OBJECTIVES: Clinical and radiographic evaluation of the premedicated direct pulp capping using formocresol (PDC) versus conventional direct pulp capping using calcium hydroxide (CDC) in human carious primary molars.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 120 vital primary molars with pinpoint exposure during caries removal in 84 patients aged 4-5 years were selected. In the PDC group (n = 60), 20% Buckley's formocresol solution, and in the CDC group (n = 60), calcium hydroxide powder were applied to the exposure sites followed by placement of zinc oxide-eugenol base. Teeth were restored with preformed stai

OBJECTIVES: To compare the success rate of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) pulpotomies in primary molars restored with a stainless steel crown (SSC) to that of teeth restored with amalgam and to evaluate the role of restoration failure in treatment outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: Pulpotomies were performed in 154 primary molars. Teeth were grouped according to pulpal exposure type as either mechanically or cariously exposed, with cariously exposed teeth further divided according to size of exposure site (pinpoint or larger than pinpoint). Seventy teeth were restored with amalgam and 84 with a SSC. Teeth

The purpose of the study was to assess the preferences of parents and children regarding amalgam or tooth colored restoration material for the children's teeth and some associated factors. One hundred and 24 children aged 4 to 12 years of age (Mean age-7.3 +/- 2.4) who needed at least 1 dental restoration were selected for the study. After a dental examination, the parents were asked to complete a questionnaire requesting demographic information, preference of restoration material for their children's teeth, and influencing factors. The children were then asked to answer questions on which mat

This study, part of a project that provided a baby cup to WIC children in Washington State, reports the feeding and brushing behaviors at six and twelve months and the influence of cultural and familial variables. Results show there are large differences in feeding and brushing practices among ethnic groups, i.e., Asian mothers reported the greatest reliance on the bottle at twelve months. Marital status was related to feeding practices, i.e., single women were more likely to put the baby to bed with a bottle at six and twelve months and were more likely to use a cup at twelve months. The pres

Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS1-6) is caused by mutations along the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway and features aortic aneurysms and craniofacial dysmorphology. Mutations that cause LDS can be found in the genes encoding transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) ligands (TGFB2 and TGFB3), receptors (TGFBR1 and TGFBR2), and signal transducers (SMAD2 and SMAD3). Variable enamel anomalies are seen in patients with LDS, but the most severe enamel defects with advanced attrition have been observed specifically in some patients with mutation in the TGFBR2 gene (LDS2). We used human spe

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by dysbiosis of the oral microflora, resulting in the destruction of periodontal tissue. Increasing evidence suggested that mesenchymal stem cell (MSCs) and exosomes derived from MSCs play a critical role in periodontal tissue regeneration. However, whether stem cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED)-secreted exosomes can improve the therapeutic potential of periodontitis is largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: Here, we aim to evaluate the effect of SHED-exosomes on inflammation, apoptosis and osteogenic differentiation in peri

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) continues to increase and is a major public health problem in Japan. In the present cross-sectional study, we examined the associations between LBW, preterm birth and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and the prevalence of dental caries in young Japanese children.
METHODS: Study subjects were 2,055 children aged 3 years. Data on birth conditions were obtained through the transcription by parents or guardians of the information from their maternal and child health handbook, in which the data were recorded by staff at the birth hospital or clinic, to our self-ad

An alternative source of mesenchymal stem cells has recently been discovered: dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), including deciduous teeth, which can thus comprise potential tools for regenerative medicine. DPSCs derive from the neural crest and are normally implicated in dentin homeostasis. The clinical application of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) involving DPSCs contains various limitations, such as high cost, low safety, and cell handling issues, as well as invasive sample collection procedures. Although MSCs implantation offers favorable outcomes on specific diseases, implanted MSCs cannot su

The aims of this study were to evaluate clinically and microbiologically the effects of two resin-modified glass-ionomer cements (RMGICs) used as liners after incomplete dentine caries removal and to identify Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus strains isolated from dentine samples, before and after indirect pulp treatment. Twenty-seven primary molars with deep carious lesions, but without signs and symptoms of irreversible pulpitis, were submitted to indirect pulp treatment. Treatment consisted of incomplete excavation of the carious dentine, application of one of the RMGICs (Vitr

All the papers presented at the conference are reviewed and comparisons are made with past beliefs on the topic. Early childhood caries (ECC) is a serious public health problem in disadvantaged communities in both developing and industrialized countries in which under-nutrition is common. ECC involves the maxillary primary incisors within months after their eruption and spreads rapidly to involve other primary teeth. The early implantation of mutans streptococci, the use of a feeding bottle containing sugary solutions and prolonged breast-feeding, especially at night, are important predisposin

Minor facial asymmetries that can be detected in newborn infants indicate that facial growth for this child will also be asymmetric. When practitioners observe a displacement of the mandible in temporary dentition it probably indicates the presence of asymmetric masticatory function and they should look for an inter-temporal axial asymmetry by tracing cutaneous landmarks in the vicinity of the external ears. If they find the possible presence of asymmetric remodeling of glenoid fossas, they have to anticipate future temporo-mandibular disorders. By using a measurement grid (Orthogrille type) p
