TURBT in recurrent NMIBC. A search was conducted for studies published in English in the electronic databases of MEDLINE/PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, ProQuest, System for information on Grey Literature, and ClinicalTrials.gov, with no publication date restrictions. Risk of bias was as

The prognosis and safety of continuous saline bladder irrigation (CSBI) after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURB) as an alternative method needs to be explored. A literature review and meta-analysis were performed by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library databases and original references of the included articles. PRISMA checklists were followed. We used the GRADEpro GDT to assess the certainty of evidence from the results of our meta-analysis. A total of eight articles including 1600 patients were studied. The results indicated that patients received CSBI after TURB had no sta

BACKGROUND: Male patients undergoing transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) are prone to suffer from catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD). Lidocaine administration has been widely performed to reduce postoperative pain. Here, the effect of intravenous lidocaine administration on moderate-to-severe CRBD was evaluated in male patients undergoing TURBT.
METHODS: Patients were randomly allocated to receive intravenous lidocaine (1.5 mg/kg bolus dose followed by a 2 mg/kg/h continuous infusion during the intraoperative period, which was continued for 1 hour postsurgery; group L) o
