A randomized controlled trial of expressive writing in breast cancer survivors with lymphedema.

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer survivors who develop lymphedema report poorer quality of life (QoL) than those without lymphedema. Expressive writing is a potential intervention to address QoL. DESIGN: Adult women (N = 107) with breast cancer and chronic Stage II lymphedema were randomised to writing about thoughts and feelings specific to lymphedema and its treatment (intervention) or about daily activities (control) for four, 20-min sessions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Outcome measures were several indicators of QoL assessed at baseline, one, three, and six months post-intervention (total scores and

A preliminary study of the neuroanatomical correlates of primary writing tremor: role of cerebellum.

INTRODUCTION: To explore the neuroanatomical correlates of primary writing tremor (PWT) and the role of cerebellum, using advanced structural neuroimaging. Till date, there are no studies exploring the gray and white matter changes using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in PWT. METHODS: Ten male patients with PWT were evaluated clinically and with magnetic resonance imaging. VBM and DTI images of patients were compared with that of 10 healthy male subjects. Spatially unbiased infra-tentorial template (SUIT) analysis was done to investigate the alterations of ce

From Materia Medica to the Pharmacopoeia: Challenges of Writing the History of Drugs in India.

Historians of indigenous medicine in colonial India have looked more closely at the changes, reinventions and reformulations of institutions of Ayurveda and Unani than at the cognitive content of the drugs themselves. The few historians who have examined the changing content of indigenous medicines have conceptualised the creation of materia medica of Indian drugs through two tropes: one of circulation (of specific drugs) through epistemological and geographic boundaries and the second, of marginalisation of certain other drugs either through a lack of textual legitimacy or the lack of the new

The Influence of Spelling Ability on Vocabulary Choices When Writing for Children With Dyslexia.

Spelling is a prerequisite to expressing vocabulary in writing. Research has shown that children with dyslexia are hesitant spellers when composing. This study aimed to determine whether the hesitant spelling of children with dyslexia, evidenced by frequent pausing, affects vocabulary choices when writing. A total of 31 children with dyslexia, mean age 9 years, were compared to typically developing groups of children: the first matched by age, the second by spelling ability. Oral vocabulary was measured and children completed a written and verbal compositional task. Lexical diversity compariso

Isolated inability to write cursively after transient ischemic attack (TIA).

OBJECTIVE: To examine the different aspects of language and its representation in the brain. BACKGROUND: Apractic agraphia, a form of mechanical agraphia, is produced by lesions in the left superior parietal lobe. However, little is known about the dissociation between allographic level representations for cursive writing and printing. METHOD: A 78-year-old right-handed patient with a history of transient ischemic attack was evaluated by interview, neurologic and neuropsychiatric examination, neuropsychologic testing, speech and language evaluation, and functional neuroimaging (single photon

Tremor magnitude: a single index to assess writing and drawing in essential tremor.

Hand tremor often causes disability in patients with essential tremor (ET). Aim of the study was to investigate whether tremor magnitude, a new single quantitative score obtained from digital tablet recordings of writing and drawing, is able to adequately reflect disability in ET patients. Mean tremor magnitude values showed significant difference between 14 ET patients and 14 healthy age matched controls (p<0.0001). The tremor magnitude values showed significant correlation with standard methods of clinical assessment (p<0.01). We present tremor magnitude as an index that reflects disability

Abortion practice in the northeast Caribbean: "Just write down stomach pain".

Small island exigencies and a legacy of colonial jurisprudence set the stage for this three-year study in 2001-2003 of abortion practice on several islands of the northeast Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua, St Kitts, St Martin and Sint Maarten. Based on in-depth interviews with 26 physicians, 16 of whom were performing abortions, it found that licensed physicians are routinely providing abortions in contravention of the law, and that those services, tolerated by governments and legitimised by European norms, are clearly the mainstay of abortion care on these islands. Medical abortion was being use

Journal writing as a complementary therapy for reactive depression: a rehabilitation teaching program.

Brief, recurrent, reactive, or situational depression is a common and costly comorbidity that affects chronically ill patients and their family members. This article describes a program that teaches those individuals how to monitor and cope with symptoms of depression by writing daily in a journal. Twenty patients and family members attended teaching sessions at which videotaped scenes of other patients managing symptoms of depression were shown. After viewing the six scenes, participants wrote about their reactions to each scene and listed the emotions they had experienced that were similar t

Hypnotizability, the dissociative experiences scale, HGSHS: A amnesia, and automatic writing: is there an association?

The present study examined whether participants (N = 112) selected on the basis of high and low dissociative ability (Dissociative Experiences Scale [DES]; Bernstein & Putnam, 1986), high and low/simulating hypnotizability (Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A [HGSHS:A]; Shor & Orne, 1962), and past performance on the HGSHS:A amnesia item differentially passed an automatic writing suggestion administered during a follow-up experiment. Results from a loglinear analysis supported a single main effect for hypnotizability. Low hypnotizable, simulating participants were more than

Praxis and writing of the left hand may be served by different callosal pathways.

A patient who had damage to the leftward outflow of the body of the corpus callosum experienced the development of agraphia, but not apraxia, of the left hand. In another case reported recently, a similar lesion produced the same intriguing dissociation. We suggest that the principal interhemispheric controls for praxis and for writing of the left hand operate at different levels of the corpus callosum.

Left Write Hook: proof of concept for a survivor-designed, and peer-led programme incorporating expressive writing and boxing to support mental health in adult survivors of child sexual abuse.

Background: Existing approaches to supporting victim-survivors (herein referred to as 'survivors') of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are resource-intensive and traditionally led by mental health professionals. Left Write Hook (LWH) is a novel survivor-designed, peer-led programme for survivors of CSA. By combining trauma-related expressive writing and non-contact, trauma-informed boxing, the programme promotes self-empowerment and supports survivors to rewrite their stories and reclaim their bodies. Objective: This study sought to demonstrate proof of concept for LWH as an intervention to enhance

Strategies and mechanisms of precision genome engineering: From gene editing to genome writing.

Genomic manipulation has advanced from stochastic nuclease-mediated disruption toward programmable, deterministic precision. Early clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) strategies enabled targeted mutagenesis through double-strand breaks; however, their therapeutic application is limited by genotoxicity, chromosomal instability, and dependence on endogenous repair pathways that are difficult to predict. In this review, we examined the transition from gene editing to genome writing, an approach that decouples genomic modification from host repair pathways to better

Joule-Heated direct writing: an electrically-driven additive manufacturing paradigm for space fabrication.

The imperative for in-space manufacturing drives the development of compact, energy-efficient metal additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. This work introduces and investigates a novel Joule-Heating Additive Manufacturing (JHAM) process, inspired by the Joule-Lenz effect, for the direct writing of metallic structures. A fully coupled thermal-electrical-structural finite element model is developed to simulate the multilayer deposition of 304 stainless steel wire, elucidating the unique "tusk-shaped" temperature field evolution and the effects of current, speed, and contact width. Harnessing ChatGPT for SBA question writing: a novel approach to medical student learning.

The introduction of the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) requires UK medical graduates to pass two 100-item single best answer (SBA) question papers. Access to high-quality question banks is often restricted by expensive paywalls, evolving guidelines, and institutional safeguarding of questions for future assessments. This limits students' ability to practice exam-style questions and develop their clinical reasoning.During this study, two medical students used ChatGPT to produce a bank of 100 SBA questions which were representative of those used in the MLA. Questions were analysed and revise

Motor network reorganization associated with rTMS-induced writing improvement in writer's cramp dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp (WC) dystonia is an involuntary movement disorder with distributed abnormalities in the brain's motor network. Prior studies established the potential for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to either premotor cortex (PMC) or primary somatosensory cortex (PSC) to modify symptoms. However, clinical effects have been modest with limited understanding of the neural mechanisms hindering therapeutic advancement of this promising approach. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the motor network effects of rTMS in WC that correspond with behavioral effi
