Near-complete phosphorus valorization from sewage sludge: Cost-effective co-production of vivianite and bioavailable detoxified hydrochar via a recyclable citric acid-mediated hydrothermal process.

Efficient phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge is bottlenecked by stable phosphorus-binding within complex organic-inorganic matrices. Conventional hydrothermal treatments suffer from limited P dissolution, inevitable re-fixation, poor hydrochar P-bioavailability, and heavy metal (HM) risks. This work proposes a novel, recyclable citric acid (CA)-mediated hydrothermal process. Relying on strong CA-mediated coordination and its synergistic effects with hydrothermal conditions and sludge components, this process achieves efficient phosphorus release and targeted speciation control while mitiga

Insights into the assistance of bacteria in digested wastewater pollutants removal by microalgae from the aspect of flow and mixing characteristics.

Photosynthetic symbiotic microorganisms (PSM, photosynthetic microalgae and heterotrophic bacteria) show great potential for the treatment of digested piggery wastewater (DPW). However, how bacterial metabolic activities affect substance exchange ability between microalgae and bacteria, and their subsequent impact on pollutant removal remains unclear. Thus, the flow characteristics, gas exchange, and mass mixing of PSM suspension were investigated using a hydrodynamic method. The findings demonstrated that the viscosity of the PSM increased to 1.09 mPa s due to the extracellular polymeric subs

Controlling phosphorus mobility in biosolids-amended soils: The role of phosphate mineralogy and P:Ca and P:Mg ratios in amendment performance.

Phosphorus (P) release from biosolids-amended soils poses risks to surface and groundwater quality, yet the controlling factors remain insufficiently quantified. This study compared biosolids from two wastewater treatment plants in South Florida and North Florida to identify chemical indicators of P stability and evaluate amendment strategies for reducing P losses. Controlled batch experiments were conducted in triplicate using calcium- and aluminum-based drinking water treatment residuals (Ca-DWTR and Al-DWTR), biochars, and commercial blends. Biosolids differed in P release behavior, which w

Hybrid green wall - ozonation system for greywater and rainwater reclamation in a residential building: technical performance and social insights.

Growing water scarcity calls for sustainable and decentralized strategies to reduce demand for freshwater resources. Greywater reuse is a promising option, though concerns about pathogens and organic micropollutants (OMPs) necessitate effective treatment. This study evaluates a full-scale system integrating a green wall with ozonation, installed on a residential building in Sant Quirze del Vallès (Barcelona, Spain), for greywater and rainwater treatment and reuse in toilet flushing. Over one year, the green wall achieved high removal of COD (84%), BOD5 (96%), TOC (87%), TSS (94%), and ammonium

A Hybrid Data-Driven Intensified Mechanistic Modeling Framework for Accurate and Reliable Wastewater Treatment Process Simulation and Control.

Computational modeling guides the wastewater treatment (WWT) design. However, nonlinearities, stochastic influent fluctuations, and complex microbial interactions challenge model predictive accuracy and robustness. Mechanistic models lack fidelity under dynamic conditions due to static parametrization. Data-driven models have emerged to capture such dynamics, but their unconstrained flexibility can produce unstable predictions, which are unacceptable in high-stakes WWT. This study proposes a hybrid data-driven intensified mechanistic modeling (HyDIM) framework, which functionalizes kinetic par

Thermal treatment-regulated decomposition and phase transformation of soda residue: product construction and mechanism of simultaneous removal of Cd2+ and Pb2+ from wastewater.

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are recognized as priority pollutants owing to their high toxicity and environmental persistence. Concurrently, soda residue (SR), a by-product of the ammonia-soda process, is largely stockpiled due to ineffective utilization, posing significant environmental challenges. This study employs a "waste-treating-waste" strategy, achieving directional conversion of SR into an effective heavy metal removal material through controlled thermal treatment. The thermal transformation behavior of SR was systematically investigated using TG-DTG, XRF, XRD, and QXRD techniques, reve

Viral suppression constrains environmentally stimulated microbial methylmercury production in wastewater treatment plants.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are hotspots for neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) production. While the bottom-up environmental drivers of mercury (Hg) methylation are well-documented, the role of top-down viral predation remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the interaction between environmental stimulation and viral predation in regulating MeHg production across four geographically distinct WWTPs. Field surveys revealed that while total and dissolved Hg concentrations decreased consistently throughout the treatment process, both total and dissolved MeHg peaked in the biological

Distinct roles of granules and flocs in aerobic granular sludge processes.

Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) is an innovative and efficient biotechnology for wastewater treatment that has been successfully applied on full-scale worldwide. Full-scale municipal AGS systems typically contain both granular sludge (granules) and flocculent sludge (flocs). Studies on the different roles of granules and flocs remain limited. In this study, a laboratory-scale AGS reactor fed with complex synthetic wastewater was operated to simulate full-scale AGS systems and to study the different functional roles of granules and flocs. The laboratory reactor achieved a coexistence of granules

Effect of electrode coupling and external circuit connection variations on pollutant removal with biochar-packed constructed wetlands: sequential loading fluctuations.

Six biochar media and Canna indica plant-based constrfigucted wetlands were developed to treat municipal wastewater; these systems differed in terms of electrode coupling and external circuit configurations. The hydraulic dosing included sequential constant (stable period) and rapid load shifting cycles (unstable period), which were artificially controlled and repeated. The mean percentages of organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and coliform removal ranged from 89 to 98%, 47 to 65%, 82 to 90%, and 41 to 90%, respectively, in both normal (without electrode coupling) and electrode-dependent co

Attached microalgae-simulated plants enhanced multiple-pollutant removal in a tidal flow constructed wetland: quantified efficiencies, pathways, and biological mechanisms.

Active microalgae have great potential for releasing organic carbon and oxygen, which can be utilized as electron donors/acceptors, to enhance pollutant removal in constructed wetlands (CWs). In this study, we proposed a tidal flow CW with attached microalgae-simulated plants (AMSP) and verified the superiorities and mechanisms of microalgae's contribution to pollutant removal. The CWs with AMSP achieved high removal efficiencies for NH4N (87.6 %), TN (62.7 %), TP (56.4 %), and COD (98.8 %), which were 45.7 %, 16.3 %, and 20.5 % higher for NH4N, TN, and TP compared with those without AMSP. Does resource recovery and utilization improve environmental and economic performance of rural wastewater treatment plants? A case study in Xiamen, China.

Wastewater treatment (WWT) has been recognized as a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Rural WWT often lags behind urban areas due to insufficient infrastructure construction and lack of funding to maintain operation. Selection of optimal WWT technologies in rural areas requires that environmental impacts and costs are traded-off across the entire lifecycle, including the construction, operation, and demolition phases. This study compared the lifecycle environmental impacts of different rural WWT technologies, incorporating both positive and negative externalities into the cost-benefit

Removal of contaminants from wastewater using the bivalve Corbicula fluminea - Comparative assessment of biofiltration and biosorption.

Bivalves, such as Corbicula fluminea, and their milled shells have been shown to efficiently remove some compounds from the water, but their ability to remove contaminants of emerging concern, namely pharmaceuticals and stimulants, remains largely unknown. Hence, this study aimed to compare the efficiency of C. fluminea and the corresponding milled shells for removal of 9 common wastewater contaminants at concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 mg.L-1, further appraising the entailed ecotoxicity variation. After 24 h, clams removed mainly fluoxetine (≥91 %) and, to a moderate extent, paracetamol (≥26 %)

A review-based estimation of GHG emissions of China's wastewater management system.

Under China's "Dual Carbon Goal", the wastewater treatment system plays a crucial role in the country's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, a lack of baseline emissions data poses challenges for decarbonization efforts. This study aims to profile and diagnose the GHG emissions of China's entire wastewater system and identify key contributing factors. Our findings show that China's wastewater system, including wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and septic tanks, is responsible for significant emissions, with baseline estimates at 108.26 ± 47.37 Mt CO2-eq/a. Septic tanks

Odor removal via high-speed biofiltration in headwork operations of wastewater treatment plants.

Biofiltration process has proved being an effective, low-cost, and environmental friendly method to remove odor pollution in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Despite its assets, this technology is often limited due to the required surface area for biofilters. The main aim of this study was to study the biofiltration of foul air at high velocities (or low empty bed retention time, EBRT) as an option to reduce the surface area requirement of the deodorization process. To do so, a pilot-scale biofilter was built and operated with foul air coming from the headworks of a WWTP located at Cannes

Enrichment and application of sewer-derived aerobic methanotrophs to enhance gaseous methane removal in sewers.

Methane emission from sewer systems persists as a dual environmental threat, combining explosion risks with potent greenhouse gas impacts. Current methane removal strategies have primarily targeted biofilm and wastewater phases by chemical dosing; however, microbial adaptation and fluctuating water quality often reduce the control efficiency, incurring high chemical costs. Here we propose and demonstrate a novel microbial approach that utilizes aerobic methanotrophs for direct gaseous methane oxidation. Sewer-derived microbes was discovered to exhibit a high methane oxidation capacity of 0.30

Phosphorus Recovery From Wastewater Through Anaerobic Digestion Under Sub-Supersaturation Conditions.

Unlike conventional phosphorus (P) recovery methods that rely on high P concentrations and/or chemical additives, this study presents a cost-effective approach for inducing the precipitation of phosphate salts by utilizing carefully selected feedstocks and optimal operating conditions. To test the feasibility of this approach, three 1.0-L upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were operated, fed with three types of synthetic feeds, consisting of glucose + sodium acetate (NaAc), glucose + bovine serum albumin (BSA), and glucose + urea as the organic matter sources. All the organic comp

Facile conversion and eco-friendly carbon-bentonite nano sheets synthesis from waste PET bottles and application in Cr6+ removal from aqueous solution.

Plastics are extensively utilised in all aspects of life owing to their durability and low price. Global production of polyethylene and polypropylene (the most common microplastics in soil and water) is increasing at an annual rate of approximately 7%. However, owing to the weak plastic natural degradation, low recycling rate, and potential ecological and health risks, the environmental issues brought on by plastic accumulation in marine and land environments have garnered international attention. To protect the environment, waste minimisation, reuse, and recycling processes should be develope

Analysis and calculation of scour critical velocity of suspended particles in a storm sewer.

The suspended particles in storm sewer can be easily washed away and migrated. However, few studies analyzed the scouring state of suspended particles in pipelines, and also, there was a lack of quantitative calculation. This study simulated the scouring process of suspended particles in a storm sewer with different pipe materials, and mathematical models were built for the scour critical velocity. The results showed that with the increase of particle size, density and the roughness of the pipe wall, the scour resistance of suspended particles increased, and the scouring rate decreased; theref

Application of waste iron in wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) wastewater treatment.

The wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) procedure results in wastewater containing a complex mixture of pollutants, including heavy metals and organic compounds, which are hardly degradable and pose significant environmental challenges. Addressing this issue, the proposed approach, incorporating waste iron shavings as a heterocatalyst within a modified Fenton process, represents a sustainable and effective solution for contaminants degrading in WFGD wastewater. Furthermore, this study aligns with the Best Available Techniques (BAT) regulations by meeting the requirement for compound oxidation-
