Early and late cognitive event-related potentials mark stages of HIV-1 infection in the drug-user risk group.

HIV-1 (Human immunodeficiency virus) infection of the brain causes delays in auditory event-related potential (ERP) components. We recorded auditory ERPs from 38 former parenteral drug users (PDUs) at three stages of HIV-1 infection: seronegative; seropositive; stage II; and seropositive, stage IV. There were five response conditions: Go Nogo, Count, Simple Response, Simple Count, and Ignore. P3 peak latencies were significantly delayed and P3 amplitudes were significantly reduced for all seropositives, including asymptomatics, when compared to PDU seronegative controls. In contrast, the P1 an

Evoked potentials in acute transverse myelopathy.

Evoked potential studies were undertaken in nine patients with acute transverse myelopathy three to 25 weeks after onset. The visual evoked potentials (VEP), brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) or somato-sensory evoked potentials (SEP) after median nerve stimulation were normal in all but one with prolonged latency of VEP. The SEP after tibial nerve stimulation was abnormal in six patients--in three, there was no cortical potential from either side (total conduction block); in two, there was a block on one side and a slightly delayed latency on the other; and in one patient there was

Cortical Dynamic Causality Network for Auditory-Motor Tasks.

Motor preparation and execution require the interactions of a large-scale brain network, while the study of the dynamic changes of their interactions could uncover the underlying neural mechanism of the corresponding information processing. This dynamic analysis requires high temporal resolution of the recorded signals. Electroencephalogram (EEG) with high temporal resolution has been widely used in related studies. However, studies based on scalp EEG always lead to distorted results, due to scalp volume conduction, compared with that of cortically recorded signals. In the current study, the d

Reappraising the voices of wrath.

Cognitive reappraisal recruits prefrontal and parietal cortical areas. Because of the near exclusive usage in past research of visual stimuli to elicit emotions, it is unknown whether the same neural substrates underlie the reappraisal of emotions induced through other sensory modalities. Here, participants reappraised their emotions in order to increase or decrease their emotional response to angry prosody, or maintained their attention to it in a control condition. Neural activity was monitored with fMRI, and connectivity was investigated by using psychophysiological interaction analyses. A

[Cortical organization of different languages with different proficiency levels].

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have enhanced differences and similarities in the processing of early and late acquired languages. Anatomic and functional differences have demonstrated how bilingualism exerts executive functions, dependent of the prefrontal cortex in the frontal lobe. AIM: To study the cortical differences, neurophysiologically measured in school-aged children, in the processing of known and unknown languages. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We have measured the recognition processes of words in several languages, specifically Spanish, English, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese, as well a

Critical period for acoustic preference in mice.

Preference behaviors are often established during early life, but the underlying neural circuit mechanisms remain unknown. Adapting a unique nesting behavior assay, we confirmed a "critical period" for developing music preference in C57BL/6 mice. Early music exposure between postnatal days 15 and 24 reversed their innate bias for silent shelter, which typically could not be altered in adulthood. Instead, exposing adult mice treated acutely with valproic acid or carrying a targeted deletion of the Nogo receptor (NgR(-/-)) unmasked a strong plasticity of preference consistent with a reopening of

Cortical cognitive potentials in elderly persons.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in the acoustically evoked cortical cognitive potentials N 200, P 300, and N 3 with age. There were 232 participants, who were 60 years or older, and each was examined using a battery of audiological tests including a questionnaire, otomicroscopy, pure-tone audiometry, and cortical cognitive potentials, measured at Fz using an auditory oddball paradigm. N 200 was elicited in 46.9%, P 300 in 45.1%, and N 3 in 52.2% of the elderly participants. The most significant predictors for presence of cortical responses were the participant's age and he

Granger sensori-behavioral functional taxonomy of neuronal ensemble activity from two-photon calcium imaging data.

Understanding how neuronal populations interact to encode and transform sensory information is a fundamental challenge in computational neuroscience. Most existing studies, however, study neural encoding, behavioral readout, and functional connectivity as disjoint problems. Two-photon calcium imaging enables simultaneous recording of large neuronal ensembles in vivo, driven by diverse stimuli and eliciting distinct behaviors. However, extracting directional functional connectivity metrics as well as encoding and readout properties of neurons from such data remains difficult due to indirect and

Entorhinal cortex tau, amyloid-β, cortical thickness and memory performance in non-demented subjects.

As more biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease and age-related brain conditions become available, more sophisticated analytic approaches are needed to take full advantage of the information they convey. Most work has been done using categorical approaches but the joint relationships of tau PET, amyloid PET and cortical thickness in their continuous distributions to cognition have been under-explored. We evaluated non-demented subjects over age 50 years in the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, 2037 of whom had undergone 3 T MRI scan, 985 amyloid PET scan with 11C-Pittsburgh compound B (PIB) and MRI, and

Neural correlates of conflict between gestures and words: A domain-specific role for a temporal-parietal complex.

The interpretation of social cues is a fundamental function of human social behavior, and resolution of inconsistencies between spoken and gestural cues plays an important role in successful interactions. To gain insight into these underlying neural processes, we compared neural responses in a traditional color/word conflict task and to a gesture/word conflict task to test hypotheses of domain-general and domain-specific conflict resolution. In the gesture task, recorded spoken words ("yes" and "no") were presented simultaneously with video recordings of actors performing one of the following

Large-scale changes in network interactions as a physiological signature of spatial neglect.

The relationship between spontaneous brain activity and behaviour following focal injury is not well understood. Here, we report a large-scale study of resting state functional connectivity MRI and spatial neglect following stroke in a large (n=84) heterogeneous sample of first-ever stroke patients (within 1-2 weeks). Spatial neglect, which is typically more severe after right than left hemisphere injury, includes deficits of spatial attention and motor actions contralateral to the lesion, and low general attention due to impaired vigilance/arousal. Patients underwent structural and resting st

Quantitative light microscopic autoradiographic localization of cholinergic muscarinic receptors in the human brain: brainstem.

We have investigated the localization of muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the brainstem of eight patients free of neurological disease following quantitative autoradiography of microtome sections of postmortem tissue labeled in vitro with N-[3H]methyl scopolamine as a ligand. Receptor densities were quantified by microdensitometry with the aid of a computer assisted image analysis system. Our results reveal a heterogeneous distribution of receptor sites. High concentrations of muscarinic cholinergic receptor sites were associated with many nuclei and areas of the brainstem including the nuc

Visuospatial cognition in people with Parkinson's disease: a pilot study assessing a block span task using fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Impaired visuospatial working memory (WM) often negatively impacts the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD). The Block Span Task (BST) is a novel Corsi-Block-like task adapted for use in functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to understand the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying visuospatial impairment in PD. This pilot study examines whether the BST is a practical tool to provide an in-scanner visuospatial WM task for older adults with mild-moderate PD. METHODS: We recruited and assessed 21 older adults with mild-moderate PD (F = 9, M = 12,

Hyperactivity/restlessness is associated with increased functional connectivity in adults with ADHD: a dimensional analysis of resting state fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a serious and frequent psychiatric disorder of multifactorial pathogenesis. Several lines of evidence support the idea that ADHD is, in its core, a disorder of dysfunctional brain connectivity within and between several neurofunctional networks. The primary aim of this study was to investigate associations between the functional connectivity within resting state brain networks and the individual severity of core ADHD symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity). METHODS: Resting state functional magnetic resonance
