The role of social schema in the experience of auditory hallucinations: a systematic review and a proposal for the inclusion of social schema in a cognitive behavioural model of voice hearing.

UNLABELLED: The interpersonal nature of the voice-hearing experience has been highlighted in recent studies investigating whether social processes (or 'schemas') that guide interpersonal interactions also govern the relationship between voice hearer and voice. A systematic literature review of relevant studies was undertaken, including those that investigated how social processes interact with appraisals of voices, as well as affective and behavioural responding to voices. The review included 13 studies published between 2000 and 2010. Two well-replicated findings emerged from the review. Firs

[Troubleshooting with difficult replacement of voice prostheses and a novel retrograde procedure].

The implantation of a voice prosthesis has become a standard procedure during a laryngectomy. A voice prostheses enables patients to develop speech shortly after surgery, which strongly improves rehabilitation and quality of life. The lifetime of a voice prosthesis is limited and highly variable due to different causes. A replacement is usually necessary several times a year and can easily been done in an outpatient setting with surface anesthesia. In some cases, replacing the prosthesis becomes difficult. This article will take a closer look at different reasons that can lead to difficulties i

Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises: aerodynamic and electroglottographic measurements in singers.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe changes in aerodynamic and electroglottographic (EGG) measures immediately after completing three semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case series. METHODS: Aerodynamic and EGG measurements were obtained before and immediately after performing three SOVTs (straw phonation, lip trill, and tongue trill) in four singers for prepost comparisons to evaluate laryngeal changes persisting beyond the execution of SOVTs. RESULTS: Mean air flow, sound pressure level, and EGG closed quotient tended to increase after c

Speech and voice rehabilitation in selected patients fitted with a bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA).

With the Birmingham osseointegrated implant programme there have been several patients with severe pre-lingual conductive hearing loss. The majority of these have been patients with Treacher Collins syndrome. There are characteristic features of speech and voice in those with long-standing conductive hearing loss. In addition, the associated abnormalities of jaw, teeth and palate may amplify the problem. There may be spontaneous improvement in features such as voice pitch, quality and intensity following the fitting of a BAHA. However, in those with a pre-lingual hearing impairment, speech the

Immediate effects of straw phonation in air or water on the laryngeal function and configuration of female speech-language pathology students visualised with strobovideolaryngoscopy: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A promising way to obtain vocal economy and efficiency is by semi-occluding the vocal tract while phonating. Current knowledge about the immediate effects of semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) phonation on the laryngeal function and configuration is based mainly on computer modelling or excised larynges studies. In in vivo SOVT studies, electroglottography (EGG) has been the most commonly used laryngeal outcome, showing contradictory results between studies. Therefore, exploring these aspects by direct visualisation of the human larynx during SOVT phonation using strobovideolaryngosc

Voice Changes in the Elderly.

The impact of aging is as inevitable in the larynx as on all biologic systems. The muscles of larynx have the potential to atrophy, the elastin fibers of lamina propria thin with age, and mucous production diminishes. As a result, vocal folds fail to approximate appropriately and the stress on once-robust vocal folds increases. These changes present as poor voice quality, vocal tension, tremor, and altered fundamental frequency. Rather than consider presbyphonia as an immutable diagnosis, we must see it as an opportunity to elevate our standard of care and set goals to work for therapeutic imp

The influence of kinesiotaping on the loosening of the laryngeal muscles in hyperfunctional dysphones.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperfunctional dysfunction is one of the most common functional dysphonia, cha-racterized by voice insufficiency with excessive tightening of the muscles inside and outside the larynx during phonation. To make the treatment process more effective, new ways of rehabilitation are constantly being sought and developed. The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of laryngotaping - an innovative method of taping around the larynx and neck muscles. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 10 patients with diagnosed hyperfunctional dysphonia participated in the study. Using the kinesiotaping p
