Workplace violence against doctors: Characteristics, risk factors, and mitigation strategies.

Workplace violence is a major occupational issue concerning doctors that has a significant impact on their physical and psychological well-being. This ultimately affects the health care services of the country. Patient-led episodes of verbal violence are more prevalent in Asian countries, especially in the emergency department, psychiatric wards, and intensive care units, mostly faced by junior doctors and residents. Some common precursors of violence against doctors are patients and their attendants' dissatisfaction and low impulse control, poor administration, miscommunication, infrastructur

Latent classes of caregiver relationships with patients: Workplace violence implications.

The bonds and relationships that direct care workers in the home setting (DCWHs) develop with their elderly or disabled home care patients may put them at risk for patient violence. This study used a data-driven approach, latent class analysis, to identify distinct underlying patterns of DCWH-patient relationships and then assessed how DCWH-patient class membership was associated with patient violence. This study analyzed survey data obtained from 964 DCWHs working in two not-for-profit home care agencies. Four classes of DCWH-patient relationships emerged: Non-familial (40% of the sample), Ov

Workplace drug testing in Italy: findings about second-stage testing.

Workplace Drug Testing (WDT) in Italy includes two levels of monitoring: a first stage concerning drug testing on urine samples and a second involving both urine and hair analysis. The second stage is performed only on workers who tested positive at the first level. We analyzed urine and hair specimens from 120 workers undergoing second-level testing between 2009 and 2012. Eighty percent of them had tested positive for cannabinoids during the first level analysis, and 15.8% for cocaine. Both urine and hair samples were analyzed in order to find the following drugs of abuse: amphetamines, bupre

Why renal nurses cope so well with their workplace stressors.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found significant stressors experienced by nurses working in haemodialysis units yet renal nurses appear to report less burnout than other nurses. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to undertake an inductive process to better understand the stressors and the coping strategies used by renal nurses that may lead to resilience. METHOD: Sixteen haemodialysis nurses from a metropolitan Australian hospital and two satellite units participated in open-ended interviews. Data were analysed from a grounded theory methodology. Measures of burnout and resilience were also obta

Adding insult to injury: workplace injury in English professional football.

Sociologists studying the topic of workplace injury have neglected professional athletes despite the fact that, for such employees, remaining 'active' at work is of paramount importance. This study involved semi-structured interviews with 47 current and former male professional footballers who all had careers in the English professional football leagues. The interviews focused on the players' experiences of injury and rehabilitation and their relationships with club managers, physiotherapists and doctors. The object of this empirical article concerns an examination of how professional football

Workplace bullying in nursing: towards a more critical organisational perspective.

Workplace bullying is a significant issue confronting the nursing profession. Bullying in nursing is frequently described in terms of 'oppressed group' behaviour or 'horizontal violence'. It is proposed that the use of 'oppressed group' behaviour theory has fostered only a partial understanding of the phenomenon in nursing. It is suggested that the continued use of 'oppressed group' behaviour as the major means for understanding bullying in nursing places a flawed emphasis on bullying as a phenomenon that exists only among nurses, rather than considering it within the broader organisational co

Laughter-inducing Interventions for Workplace Stress Management: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Mental health at work is a public health priority. Previous studies in the general population suggest that laughter-inducing interventions may support mental health. METHODS: A structured search strategy was applied to 6 databases. Studies assessing laughter-inducing interventions among workers using interventional designs were included. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted

From exclusion to inclusion: How spiritual leadership shapes workplace relationships.

BackgroundWorkplace ostracism is a negative social stressor that is associated with psychological distress, work stress, and poor employee well-being. Additionally, job social s
