A multifactorial model of factors associated with PTSD, anxiety and depression among migrants in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Migrants are at increased risk for mental health problems due to stressors before, during, and after migration. However, evidence on the factors associated with migrant mental health in Spain remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine how four domains- (1) sociodemographic and psychological characteristics, (2) migration-related factors, (3) social and occupational conditions, and (4) health-related quality of life factors-are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression among migrants. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between June 20

International prevalence of childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder: INTERSECT study.

BACKGROUND: Around 140 million births occur worldwide annually. For some women, childbirth is traumatic and can lead to childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD), with adverse consequences for both women and their families. However, international evidence remains limited. AIMS: To estimate the international prevalence of traumatic birth and CB-PTSD. METHOD: The International Survey of Childbirth-Related Trauma (INTERSECT) is a cross-sectional survey conducted in 31 countries. Women were eligible if they were 6-12 weeks postpartum, legally adults and provided informed consen

ICD-11 PTSD and Complex PTSD Among Internally Displaced Civilian Outpatients in Ukraine During Wartime.

BACKGROUND: Since the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, civilians have experienced substantial war-related trauma, yet little is known about the prevalence and risk factors of ICD-11 post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD) among internally displaced persons (IDPs) actively seeking medical or psychological care. AIMS: To examine the prevalence of PTSD and CPTSD in a clinical sample of Ukrainian IDPs, compare diagnostic rates between psychological and medical treatment-seekers, and identify sociodemographic and war-related predictors of diagnostic outcomes. METHODS: A

Psychosocial and Economic Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Mental Health of Veteran Men and Women.

Purpose: The psychosocial impacts of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on women Veterans' mental health compared to men are understudied, with few studies examining the differential impact of COVID-19 stressors on depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Furthermore, little is known about whether social support may buffer against adverse pandemic-related outcomes for this population. In the present study, we examined (1) gender differences in the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on numerous life domains, including economic, work, home, social, and health; (2) how pan

The Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide (PACAP) System of the Central Amygdala Mediates the Detrimental Effects of Chronic Social Defeat Stress in Rats.

Many psychiatric diseases stem from an inability to cope with stressful events, as chronic stressors can precipitate or exacerbate psychopathologies. The neurobiological mechanisms underlying the response to chronic stress and the resulting anxiety states remain poorly understood. Stress neuropeptides in the extended amygdala circuitry mediate the behavioral response to stress, and hyperactivity of these systems has been hypothesized to be responsible for the emergence of persistent negative outcomes and for the pathogenesis of anxiety-related and trauma-related disorders. Pituitary adenylate

A longitudinal study of mental health before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Syrian refugees.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in increased anxiety and depression around the world. Refugees may be particularly vulnerable to the mental health effects of the pandemic because of their higher rates of mental health disorders, trauma histories, and daily stressors. OBJECTIVES: This study used data from a controlled trial of a brief behavioural intervention for psychological distress in Syrian refugees living in Azraq Camp in Jordan to examine the psychological effects of the pandemic on refugee mental health. METHOD: A total of 410 participants were randomized to either the

The burden of full and subsyndromal posttraumatic stress disorder among police involved in the World Trade Center rescue and recovery effort.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the prevalence, correlates, and perceived mental healthcare needs associated with subsyndromal PTSD in police involved in the World Trade Center (WTC) rescue and recovery effort. METHODS: A total of 8466 police completed an interview/survey as part of the WTC Medical monitoring and Treatment Program an average of four years after 9/11/2001. RESULTS: The past month prevalence of full and subsyndromal WTC-related PTSD was 5.4% and 15.4%, respectively. Loss of someone or knowing someone injured on 9/11 (odds ratios [ORs]=1.56-1.86), pre-9/11 stressors (ORs=1.30-1

Understanding the Psychological Impact of Medical Care Experiences on Adults With Craniofacial Conditions: A Pilot Survey of Traumatic Stress Symptoms and Resilience.

Craniofacial conditions often require extensive medical care and surgeries throughout childhood and adolescence. However, there is limited research investigating the psychological effects of craniofacial care, including risks for medical traumatic stress. This cross-sectional study investigated the medical care experiences of adults with craniofacial conditions, including the frequency of potentially traumatic medical events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and resilience. Participants (N=34; mean age 35.2 ± 12.2 y; 71% female) were recruited at 3 US pediatric hospitals and cra

Measurement invariance of the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 across eight countries and samples with diverse trauma experiences.

The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) is a well-known tool for measuring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Although the tool has been translated into many different languages, only one study, conducted in European countries, has examined measurement invariance (MI) across these versions. The present study aimed to verify PCL-5 MI in eight countries: Argentina, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Poland, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. All samples included at least 200 participants. Regarding trauma type, the highest number of individuals reported experiencing a traf

The psychological health of forensic investigators following mass fatality incidents: a cross-sectional study 9 months after the Jeju Air crash in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: Following the Jeju Air crash in Muan (South Korea) on December 29, 2024, resulting in 179 fatalities, forensic investigators (FIs) were exposed to traumatic scenes while performing disaster victim identification (DVI) procedures. FIs are known to be at significant risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues due to their routine exposure to traumatic scenes. Despite its clinical significance, there remains a paucity of empirical research quantitatively evaluating the psychological ramifications of DVI procedures and associated occupational stresso

Prevalence and factors associated with postpartum posttraumatic stress in a population-based maternity survey in England.

BACKGROUND: Studies on prevalence and factors associated with postpartum posttraumatic stress (PTS) typically do not distinguish between PTS related to childbirth (PTS-C) and PTS related to other stressors (PTS-O). This study aimed to describe the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and factors associated with PTS-C and PTS-O in postpartum women. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional population-based survey of 16,000 postpartum women, selected at random from birth registrations in England to receive a postal questionnaire, including the Primary Care Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Screen.

Risk, coping and PTSD symptom trajectories in World Trade Center responders.

Trajectories of disaster-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are often heterogeneous, and associated with common and unique risk factors, yet little is known about potentially modifiable psychosocial characteristics associated with low-symptom and recovering trajectories in disaster responders. A total of 4487 rescue and recovery workers (1874 police and 2613 non-traditional responders) involved during and in the aftermath of the unprecedented World Trade Center (WTC) attacks, were assessed an average of 3, 6, 8, and 12 years post-9/11/2001. Among police responders, WTC-relat

Universal suicide risk assessment for veterans and soldiers in all healthcare settings: A nursing imperative.

PURPOSE: Suicide remains a major public health concern among U.S. veterans and active-duty military personnel. This narrative review examines evidence supporting routine suicide risk screening and considers its implementation as a clinically appropriate, trauma-informed process rather than an inflexible requirement at every encounter. METHODS: A structured narrative review used targeted searches of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus, supplemented by federal surveillance reports, clinical guidance, and policy documents. Evidence was synthesized across five domains: suicide prevalence and tre

Trauma surgeons experience compassion fatigue: A major metropolitan area survey.

INTRODUCTION: Compassion fatigue (CF), the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of helping others, is composed of three domains: compassion satisfaction (CS), secondary traumatic stress (STS), and burnout (BO). Trauma surgeons (TSs) experience work-related stress resulting in high rates of CF, which can manifest as physical and psychological disorders. We hypothesized that TSs experience CF and there are potentially modifiable systemic factors to mitigate its symptoms. METHODS: All TSs in a major metropolitan area were eligible. Personal and professional demographic information was o

Exploring Care and Recovery for Individuals With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Most people experience trauma at some point in their lives. The sources of trauma can include accidents, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, combat, torture, or the death of a loved one. Experiencing or witnessing any of these, or other terrifying events, may make one susceptible to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a trauma- and stressor-related mental health condition. The common symptoms and consequences of PTSD include intrusive and distressing thoughts, memories, or flashbacks related to the traumatic event; avoidance of situations, people, or activities that re

Age-Related Variation in Ecological Resources Among Veterans Seeking Treatment Related to Military Sexual Trauma.

Approximately 16% of Veterans experience military sexual trauma (MST), defined as sexual assault or harassment experienced during military service. Veterans across life stages may possess differing resources and face unique stressors that impact their ability to engage in mental health treatment or require additional liaison to services. The present study sought to characterize age-related differences in the socioecological contexts of Veterans seeking mental health treatment following MST in the domains of economic sufficiency, housing, spiritual coping, supportive relationships, and interper

An aptamer-responsive microneedle patch sensor platform combining with hybridization chain reaction amplification for detection of steroid hormone cortisol in skin interstitial fluid.

Fluctuations in cortisol levels from stressors are critical for the evaluation of endocrine function in body, and abnormal levels of cortisol may indicate serious health risks. Common strategies for cortisol detection are limited by the drawbacks of the intricate and time-consuming operations and the generation of body trauma. Herein, an aptamer-responsive microneedle patch sensor combining with hybridization chain reaction (HCR) amplification (Apt-HCR MN COR patch) was prepared for easy, accurate and minimally-invasive detection of cortisol in skin interstitial fluid (ISF). In this microneedl

Cango Lyec (Healing the Elephant): Probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in Northern Uganda five years after a violent conflict.

BACKGROUND: From 1986 to 2006, Northern Uganda experienced an atrocious civil war between the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan government. Acholi people living in the region continue to be impacted by trauma sequelae of the war and a wide range of daily stressors including poverty, hunger, and high rates of HIV infection. To date, there is a dearth of gender-differentiated mental health research in this post-conflict setting. The current study aimed to estimate the prevalence of probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression in three districts most affected by the No

Acute stress symptoms, dissociation, and depression among rescue personnel 24 hours after the Bet-Yehoshua train crash: the effects of exposure to dead bodies.

INTRODUCTION: The immediate impact of exposure to severe wounds, dead bodies, and immediate threat to life has been understudied. Most studies focus on the acute stress disorder and/or post-traumatic stress disorder phases in order to assess rescue personnel's symptomatology, and tend to neglect the immediate exposure to elements of the disaster. HYPOTHESIS: Rescue personnel who had a history of previous exposure to dead bodies would exhibit higher levels of acute stress symptoms, dissociation, and depressive symptoms within the 24 hours following a traumatic event. METHODS: Twenty-three res
