The functional neuroanatomy of verbal memory in Alzheimer's disease: [18F]-Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) correlates of recency and recognition memory.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to distinguish the functional neuroanatomy of verbal learning and recognition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) Word Learning task. METHOD: In 81 Veterans diagnosed with dementia due to AD, we conducted a cluster-based correlation analysis to assess the relationships between recency and recognition memory scores from the CERAD Word Learning Task and cortical metabolic activity measured using [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). RESULTS: AD pat

Associations Between Internalized HIV Stigma and Cognitive Function Among Older Women With HIV.

OBJECTIVES: Internalized HIV stigma refers to the negative beliefs, feelings, and attitudes that people with HIV (PWH) adopt about themselves due to societal HIV stigma. Internalized HIV stigma negatively affects mental health but less is known about this factor on cognitive function in PWH. This study examines associations between internalized HIV stigma and cognition among women aged 50+ with HIV. METHODS: Internalized HIV stigma was measured in the Women's Interagency HIV Study between 2013 and 2015 using the HIV stigma scale (negative self-image subscale). Executive function, processing s

Neuropsychological assessment of learning disabilities: a discriminant analysis.

The neuropsychological test scores of 23 learning disabled children were compared with those of a matched population of normal children in the 9-1 to 13-1 age range. All children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), a dichotic listening task involving both free and directed recall conditions, a handedness inventory, the Tactile Performance Test and the Category Test from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant separation between groups (p less than .001) using these procedures

Predictors of participation in community outpatient psychosocial rehabilitation in schizophrenia.

This study investigated demographic, clinical and neurocognitive factors predicting drop-out from an intensive, community outpatient psychosocial rehabilitation program for people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. One-hundred and twenty-seven outpatients with DSM-IV schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder participated. Demographic variables of age, sex, education and race/ethnicity were recorded and formal symptom measures and a neurocognitive assessment consisting of measures of crystallized verbal ability, sustained visual vigilance, verbal learning, verbal fluency and proble

Insulin Resistance Predicts Cognitive Decline: An 11-Year Follow-up of a Nationally Representative Adult Population Sample.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether insulin resistance, assessed by HOMA of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), is an independent predictor of cognitive decline. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The roles of HOMA-IR, fasting insulin and glucose, HbA1c, and hs-CRP as predictors of cognitive performance and its change were evaluated in the Finnish nationwide, population-based Health 2000 Health Examination Survey and its 11-year follow-up, the Health 2011 study (n = 3,695, mean age at baseline 49.3 years, 55.5% women). Categorical verbal fluency, word-list learning, and word-list dela

Paired associate learning in Chinese children with dyslexia.

A total of 82 Chinese 11- and 12-year-olds with and without dyslexia were tested on four paired associate learning (PAL) tasks, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, rapid naming, and verbal short-term memory in three different experiments. Experiment 1 demonstrated that children with dyslexia were significantly poorer in visual-verbal PAL than nondyslexic children but that these groups did not differ in visual-visual PAL performance. In Experiment 2, children with dyslexia had more difficulties in transferring rules to new stimuli in a rule-based visual-verbal PAL task as compared

Naming, the formation of stimulus classes, and applied behavior analysis.

The methods used in Sidman's original studies on equivalence classes provide a framework for analyzing functional verbal behavior. Sidman and others have shown how teaching receptive, name-referent matching may produce rudimentary oral reading and word comprehension skills. Eikeseth and Smith (1992) have extended these findings by showing that children with autism may acquire equivalence classes after learning to supply a common oral name to each stimulus in a potential class. A stimulus class analysis suggests ways to examine (a) the problem of programming generalization from teaching situati

Hemispheric lateralization of Tau associations with visual and verbal memory in Alzheimer's disease.

PURPOSE: Alzheimer's disease affects the brain in complex ways, and the location of tau tangles may influence specific types of memory problems. In this study, we examined how tau accumulation relates to verbal and visual memory performance, and whether these associations show a preference for one hemisphere of the brain over the other. METHODS: We administered the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and its nonverbal analog, the Aggie Figures Learning Test (AFLT), to 132 cognitively unimpaired elderly participants and 44 cognitively impaired, amyloid-positive individuals from the Trans

Developmental changes in the cognitive and educational profiles of children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is the most common microdeletion syndrome in humans. The presence of learning difficulty is reported in the majority of individuals with 22q11DS, but there is considerable heterogeneity in cognitive and educational profiles and in the age-related changes. METHOD: Verbal, non-verbal and spatial abilities, and educational attainment of 18 children and adolescents with 22q11DS were assessed at two time points 5 years apart. RESULTS: There was a decline in full-scale IQ, with a sharper decline in verbal than non-verbal skills, whereas spatial abili

Probabilistic reinforcement learning abnormalities and their correlates in adolescent bipolar disorders.

Theoretical models of bipolar disorders (BD) posit core deficits in reward system function. However, specifying which among the multiple reward system's neurobehavioral processes are abnormal in BD is necessary to develop appropriately targeted interventions. Research on probabilistic-reinforcement learning deficits in BD is limited, particularly during adolescence, a period of significant neurodevelopmental changes in the reward system. The present study investigated probabilistic-reinforcement learning, using a probabilistic selection task (PST), and its correlates, using self-reported rewar

Accelerated Cognitive Decline in Late Life Depression: The Role of Amyloid-β, Cortico-Limbic Volume, and White Matter Hyperintensities.

OBJECTIVES: Late life depression (LLD) is associated with cognitive impairment and dementia, but studies of cognitive decline in LLD have been confounded by underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD). We evaluated longitudinal cognition in LLD against nondepressed (ND) older adults with equivalent AD risk and pathology and assessed relative contributions of clinical and neuroimaging characteristics to cognitive change. DESIGN: Longitudinal. SETTING: Outpatient psychiatry program. PARTICIPANTS: Participants (120 LLD, 240 ND) were matched on demographics, global cognition, mild cognitive impairment

The effect of psychiatric co-morbidity on cognitive functioning in a population-based sample of depressed young adults.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric co-morbidity is often inadequately controlled for in studies on cognitive functioning in depression. Our recent study established no major deficits in cognition among young adults with a history of pure unipolar depression. The present study extends our previous work by examining the effects of psychiatric co-morbidity and other disorder characteristics on depression-related cognitive functioning. METHOD: Performance in verbal and visual short-term memory, verbal long-term memory and learning, attention, processing speed, and executive functioning was compared between

Early signs of cognitive deficits among human immunodeficiency virus-positive hemophiliacs.

A total of 181 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive hemophiliacs and 28 hemophilic controls were evaluated by psychometric tests and by electroencephalogram (EEG). Patients were classified from stages 1-6 according to the immunological criteria of the Walter Reed staging system. Statistical analysis of psychometric data showed an effect of the stage of the disease on test performances, indicating a decline in attention, accumulation of perceptual interferences, decline in visuoperceptual speed and visuomotor response speed and reduced verbal memory performance, especially in stage 6

Relief and blunted defensive conditioned responses in girls with non-suicidal self-injury behaviors.

Relief is a positive emotional state that arises following the cessation of painful stimuli. Adolescents with mental health problems frequently engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). NSSI has for long been postulated as strategy for relieving intense aversive emotions. Although NSSI is hypothesized to result from a learning process, experimental evidence remains scarce. In this study, we tested whether adolescent patients suffering from NSSI have enhanced relief-learning as compared to healthy adolescents. Fifty-five girls underwent classical conditioning during which one shape (conditione

"Nobody Here Likes Her"-The Impact of Parental Verbal Threat Information on Children's Fear of Strangers.

Parental verbal threat (vs. safety) information about strangers may induce fears of these strangers in adolescents. In this multi-method experimental study, utilizing a within-subject design, parents provided standardized verbal threat or safety information to their offspring (N = 77, Mage = 11.62 years, 42 girls) regarding two strangers in the lab. We also explored whether the impact of parental verbal threat information differs depending on the social anxiety levels of parents or fearful temperaments of adolescents. Adolescent's fear of strangers during social interaction tasks was assessed

Neuropsychological outcomes of traumatic brain injury and substance abuse in a New Zealand prison population.

Fifty subjects with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or substance use, completed neuropsychological measures of short and long term verbal and visual memory, information processing, motor speed and co-ordination, executive functioning, and malingering. All subjects performed below norms on tests of verbal memory and verbal abstract thinking, but overall no differences were found due to either severity of TBI or level of substance use. Maori subjects obtained the lowest scores on tests of verbal ability, but also reported higher rates of TBI and substance use, which is presumed to

[Deficit of verbal recall caused by left dorso-lateral thalamic infarction].

A case of amnesia with preferential disorder of verbal recall, associated to a limited infarct of the left superior, external and anterior thalamus, is reported. This lesion involved the anterior and middle dorso-lateral nuclei and the centrolateral nucleus, sparing most of the structures classically incriminated in diencephalic amnesia. At the initial stage, the patient presented discrete language impairment and severe deficit of semantic processing, which later recovered. At the late stage, the anterograde and retrograde amnesia principally concerned the recall of verbal information used in

Selective category and modality effects in deep dyslexia.

We report a patient (FBI) in whom a category specific deep dyslexia was demonstrated. The patient was globally dysphasic with dyslexia and dysgraphia, and his dyslexic syndrome was characterised by a dramatic loss of phonological processing together with a partial loss of whole word reading. In the context of an overall poor level of reading accuracy, concrete words were read better than abstract words. Within this concrete word vocabulary, living items were read more accurately that non-living items. Perhaps most strikingly, he also had a remarkably preserved written proper noun vocabulary. A

Effects of risperidone/paliperidone versus placebo on cognitive functioning over the first 6 months of treatment for psychotic disorder: secondary analysis of a triple-blind randomised clinical trial.

The drivers of cognitive change following first-episode psychosis remain poorly understood. Evidence regarding the role of antipsychotic medication is primarily based on naturalistic studies or clinical trials without a placebo arm, making it difficult to disentangle illness from medication effects. A secondary analysis of a randomised, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial, where antipsychotic-naive patients with first-episode psychotic disorder were allocated to receive risperidone/paliperidone or matched placebo plus intensive psychosocial therapy for 6 months was conducted. A healthy cont

Neurocognitive Profiles of Pediatric Patients with ESES, Generalized Epilepsy, or Focal Epilepsy.

To date, the neurocognitive profile and comorbid psychiatric risks associated with ESES, a syndrome that commonly coincides with a seizure disorder, in contrast to generalized or partial/focal epilepsy without ESES remains unclear. Accordingly, this preliminary study aimed to characterize the neurocognitive differences across pediatric patients with ESES, generalized or focal epilepsy, and risk for comorbid diagnoses (mood disorder, autism, intellectual disability, learning disability, ADHD). We included data from a total of 79 pediatric patients, including those with recently diagnosed ESES (
