Amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition and Aβ-induced neurodegeneration appear in the retina and retinorecipient areas in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although these Aβ-related changes in the retina cause damage to the visual functions, no studies have yet revealed the alterations in the visual pathways of AD. Therefore, we investigated the alterations of visual circuits in the AD mouse model using anterograde tracer cholera toxin β subunits (CTβ). Moreover, we investigated the Aβ accumulation in the retina and retinorecipient areas and the neuronal loss, and synaptic degeneration in retin

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) can cause retinal thinning among persons with MS with optic neuritis (MS-ON). Macular xanthophylls are carotenoids that comprise the macular pigment, filtering blue light and countering photo-oxidation. However, macular xanthophyll status and its implications for markers of neuroaxonal degeneration have not been examined in MS.
OBJECTIVES: This study characterized differences in macular and serum xanthophylls, and retinal morphometry [retinal nerve fiber layer thickness at the macular (mRNFL) and optic disc (odRNFL) and total macular volume (TMV)] in indivi

PURPOSE: To analyze the visual outcomes following chemotherapy for optic pathway glioma in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 58 children with optic pathway glioma between 2003 and 2019. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at diagnosis and at the last follow-up visit were analyzed. Correlation tests were performed to determine whether the final BCVA was predicted by the initial BCVA, initial Dodge stage, or retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness stability. The first-line chemotherapy regimen included vincristine plus carboplatin (2003

OBJECTIVE: To study if the thalamic lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) is affected in multiple sclerosis (MS) due to anterograde degeneration from optic neuritis (ON) or retrograde degeneration from optic radiation (OR) pathology, and if this is relevant for visual function.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, LGN volume of 34 patients with relapsing-remitting MS and 33 matched healthy controls (HC) was assessed on MRI using atlas-based automated segmentation (MAGeT). ON history, thickness of the ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL), OR lesion volume, and fractional anisotropy (FA)

OBJECTIVE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, high-resolution imaging technique that was suggested to be a powerful biomarker of neurodegeneration. The objective of our study is to assess the pattern of retinal OCT changes in patients with visual pathway tumors.
METHODS: A prospective clinical study was conducted and patients with single cerebral tumors with potential of compression on the visual pathway were included. Patients with multiple and/or metastatic tumors were excluded. Each patient underwent a neurosurgical and ophthalmologic evaluation, cranial-cerebral magnetic

Increasing evidence shows that thinner retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL), assessed on optical coherence tomography (OCT), are reflecting global brain atrophy. Yet, little is known on the relation of these layers with specific brain regions. Using voxel-based analysis, we aimed to unravel specific brain regions associated with these retinal layers. We included 2,235 persons (mean age: 67.3 years, 55% women) from the Rotterdam Study (2007-2012) who had gradable retinal OCT images and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, including diffusion tensor (DT) imagin

BACKGROUND: The optic nerve is frequently injured in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, resulting in visual dysfunction, which may be reflected by measures distant from the site of injury.
OBJECTIVE: To determine how retinal nerve fiber layer as a measure of axonal health, and macular volume as a measure of neuronal health are related to changes in myelin water fraction in the optic radiations of multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica participants with and without optic neuritis and compared to healthy controls.
METHODS: 12 healthy controls, 42 multiple sclerosis (16 with opti

Most of the existing methods for diagnosing glaucoma analyze the eye with a main focus on the retina, despite the transsynaptic nature of the fiber degeneration caused by glaucoma. Thus, they ignore a significant part of the visual system represented by the visual pathway in the brain. The advances in neuroimaging, especially diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), enable the identification and characterization of white matter fibers. In this work, we propose a system based on DTI analysis of the visual pathway fibers in the optic radiation for detecting and discriminating different glaucoma entities.

In recent years, theories about the anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin D in demyelinating disease have been well substantiated by human studies examining relapse reduction, MRI lesion activity and risk of MS conversion. However, the evidence that vitamin D may protect against neurodegeneration has not been established as of yet, and comes with the challenges of a manageable target over a manageable time period. Such challenges might be overcome by the anterior visual pathway (AVP) model of the central nervous system, which allows the non-invasive study (e.g. imaging, electrophysiology and

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the role of pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (pVEPs) in the screening and monitoring of optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) in children with and without neurofibromatosis type 1.
METHODS: A review of the English literature published between 1980 and 2012 was performed, with comparison of results of retro- and prospective studies.
RESULTS: Pattern reversal VEPs have a high sensitivity (85.7-100 %) for the diagnosis of OPGs, moreover they are safe and cost-effective. Conversely, they have a low specificity (43-83 %) and are not widely availa

PURPOSE: To analyze the axonal architecture of the optic nerve in patients with normal-pressure glaucoma and determine whether these parameters correlate with the disease severity.
METHODS: Using magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging (1.5-Tesla unit) and diffusion tensor (DT) MRI, we measured the optic nerve diameter, optic chiasm height and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) volume in patients with normal-pressure glaucoma and an age-matched control group. The retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFL) was determined by optical coherence tomography (OCT).
RESULTS: The study included 30 patients wi

In six patients with ischemic lesions of the visual pathways above the lateral geniculate body, the pupil light reflex was investigated under perimetric conditions. The size of the lesions--in four cases caused by lateralized cerebral infarction, in two cases by complicated migraine attacks--was certified by neurological examination and by angiography or computerized tomography respectively. The recordings were done with a portable pupillograph measuring the infrared light reflected from the iris. A Tübinger perimeter served as stimulator. All patients except one, whose visual fields recovered

The author describes the possibilities of x-ray examination of the extra- and intracranial parts of the visual pathway. After a survey of pneumatography of the orbit a comparison with pneumoencephalography and tomodensitometry (EMI-scanner) is made. Tomodensitometry must be regarded as a significant advance in neuroradiological examination because it is not dangerous and easy to perform. The indications for complementary pneumoencephalography are discussed in detail.

(1) Pulfrich's pendulum has been developed as a method for detecting abnormal delay in the visual pathway of patients with suspected multiple sclerosis. (2) Forty-one normal subjects gave a mean interocular latency difference of 2-4 +/- 1-8 msec on Pulfrich's pendulum. This mean +2 SD (6 msec) was taken as the limit of normal interocular latency difference by this method. (3) The test was assessed on 58 patients. Eighteen of these had definite multiple sclerosis, 9 had probable multiple sclerosis, and 8 had possible multiple sclerosis, according to clinical criteria. The remaining 23 patients
