Analysis and Classification of Voice Pathologies Using Glottal Signal Parameters.

The classification of voice diseases has many applications in health, in diseases treatment, and in the design of new medical equipment for helping doctors in diagnosing pathologies related to the voice. This work uses the parameters of the glottal signal to help the identification of two types of voice disorders related to the pathologies of the vocal folds: nodule and unilateral paralysis. The parameters of the glottal signal are obtained through a known inverse filtering method, and they are used as inputs to an Artificial Neural Network, a Support Vector Machine, and also to a Hidden Marko

Formant frequency estimation of high-pitched vowels using weighted linear prediction.

All-pole modeling is a widely used formant estimation method, but its performance is known to deteriorate for high-pitched voices. In order to address this problem, several all-pole modeling methods robust to fundamental frequency have been proposed. This study compares five such previously known methods and introduces a technique, Weighted Linear Prediction with Attenuated Main Excitation (WLP-AME). WLP-AME utilizes temporally weighted linear prediction (LP) in which the square of the prediction error is multiplied by a given parametric weighting function. The weighting downgrades the contrib

A novel scoring system to distinguish vocal cord dysfunction from asthma.

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord dysfunction is often misdiagnosed and mistreated as asthma, which can lead to increased and unnecessary medication use and increased health care utilization. OBJECTIVE: To develop a valid scoring index that could help distinguish vocal cord dysfunction from asthma. METHODS: We compared the demographics, comorbidities, clinical symptoms, and symptom triggers of subjects with vocal cord dysfunction (n = 89) and those with asthma (n = 59). By using multivariable logistic regression, we identified distinguishing features associated with vocal cord dysfunction, which were w

Automatic Speech Recognition and Acoustic Analysis for Dysarthria Assessment in Telerehabilitation: User-Centered Design and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a frequent motor speech disorder following a stroke, affecting up to 42% of survivors and resulting in reduced speech intelligibility and diminished quality of life. Clinical assessments, such as the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment, Second Edition (FDA-2), rely heavily on the subjective judgment of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which limits comparability and scalability. Telepractice solutions have the potential to extend access to care, but validated digital tools that combine automatic analysis with clinically usable interfaces remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: This

Dynamic Assessment of Fine Motor Control and Vocalization in Parkinson Disease Through a Smartphone App: Cross-Sectional Study of Time-Severity Interaction Effects.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and nonmotor symptoms that worsen over time, significantly impacting quality of life. While clinical evaluations such as the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) are standard for assessing disease severity, they offer somewhat limited temporal resolution and are susceptible to observer variability. Smartphone apps present a viable method for capturing detailed fluctuations in motor and vocal functions in real-world settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use a smartphone-based ap

Development of a Child Articulation Screening Test Within Digital Therapeutics: Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders are common in children and are associated with an increased risk of academic reading difficulties. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the need for remote and digitalized assessment tools. In South Korea, standardized instruments such as the Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonation and Assessment of Phonology and Articulation for children are widely used but have limitations, including reliance on face-to-face evaluation, and the absence of automated scoring. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and establish the content validity of an articulation

Detection of Neurogenic Voice Disorders Using the Fisher Vector Representation of Cepstral Features.

Neurogenic voice disorders (NVDs) are caused by damage or malfunction of the central or peripheral nervous system that controls vocal fold movement. In this paper, we investigate the potential of the Fisher vector (FV) encoding in automatic detection of people with NVDs. FVs are used to convert features from frame level (local descriptors) to utterance level (global descriptors). At the frame level, we extract two popular cepstral representations, namely, Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and perceptual linear prediction cepstral coefficients (PLPCCs), from acoustic voice signals. In

The Potential Role of Subglottal Convergence Angle and Measurement.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore subglottal convergence angle measurement. We hypothesize that the angle will change with glottis closure condition. Changes to the angle may alter vocal fold stress distribution, which could result in vocal fold pathologies. METHODS: Three vocal fold positions were evaluated by the degree of glottal closure and divided into three groups. Neck computed tomographic images of the subjects were gathered, and three-dimensional (3D) models of the vocal folds and the airway were reconstructed using Mimics software, through which the subglottal convergence angle
