Morpho-functional features in adolescent males under iodine deficiency of the Saratov region.

An auxological study of 538 adolescent males (from 12 to 17) from different settlements of the Saratov region with various degrees of industrialization and iodine deficiency was carried out. All subjects have undergone an ultra-sound screening of thyroid volume to reveal the frequency of endemic goiter in each group. The results obtained during investigation showed the existence of deviations in the physical development of boys with goiter in skinfold thickness, body circumferences (chest, shoulder, and forearm), biacromial and biiliocristal diameters, transversal and sagittal chest diameters,

Bone mineralization and physical development of children.

A cross-sectional study of BMD and physical development values in children of various age-specific groups was carried out. In all, the study included 357 children (194 boys and 163 girls) aged from 5 to 16 years. The study did not include children with inherited or acquired diseases of the musculoskeletal system, chronic diseases of the liver or kidneys, diabetes, thyrotoxicosis or malabsorption syndrome or professional athletes. BMD values were estimated by dual X-ray absorbtiometry (DXA) of the lumbar part of the spine (L2-L4) using a "DPX-MD+" device equipped with a "child" software program

The hormonal basis of reconciliation in humans.

Developing effective behavioral and psychological mechanisms for coping with social stress was very important in human evolution because humans evolved as social beings. The aggressive and post-aggressive behavior of 30 boys aged 7-11 years was observed during free play in summer camp with the standard "post-conflict-matched control" method (de Waal and Yoshihara, 1983). The focals were the victims of the conflict. Saliva samples for examination of cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels were taken from each boy in 5 cases: 10 minutes after a conflict with and without reconciliation

Unpleasantness and physiological responses in using sanitary napkins.

This study investigated the physiological and psychological effects of sanitary napkins (SN) on women in hemorrhage treatment during the menstrual phase. Mesh and non-woven napkins were employed, and the effects were studied during the follicular and menstrual phases; mesh SN presented a higher textural surface-roughness. In both phases, the increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly dependent on the application intervals. The low-frequency component of systolic blood pressure variability significantly increased, while the salivary secretion rate decreased with the u

Non-invasive evaluation of face and motion perception in humans.

The neural mechanisms for the perception of face and motion were studied using psychophysical threshold measurements, event-related potentials (ERPs), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A face-specific ERP component, N170, was recorded over the posterior temporal cortex. Removal of the high-spatial-frequency components of the face altered the perception of familiar faces significantly, and familiarity can facilitate the cortico-cortical processing of facial perceptions. Similarly, the high-spatial-frequency components of the face seemed to be crucial for the recognition of facia

Controlling visually induced self-motion perception: effect of overlapping dynamic visual noise.

The effect of overlapping dynamic visual noise on visually induced self-motion perception (vection) by upward or downward optical flow was tested. The dynamic visual noise consisted of rapidly refreshed sparse random dots. Binocular disparity of the overlapping noise plane was varied. The results showed that when the noise was presented on the flow plane or on a plane farther than the flow plane, vection was totally impaired. This demonstrates that dynamic visual noise is functionally equivalent to static patterns in the vection suppression effect. A possibility of dynamic visual noise as a ve

Virtual reality environment design of managing both presence and virtual reality sickness.

It is difficult to design the Virtual Reality (VR) Environment which controls VR sickness and promotes presence. This is because the relationship between the user's susceptibility to VR sickness and a sense of presence, determined by velocity and visual angle of the visual information, involves a trade-off between the two. Then we propose the optimal value search system which computes efficiently the velocity and visual angle which control VR sickness and do not impair presence by taking account of a subject's characteristic. Under certain experimental conditions, some subjects showed serious

Effects of laughing and weeping on mood and heart rate variability.

We investigated the effects of laughing and weeping induced by watching comedy and tragedy videos on mood and autonomic nervous function. Ten healthy female subjects volunteered for the experiment. Chest electrocardiogram and respiration curve were recorded before, after, and during watching a comedy or a tragedy video. We also asked them to fill out profiles of mood states (POMS) to evaluate their mood states while watching videos. Autonomic nervous function was estimated by spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). All subjects more or less laughed and wept while watching comedy and

Ventilatory and gas exchange responses under spontaneous and fixed breathing modes during arm exercise.

To evaluate the difference of ventilatory and gas exchange response differences between arm and leg exercise, six healthy young men underwent ramp exercise testing at a rate of 15 W.min-1 on a cycle ergometer separately under either spontaneous (SPNT) or fixed (FIX) breathing modes, respectively. Controlled breathing was defined as a breathing frequency (fb; 30 breaths.min-1) which was neither equal to, nor a multiple of, cranking frequency (50 rev.min-1) to prevent coupling of locomotion and respiratory movement, i.e., so-called locomotor-respiratory coupling (LRC). Nutrient intake of highly competitive male and female collegiate karate players.

Nutrient intake of 29 male (M Group) and 16 female (F Group) highly competitive collegiate karate players were compared. The results were also compared with the daily energy expenditure (DEE), Japanese recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) or adequate dietary intakes (ADIs). Dietary information was collected using a 3-weekday diet record. Although the M Group showed significantly higher mean %RDAs or %ADIs in iron, vitamin B1, phosphorus, magnesium, and sodium than the F Group, many of the mean %RDAs or %ADIs were below RDAs or ADIs in both groups. The subjects who skipped meals tended to show

Quantitative EEG data and comprehensive ADL (Activities of Daily Living) evaluation of stroke survivors residing in the community.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that EEG values match other comprehensive activities of daily living (ADL) evaluations between stroke survivors and normal controls. Various functions related to ADL were examined by means of ADL assessments (Measurement of Competence in the Elderly Living at Home, Barthel Index, Stroke Impairment Assessment Set, time needed to walk 10 metres) and biosocial synchronization (the questionnaire on biosocial rhythms of daily living). EEG was undertaken using a computer-assisted portable EEG recorder. The power spectra were computed using

Effect of illuminance and color temperature on lowering of physiological activity.

To investigate how illuminance and color temperature in illumination affect the autonomic nervous system and central nervous system in conditions tending to lower physiological activity, and with an ordinary residential setting in mind, we performed an experiment on 8 healthy male subjects. The experimental conditions consisted of 4 conditions provided by a combination of 2 levels of color temperature (3000 K, 5000 K) and 2 levels of illuminance (30 lx, 150 lx). Physiological measurement was carried out during a process of 22 minutes of light exposure followed by 20 minutes of sleep in darknes

Anthropometric and biomechanical characteristics on body segments of Koreans.

This paper documents the physical measurements of the Korean population in order to construct a data base for ergonomic design. The dimension, volume, density, mass, and center of mass of Koreans whose ages range from 7 to 49 were investigated. Sixty-five male subjects and sixty-nine female subjects participated. Eight body segments (head with neck, trunk, thigh, shank, foot, upper arm, forearm and hand) were directly measured with a Martin-type anthropometer, and the immersion method was adopted to measure the volume of body segments. After this, densities were computed by the density equatio

A new aspect of the carotid body function controlling hypoxic ventilatory decline in humans.

Ventilatory response to eucapnic sustained mild hypoxia was measured in one patient with unilateral and three patients with bilateral carotid body (CB) resection (defined UR and BR, respectively). The profile of ventilatory response in UR patient was initially augmented then gradually declined (biphasic pattern) as generally seen in normal subjects although the absolute magnitude was substantially low. On the other hand, biphasic pattern was disappeared in all three BRs. Lack of hypoxic ventilatory decline (HVD) in the late period of sustained hypoxia was in marked contrast to that reported in

Cloth color preference under the influences of body heating due to hot bath immersion.

The experiment is aimed at knowing the effect of "body heating" on color preference. Eleven subjects with normal color vision served as subjects. Two tests, one of the "No Bath" and the other of the "Bath" were conducted. Hot bath immersion with 38.5 degrees C was performed for 30 min from 07:30 h to 08:00 h. Then, they were instructed to choose a single colored cloth out of 41 cloth colors (24 x 52 cm), preferred by themselves, every five min from 08:00 h to 09:00 h under the ambient temperature (Ta) of 27 degrees C. Most subjects preferred cooler color after "body heating" than after "not bo

Bone changes due to hyperbaric exposure.

Based on the hypothesis that bone calcification is promoted by loading physical pressure, changes in the microstructure of the bone under hyperbaric conditions were analyzed by imaging technology. Hyperbaric exposure was carried out for two weeks at 2 atm (equal to the pressure at a depth of water of 10 m) which was achieved using a mixed gas of helium and oxygen (He:O2 88%:12%) in which the oxygen partial pressure was maintained at constant (PO2: 0.21 bar). In image technological analysis, the growth and development of the bone were evaluated at different stages using Digital Magnification Ra

Effects of the morning irradiation of light with different wavelengths on the behavior of core temperature and melatonin in humans.

Following the previous studies on the influence of light with different wavelengths on human biological rhythms during nighttime, present experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of morning light on the behavior of the core temperature and melatonin in humans. The experiments were carried out in four subjects with normal color vision. The subjects were exposed between 4:00 h to 9:00 h to red, green and blue light of 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux, and with an incandescent light of 50 lux as control. The main results were as follows: No differences in the behavior of core temperature an

Contribution of peripheral chemoreceptor drive in exercise hyperpnea in humans.

The peripheral chemoreceptors play a dominant role in the respiratory compensation of lactic acidosis during heavy exercise of humans. Our object was to determine the contribution of peripheral chemoreceptors to exercise hyperpnea during mild to moderate and heavy exercise above the anaerobic threshold. We used a hyperoxic suppression test in six normal male subjects. Inspired gas was abruptly changed without the subject's knowledge from air to pure oxygen for 5 to 6 breaths. The maximal ventilatory depression after O2 breathing was 5.5 +/- 1.7 L/min (BTPS) at mild exercise, and the depression
