The Impact of Carotid Artery Stenting on Cerebral Perfusion, Functional Connectivity, and Cognition in Severe Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis Patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis can lead to not only stroke but also cognition impairment. Although it has been proven that carotid artery stenting (CAS) can reduce the risk of future strokes, the effect of CAS on cognition is conflicting. In recent years, pulsed arterial spin labeling (pASL) MRI and resting-state functional MRI (R-fMRI) have been employed in cognitive impairment studies. For the present study, cognition is evaluated in severe asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis patients undergoing CAS, and the mechanisms underlying the cognitive change are explor

Becoming a better parent: Mice learn sounds that improve a stereotyped maternal behavior.

While mothering is often instinctive and stereotyped in species-specific ways, evolution can favor genetically "open" behavior programs that allow experience to shape infant care. Among experience-dependent maternal behavioral mechanisms, sensory learning about infants has been hard to separate from motivational changes arising from sensitization with infants. We developed a paradigm in which sensory learning of an infant-associated cue improves a stereotypical maternal behavior in female mice. Mice instinctively employed a spatial memory-based strategy when engaged repetitively in a pup searc

The jaundiced gunn rat model of auditory neuropathy/dyssynchrony.

OBJECTIVE: High levels of bilirubin are neurotoxic and may result in deafness or auditory neuropathy/auditory dyssynchrony (AN/AD). The jaundiced (jj) Gunn rat animal model of kernicterus has electrophysiologic and neuroanatomic abnormalities of brainstem auditory nuclei with normal cochlear microphonic recordings. We examined morphologic changes in the cochlea, spiral ganglion, and auditory nerve and relate these findings to current understanding of AN/AD. METHODS: At 15 days of age, jj and nonjaundiced (Nj) littermates were injected with sulfadimethoxine (sulfa) and killed 3 days later by t

Understanding the pathology of vascular cognitive impairment.

The prevalence, morphology and pathogenesis of vascular dementia (VaD), recently termed vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), and of mixed dementia (Alzheimer disease+vascular encephalopathy) are a matter of discussion and no validated neuropathologic criteria for these disorders are currently available. In Western memory clinic-based series, VaD/CVI is suggested in 8-10% of cognitively impaired elderly; its prevalence in autopsy series ranges from 0.03% to 58% (mean 5-15%). Fairly unusual as an isolated nosological entity, CVI appears to correlate with focal, multifocal or diffuse cortical and

Multimodality evoked potentials in aortoarteritis.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have been used to detect early and even asymptomatic brain ischemia. There is a need to detect subclinical brain and/or spinal cord ischemia in patients with aortoarteritis so that ischemic deficits can be prevented by early intervention. We studied multimodality (Visual evoked potentials--VEPs, Somatosensory evoked potentials--SEPs and BAEPs) evoked potentials (EPs) in 10 neurologically asymptomatic subjects with aortoarteritis. EP latencies were normal in all the patients studied. The possible value of EP latencies in detection of early brain and/

Neurobiological Correlates in Internet Gaming Disorder: A Systematic Literature Review.

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a potential mental disorder currently included in the third section of the latest (fifth) edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a condition that requires additional research to be included in the main manual. Although research efforts in the area have increased, there is a continuing debate about the respective criteria to use as well as the status of the condition as mental health concern. Rather than using diagnostic criteria which are based on subjective symptom experience, the National Institute of Mental Health a

Changing Artificial Playback Speed and Real Movement Velocity Do Not Differentially Influence the Excitability of Primary Motor Cortex during Observation of a Repetitive Finger Movement.

Action observation studies have investigated whether changing the speed of the observed movement affects the action observation network. There are two types of speed-changing conditions; one involves "changes in actual movement velocity," and the other is "manipulation of video speed." Previous studies have investigated the effects of these conditions separately, but to date, no study has directly investigated the differences between the effects of these conditions. In the "movement velocity condition," increased velocity is associated with increased muscle activity; however, this change of mu

Distinct Actions of Voltage-Activated Ca2+ Channel Block on Spontaneous Release at Excitatory and Inhibitory Central Synapses.

At chemical synapses, voltage-activated calcium channels (VACCs) mediate Ca2+ influx to trigger action potential-evoked neurotransmitter release. However, the mechanisms by which Ca2+ regulates spontaneous transmission have not been fully determined. We have shown that VACCs are a major trigger of spontaneous release at neocortical inhibitory synapses but not at excitatory synapses, suggesting fundamental differences in spontaneous neurotransmission at GABAergic and glutamatergic synapses. Recently, VACC blockers were reported to reduce spontaneous release of glutamate and it was proposed that

Aberrant development of post-movement beta rebound in adolescents and young adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Dependent on maternal (e.g. genetic, age) and exposure (frequency, quantity, and timing) variables, the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing fetus are known to vary widely, producing a broad range of morphological anomalies and neurocognitive deficits in offspring, referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Maternal drinking during pregnancy remains a leading risk factor for the development of intellectual disabilities in the US. While few functional findings exist today that shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the observed impairments in individuals wit

Knockdown of the candidate dyslexia susceptibility gene homolog dyx1c1 in rodents: effects on auditory processing, visual attention, and cortical and thalamic anatomy.

The current study investigated the behavioral and neuroanatomical effects of embryonic knockdown of the candidate dyslexia susceptibility gene (CDSG) homolog Dyx1c1 through RNA interference (RNAi) in rats. Specifically, we examined long-term effects on visual attention abilities in male rats, in addition to assessing rapid and complex auditory processing abilities in male and, for the first time, female rats. Our results replicated prior evidence of complex acoustic processing deficits in Dyx1c1 male rats and revealed new evidence of comparable deficits in Dyx1c1 female rats. Moreover, we foun

Abnormal evoked potentials of Kearns-Sayre syndrome.

We examined eight patients with Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) to investigate a dysfunction in the central nervous system (CNS) using PTN-SEP, MN-SEP and BAEP. We found a significant increase in the P37 latency of PTN-SEPs and the central conduction time of MN-SEPs, and interpeak latencies of BAEPs. Delayed SEPs or BAEPs were caused by a dysfunction of the somatosensory or lateral lemniscus pathways which could be related to mitochondrial abnormalities in the CNS. Long-term therapy with CoQ showed an improvement of the latencies of SEPs after about half a year from the start of CoQ therapy in our

[Multimodality evoked potentials and brain death. Prerequisites, findings and problems].

According to the recommendations of the medical board of the FRG the clinical diagnosis of cerebral death in adults requires an observation period of 12 hours. Evoked cerebral potentials have been accepted as a technical method of confirmation of clinical signs. In 32 patients with the signs of apneic brain-stem areflexia acoustic evoked brain-stem potentials and median-evoked somatosensory potentials were recorded. In supratentorial lesions evoked potentials are adequate to confirm complete cessation of brain function. In three cases of primary brain-stem disease evoked potentials were abolis

Ototoxicity-related changes in GABA immunolabeling within the rat inferior colliculus.

Several studies suggest that hearing loss results in changes in the balance between inhibition and excitation in the inferior colliculus (IC). The IC is an integral nucleus within the auditory brainstem. The majority of ascending pathways from the lateral lemniscus (LL), superior olivary complex (SOC), and cochlear nucleus (CN) synapse in the IC before projecting to the thalamus and cortex. Many of these ascending projections provide inhibitory innervation to neurons within the IC. However, the nature and the distribution of this inhibitory input have only been partially elucidated in the rat.

Transcranial electric and acoustic stimulation for tinnitus: study protocol for a randomized double-blind controlled trial assessing the influence of combined transcranial random noise and acoustic stimulation on tinnitus loudness and distress.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the result of aberrant neuronal activity. As a novel treatment form, neuromodulation is used to modify neuronal activity of brain areas involved in tinnitus generation. Among the different forms of electric stimulation, transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) has been shown to be a promising treatment option for tinnitus. In addition, recent studies indicate that the reduction in tinnitus can be more pronounced when different modalities of stimulation techniques are combined ("bimodal stimulation"). TRNS can be used in combination with acoustic stimulation (AS), a

Sequential dual-site High-Definition transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS) treatment in chronic subjective tinnitus: study protocol of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic tinnitus is a highly prevalent symptom, with many patients reporting considerable effects of tinnitus on quality of life. No clear evidence-based treatment options are currently available. While counseling-based methods are valuable in some cases, they are not sufficiently effective for all tinnitus patients. Neuromodulation techniques such as high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) are proposed to have positive effects on tinnitus severity but, to date, these effects have not been proven conclusively.
