Adult Fasciola hepatica in the rectus abdominis muscle: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease in regard to public health, which is sporadically reported from different parts of the world. Adult worms infect the liver and bile ducts, but extrahepatic involvement and the development of parasitic myositis and muscle mass caused by Fasciola hepatica are uncommon and very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old Iranian female presented with a history of abdominal pain, epigastric tenderness without pallor and jaundice, along with significant weight loss for the past five months. Microscopic examination of the stool did not identify adult worms

Assessment of a 27-kDa antigen in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in Vietnamese patients.

Fasciolosis has emerged as an important zoonotic disease in many parts of the world. In recent years, an increasing number of human cases were reported in Vietnam. In this study, the 27-kDa component protein from the excretory/secretory production of adult Fasciola gigantica, purified by high performance liquid chromatography, was assessed in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect antibodies against Fasciola spp. for diagnosis of human fasciolosis. The ELISA showed a high sensitivity (100%) and specificity (97.67%) when tested on patients with fasciolosis, other parasitic infec

ON LIVER FLUKE (FASCIOLA HEPATICA) IN CAPTIVE VICUÑAS (VICUGNA VICUGNA) AT KNOWSLEY SAFARI, PRESCOT, UNITED KINGDOM.

Knowsley Safari (KS), Prescot, United Kingdom houses a variety of captive exotic ungulates. As part of their animal welfare plan, a prospective coprological survey was undertaken for liver fluke. In June 2021, 330 fecal samples, representative of 18 exotic ungulate species, were processed by sedimentation and filtration, with examination by coproscopy. Finding fascioliasis in all five vicuña alone, with fecal egg counts ranging from one to eight eggs per gram, anthelminthic treatment was attempted twice, with three coprological reviews. While the first anthelminthic treatment (oxyclozanide) wa

Acute fascioliasis--clinical and epidemiological features of four patients in Chile.

Because of its infrequent and protean presentation and the lack of clinical data, the management of acute infections with the foodborne trematode Fasciola hepatica is challenging. We report four serologically confirmed cases that illustrate our experience with this parasitic infection in Chile. All patients were adults presenting with upper abdominal pain. Other symptoms included fever, nausea/vomiting, and cutaneous manifestations. In all cases, marked eosinophilia was present. All patients lived in an urban environment, and three reported the consumption of raw watercress. Computed tomograph

The First Case of Human Hepatic Fasciolosis Presented as Hepatic Pseudotumor Histopathologically Diagnosed in Romania-A Case Report.

Human hepatic fasciolosis has been reported in 81 countries, some of which are endemic areas. In Europe, case reports from humans were published in Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy. Regarding Romania, we do not have any data on the prevalence of this parasitosis, with the exception of two cases of twins that were born in Romania and diagnosed in the last 37 years in Italy after joining their mother that lived there. We report the case of a patient diagnosed in Romania with chronic fasciolosis, presented as a hepatic pseudotumor that was diagnosed during the histopathological examination of t

Assessment of anthelmintic effectiveness to control Fasciola hepatica and paramphistome mixed infection in cattle in the humid tropics of Mexico.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the main anthelmintics used for the control of trematodes in cattle in an endemic area in the humid Mexican tropics. A diagnostic study was carried out in nine cattle farms to determine the prevalence of flukes through faecal examination. Only three farms with more than 20 cows positive to trematodes were chosen to determine the effectiveness of commercial anthelmintics (triclabendazole, TCBZ; ivermectin + closantel, (IVM + CLOS); IVM + clorsulon, (CLORS); nitroxynil, NITROX). The prevalence of Fasciola hepatica was 27.1% and 29.

Hepatic Fascioliasis Mimicking Hydatid Cyst and Complicated by Portal Vein Thrombosis: A Case Report From Ethiopia.

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic helminthic infection often underdiagnosed in humans, particularly in endemic regions like Ethiopia. In its hepatic migratory phase, it can mimic other liver pathologies such as hydatid cysts or pyogenic liver abscesses, making diagnosis difficult. We report a case of a 48-year-old Ethiopian woman with a three-month history of right upper quadrant abdominal pain, intermittent fever, and vomiting. She frequently consumed raw lettuce and tomatoes. Laboratory evaluation revealed leukocytosis with marked eosinophilia. Abdominal ultrasound showed a heterogeneous hepatic le

Case Report: "Area of Focus" Atypical Trichinellosis and Fascioliasis Coinfection.

Parasitic co-infection is commonly observed in natural populations, yet rare in the laboratory. Multiparasitism can have negative effects on the host, ranging from the atypical manifestations to increased mortality, consequently, it may be misdiagnosed and treated with unsuitable anthelmintic medicines. Therefore, reliable diagnosis is critical for appropriate treatment of parasitic co-infection. Herein, we report a case of a 31-year-old woman with persistent eosinophilia and hypoechoic liver lesion on ultrasound. The microscopic examination of multiple stool specimens did not find any pathoge

Living Liver Donor With Fasciola Hepatica: First Case Report in the Literature.

The major advantage of preoperative magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography is that living liver donor candidates with complicated biliary tracts may not be exposed to unnecessary laparotomy. To the best of our knowledge, the case presented here features a condition so far not seen by the Liver Transplantation Society. A 27-year-old woman who presented to our clinic as a living liver donor candidate was evaluated but did not have a preoperative magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography due to technical factors. After parenchymal transection, the right hepatic duct was incised just distal

Human paragonimiasis is caused by nine species of Paragonimus, namely, P. westermani, P. africanus, P. heterotremus, P. kellicotti, P. mexicanus, P. siamensis, P. skrjabini, P. skrjabini miyazakii, and P. uterobilateralis. Cerebral or spinal involvements are most common in P. westermani, and can also occur in P. skrjabini, P. skrjabini miyazakii, and P. mexicanus. In P. westermani, cerebral paragonimiasis comprises about 45% of all extrapulmonary paragonimiasis cases, and accounts for about 1% of all paragonimiasis patients. In cerebral paragonimiasis, seizure, headache, visual disturbance, an

Fasciola hepatica: the infectivity of cattle-origin miracidia had increased over the past years in central France.

A retrospective study on experimental infections of Galba truncatula, originating from four populations, was carried out to determine the infectivity of Fasciola hepatica miracidia in snails either subjected to single-miracidium or bimiracidial exposures in 2006 and to compare it with results found before 1990 in other experiments using the same protocol. In single-miracidium infections, the prevalence of snail infection was significantly greater in 2006 than in experiments performed before 1980, while snail survival at day 30 postexposure showed insignificant differences. In bimiracidial infe

Four successive cases of human fasciolosis in Japan.

Fasciolosis is a food-borne parasitic disease, caused by the large liver fluke, Fasciola. Humans acquire infection by ingesting fresh or undercooked water plants, on which infective metacercaria encyst. In spite of the rarity of the disease in Japan, we encountered four successive fasciolosis patients within a short period, who were all living in the same area. The patients were 70-82 years old, three females and the husband of one of the female patients. They started complaining of non-specific symptoms, such as fever, general fatigue, appetite loss, and abdominal pain, almost at the same tim

Activity of benzimidazoles against Dientamoeba fragilis (Trichomonadida, Monocercomonadidae) in vitro and correlation of beta-tubulin sequences as an indicator of resistance.

Recently, Dientamoeba fragilis has emerged as a significant and common enteropathogen. The majority of patients with dientamoebiasis present with gastrointestinal complaints and chronic symptoms are common. Numerous studies have successfully demonstrated parasite clearance, coupled with complete resolution of clinical symptoms following treatment with various antiparasitic compounds. Despite this, there is very little in vitro susceptibility data available for the organism. Benzimidazoles are a class of antiparasitic drugs that are commonly used for the treatment of protozoan and helminthic in

Ultrastructural changes to the tegumental system and the gastrodermal cells in adult Fasciola hepatica following in vivo treatment with the experimental fasciolicide, compound alpha.

Sheep infected with the triclabendazole-susceptible, Cullompton isolate of Fasciola hepatica were dosed with 15 mg/kg of compound alpha at 12 weeks post-infection. Adult flukes were recovered from the bile ducts at 24, 48 and 72 h post-treatment (p.t.). Ultrastructural changes to the flukes were assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with a view to gathering information on the mechanism(s) of action for compound alpha and on the possible route of its entry into F. hepatica. The tegumental syncytium was more severely affected than the gut at all time-points p.t. with compound al
