The hodology of hallucinations.

The hodotopic framework is a recent revision of Geschwind's disconnection paradigm incorporating advances in functional and white matter imaging. Its intention is to help clinico-pathological correlations across a range of neurological and psychiatric conditions and generate novel research questions. Here I consider hallucinations within this framework. The paper is divided into three parts. The first reviews the auditory and visual hallucination literature from the dual perspectives of dysfunction localised to specific brain regions (topological) and dysfunction related to connections between

Increased asymmetries in 2-deoxyglucose uptake in the brain of freely moving congenitally acallosal mice.

To investigate the role of the corpus callosum in the expression of functional brain asymmetries, we compared left and right uptake of [14C]2-deoxyglucose in 43 brain regions measured in 10 C57B1/6 mice with a normal corpus callosum and in 12 congenitally acallosal mice, after 45 min of free activity in a novel, large open-field arena. The metabolic patterns across the brain appeared to be similar in the two groups of mice, as well as the average direction of asymmetry in tracer incorporation, which was higher at right in most of the brain regions for both acallosals and controls. However, the

Functional EEG connectivity in infants associates with later restricted and repetitive behaviours in autism; a replication study.

We conducted a replication study of our prior report that increased alpha EEG connectivity at 14-months associates with later autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, and dimensional variation in restricted interests/repetitive behaviours. 143 infants at high and low familial risk for ASD watched dynamic videos of spinning toys and women singing nursery rhymes while high-density EEG was recorded. Alpha functional connectivity (7-8 Hz) was calculated using the debiased weighted phase lag index. The final sample with clean data included low-risk infants (N = 20), and high-risk infants who at 36

Polarity-independent effects of transcranial direct current stimulation over the bilateral opercular somatosensory region: a magnetoencephalography study.

The opercular somatosensory region (OP) plays an indispensable role in pain perception. In the present study, we investigated the neurophysiological effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the OP. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields following noxious intraepidermal electrical stimulation to the left index finger (pain-SEFs) were recorded before and after tDCS with a single-blind, sham-controlled, cross-over trial design. Three tDCS conditions of left anodal/right cathodal tDCS, left cathodal/right anodal tDCS (each, 2 mA, 12 min), and sham tDCS (2 mA, 15 s) were applied

Auditory cortical delta-entrainment interacts with oscillatory power in multiple fronto-parietal networks.

The timing of slow auditory cortical activity aligns to the rhythmic fluctuations in speech. This entrainment is considered to be a marker of the prosodic and syllabic encoding of speech, and has been shown to correlate with intelligibility. Yet, whether and how auditory cortical entrainment is influenced by the activity in other speech-relevant areas remains unknown. Using source-localized MEG data, we quantified the dependency of auditory entrainment on the state of oscillatory activity in fronto-parietal regions. We found that delta band entrainment interacted with the oscillatory activity

Proactive response inhibition abnormalities in the sensorimotor cortex of patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of response inhibition in patients with schizophrenia have focused on reactive inhibition tasks (e.g., stop-signal, go/no-go), primarily observing lateral prefrontal cortex abnormalities. However, recent studies suggest that purposeful and sustained (i.e., proactive) inhibition may also be affected in these patients. METHODS: Patients with chronic schizophrenia and healthy controls underwent fMRI while inhibiting motor responses during multisensory (audiovisual) stimulation. Resting state data were also collected. RESULTS: We included 37 patients with schizophren

Utility of multimodal evoked potentials study in neurofibromatosis type 1 of childhood.

A group of 21 children affected by neurofibromatosis type 1 has been investigated with the aim of studying multimodal (visual, brainstem auditory, and somatosensory) evoked potentials and their correlations with neurologic, electroencephalographic, and cranial magnetic resonance imaging. In the present series, cranial magnetic resonance imaging and evoked potentials were the most frequently abnormal instrumental tests. In approximately two thirds of the cases at least one of the evoked potentials (particularly visual and auditory evoked potentials) was compromised, always without clinical sign

Cranial computed tomography in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

A group of 202 patients with suspected, probable or definite multiple sclerosis was studied, using cranial computed tomography (CT). Atrophy alone, or in combination with white-matter and periventricular lucencies, and areas of contrast enhancement, were the main abnormal findings in 52% of patients. Atrophy was detected in 44% of patients, and its frequency and severity correlated with disease duration up to 10 years, age, and disease category. Atrophic changes in the brainstem and cerebellum could be correlated with clinical data more often than supratentorial atrophy could be correlated wit

The influence of colour and sound on neuronal activation during visual object naming.

This paper investigates how neuronal activation for naming photographs of objects is influenced by the addition of appropriate colour or sound. Behaviourally, both colour and sound are known to facilitate object recognition from visual form. However, previous functional imaging studies have shown inconsistent effects. For example, the addition of appropriate colour has been shown to reduce antero-medial temporal activation whereas the addition of sound has been shown to increase posterior superior temporal activation. Here we compared the effect of adding colour or sound cues in the same exper

Neuroticism related differences in the functional neuroanatomical correlates of multitasking. An fMRI study.

It is known that neuroticism impairs cognitive performance mostly in difficult tasks, but not so much in easier tasks. One pervasive situation of this type is multitasking, in which the combination of two simple tasks creates a highly demanding dual-task, and consequently high neurotics show higher dual-task costs than low neurotics. However, the functional neuroanatomical correlates of these additional performance impairments in high neurotics are unknown. To test for this, we assessed brain activity by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 17 low and 15 high neurotics whil

Insights from ERPs into attention during recovery after cerebellar stroke: a case report.

The role of the cerebellum in cognitive performance and attentional processes is a focus of research in recent years. We investigated the P300 component in a patient with a left posterior cerebellar ischemic stroke during both the acute phase and over 4 weeks of follow-up. After stroke, auditory event-related potentials showed a reduction in P3 amplitude, which appears to improve instead after 4 weeks of follow-up. These event-related potential findings could suggest a specific neural pattern of disruption in selective attention during the discrimination processes of the stimulus following a p

Sudden cortical hearing loss for speech: a case report.

A 35-yr-old male patient experienced a sudden loss of speech understanding due to a bilateral cerebrovascular disease. A detailed summary of audiological and neurological findings was presented. Findings indicated that the presence of Pa waves of the Middle Latency Response (MLR) may be a positive prognosis for improvement in hearing thresholds and speech understanding.

[Systematic hearing diagnosis in the premature infant. The Magdeburg model].

Almost 50% of all hearing disorders found in children are acquired. To a large extent these hearing disorders are caused by premature birth and can be detected by suitable screening. Two methods have proved useful for such testing: (1) Reflex audiometry with a standardized stimulus generator; and (2) bedside recording of brainstem potentials. Having tested the method of bedside recording of brainstem potentials we examined a group of 60 infants of varied body weights and otherwise normal findings as a "normal" control group. At all click intensities measured, premature infants weighing from 15

Hormonal contraceptives and EEG biomarkers for antidepressant treatment response in women.

BACKGROUND: Women are disproportionately affected by major depressive disorder (MDD). Widely used hormonal contraceptives are linked to depression and altered brain function, yet their unstudied impact on EEG-biomarkers of antidepressant response may confound efforts to develop biomarkers for women. METHODS: In 60 unmedicated premenopausal women with MDD: non-users (n = 25), combined oral contraceptive users (COC, n = 19), and progestin-only contraceptive users (POC, n = 16), we assess five EEG-biomarkers before eight weeks of 10-20 mg escitalopram: Alpha peak frequency (APF), Vigilance level

[Mechanisms of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells regulating learning and memory: a review].

Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) regulate multiple memory-related brain regions via subtype-specific projections. Rodent studies have demonstrated that the effects of light on learning and memory are highly dependent on light-dark cycle, wavelength, intensity, and duration, and are predominantly mediated by the ipRGC-dependent non-image-forming visual pathway. Multiple known and potential regulatory mechanisms have been uncovered to date. The ipRGC→SCNVIP pathway mediates photo-entrainment of circadian rhythms, and circadian rhythm alterations consequently modulate

Long-term effect of transcranial direct current stimulation in the treatment of chronic tinnitus: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is an intrusive and chronic illness affecting a significant portion of the population, decreasing affected individuals' quality of life and socioeconomic functioning. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulatory method utilizing weak electrical currents to elicit short and long-term central nervous system changes. Several studies have proven its effect on tinnitus. We aimed to broaden the knowledge and provide data on the effect and its retention. METHODS: In the randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled trial, 39 patients (active n
